    I have a Native Chief, and people need to give the Spyderco back lock a chance. It is fundamentally the same mechanism as that on the Buck knives, but modernized and made to be a true one handed open/close knife (ie. when closing it, put your right index finger in the path of the jimped finger choil, flick or let the blade fall so that the choil hits your index finger, then rotate and close it after moving your fingers out of the way).

    I call it the "Native Chef" and I love it. For people who are afraid that lockback knives arent able to be flicked open, disregard that with longer bladed spyderco lockbacks.

    I bought a standard Native Chief last year (08/13/2022) just because I really like how it looks.. I never thought I'd ever fall in love with a backlock but I find myself really enamored with my Native Chief. Sure, it's a very big knife but It's so easy to carry. Slicing is second to none. The tip is very pointy so piercing is a breeze. Ergonomics are excellent. I've got three Native 5s and I totally with the TheApostleP. The Native Chief is just a better knife than the Native 5 and when you know how good a Native 5 is, that tells you how great the Native Chief is. I love fidgeting with my knives but I also really enjoy just rolling open my Natives.

    You do a great job with your reviews. You actually actually use and carry each knife before you do them. That is appreciated. The Native Chief is a great model I just found it a little large when you work around non knife people. Thanks again!

      Thanks man. I recently got a new job a couple of weeks ago so I haven’t carried this one yet because people will think I’m crazy. Everybody knew I liked knives in my old job so they didn’t really care, I remember carrying the military a lot😂

    Don’t pry with a knife and you don’t have to worry about the tip.

    I absolutely love my chief. I've had mine a couple years now and it flicks open good. If there's 2 things about it I would change it is this: A thicker pin on the lockbar and the other is I'd have the locking bar engage just a tad deeper. It only engages about 2mm-2.5mm deep. Probably stronger and longer wearing than it'll ever need to be anyways., but I'd still change that if I could. .
    BTW, Spyderco, IF you are listening, I would love a chief in a ball bearing lock version.

    Have an S90v Native 5 LW. Teal one. Saw a youtuber test their example at 62 HRC so I can only hope mine is there! That's on the high end of the bell curve for Spyderco.

    I got one a couple months ago. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Especially about chamfering the scales. I do like carrying it, though.

      Yeah chamfering would be a nice touch. It would make it feel less blocky. Thanks for watching

    I have the regular S30V. Other than I often like to carry small knives I won't feel in my pocket (Benchmade Mini Coalition, ZT 0230, Native 5 LW, Opinel no7...), I could own just this one and be extremely happy. I like it more than the Pm2, Pm3, Stretch 2 zdp, Endura and Dragonfly which I also own. Note that I like to use knives for cooking and that makes the chief an easy winner, with the Endura coming second. I have also stabbed a wooden wall very hard and repeatedly with it (was losing my marbles one night) and the tip didn't budge, blade still dead-centered. The balance is also such that I assume it may not be as good with the CF version.

    Seems like compression locks are a bit thicker as well.

    I do like the knife but it does kinda bug me about a couple of those things, the lost cutting edge to the coil and also for the price that the scales couldn't be chamfered a bit more.

    the pin with which the backlock is attached looks a bit small. and this pin is located on the G10 liners without reinforcement. nevertheless I bought this knife.

    A local place near me has an s30v carbon fiber version for $250. Its a beautiful knife and i would love to own one but its almost too big for edc, almost.

      It a big boy but it doesn’t carry like one. It’s slim and lightweight for its size and that why I’ve carried it more than I thought I would. Thanks for watching

    I have the Rex 45 as my workshop knife as the flat-ish pointy blade is great for that kind of use. But the finger choil on a knife this large is not super practical. It appears that the main reason for it is that the knife does not sever your index finger when you push the lock bar all the way down (not easy, one has to use the tip of the finger nail) when lets the blade fall freely. F&F is excellent as is the lockup. I would love a version that would be a little smaller with litte more meat on the handle - especially towards the butt. If you look at the knife in closed position - it will not take much (maybe 2 mm of blade height - OK, that is MANY sharpenings, probably even a regrind to thin the knife) until the tip will start to come outside the handle - and that can't be fixed unless one makes custom handle scales. I am sometimes wondering whether I should replace it with k390 Endela or Endura (I would consider k390 PM2, but it is impossible to find)

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a challenge with back locks that drop shut when closing. I also would like to see one with the blade length maxed out, especially for how light this knife is.
      I’ve never noticed the tip being close to the top of the scale, but I can see that being a problem in the future. Thanks for watching👊

    • @turing2376
      @turing2376 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That did eventually happen to my endura. Ground the back of the tip to a reverse tanto and that took care of it.

    🤔 hmmmm maybe it’s because their lower priced knifes are so good too.

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could be the price point on it, but I think that it is people who don’t think it is fun to play with so they throw it out of consideration. I have noticed people who like spydercos similar to this price range not liking the knife, so that’s why I brought it up. Thanks fo watching
