Its had the tailgate and most of the interior from a higher spec V6 Sterling fastback - a previous keeper had just salvaged the 820i badges from the original and plonked the above the Sterling one. Makes me feel old to think that even the earliest of these facelift 800s are now approaching 33 years old now.
Once again a great find and hugely entertaining rescue! 👍👍

    • @procta2343
      @procta2343 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

yeah i was thinking that's had an interior from the higher spec, and boot lid. I am suspecting that those popped up at a decent price for the owner at the time, shame they never got the wheels though. If that had been me doing that, id have gone the full smash, and had rear doors been electric too, rather than the manual. I bet these are getting tricky for bits now, as most yards wont keep cars in this age, plus many of these were binned off well before their time, when rover went bust. The bottom of old rovers just dropped out. So dealer were just Weighing these in left right and centre, some of the turbo ones were getting their engines pulled for the Rover 200.

Amazing drive fully loaded 3 kids sat all day at 120 by far the most comfortable car I've ever driven .
Even after 8 hrs in the seat . Light steering and and very positive on the road . Effortless.

Used to have an 820Si in storm grey. It was a very civilised way to travel. One thing to mention. The 2 litre T series didn't suffer from the head gasket issues (kinda). The only thing you generally get with them is a small weep of oil from the front of the engine on the passenger side. This is due to the block which is identical to that in a 2 litre O series fitted to a Maestro or Montego.

    • @christersundin773

That 'small weep' was just that and nothing of concern. "They all do that sir......". My M16 certainly did and lasted over 120,000 miles before regular PCV cleans were required due to blow-by. I don't know if the T series was any better than the M16, but that stupid grille on the front of the bonnet 'uglified' a once handsome car.

I always hankered for a 800 Fastback, and you are right, that car had a lot more to give, even at 110,000+ miles. Do the 600, the mid to late 90s Rovers were superb. I had a 620Si, and later got the fire-breathing 623GSi, and she was a quick sort and a sublime drive, they were both autos but the quality, the interior, and the 623 had full leather, it was an epic place to be. Honestly, well done, I loved every minute. If you fancy the King of the Rovers - do a P6, the engineering quality will blow you away (the rust might not) but they are big on Rover DNA. KBO, my friend. Love this channel.

If the alternator is not charging might be worth an exercise to look at it first before replacing it. If the bearings are ok and windings complete then usually it is just the diode pack. A new alternator can be £100 or more but a diode pack is around £20. A bit more hassle but might be useful footage for a TH-cam as well as saving costs. (Actually quite easy to change out a diode pack) 😊

    • @richardhemingway6084

Apart from electrical issues a major issue arose as councils started installing speed bumps everywhere - The 820's didn't like them seeing the bottom ball joints poping out of the cup in the lower arm , not pretty .
Peugeot 405's used a similar ball joint ( screwed in instead of push in and circlip ) and had a similar issue when after market ones were fitted and the threads were wrong , whole thing came out .
Then not long after - the new Cavaliers were recalled after their lower arms were snapping off where the ball joints were rivetted on seeing a lot of new car's wrote off . Cure was to grind off the rivets and replace the ball joint with a bolt on one .
Sort of a 90's thing that kept me busy ...
Now we have the crappy aluminium arms and linkages that just snap off iff you try driving up a kerb lol ....
An old " get it through the MOT " thing was to remove the dash and cut the circuit board track going to the ABS warning light and solder in a jumper wire from the alternator charge light so the ABS came on and went off as the engine started .Rovers / Montego's / Maestro's , so worth taking a look behind the dash just incase .

Another great video Ben and another classic saved for the road! :). I love the 2nd gen 800! I was lucky enough to be able to waft around in a (then) 5 year old 1997P 825 KV6 Sterling when I was 22 as it was cheaper to insure than my 1995 Vauxhall Vectra B 1.8GLS! I still say that that was one of the finest sounding V6s!
These T-16 engines are good solid lumps - seen use in the R8 200/400s and the 600s as well as these. Best known in 197bhp turbo form in the R8 Tomcat coupes. Other than a wee oil seep from the block it's normally solid (though the turbo ones have been known to blow the big ends on occasion). The temp gauge issue may be a faulty thermostat - I encountered a similar issue with a Mondeo 3 where the gauge would vary depending on the undulation of the road and I was worried about HGF trouble or that and it was just one of the thermostats had failed.

Great car and awesome video. Thank you for sharing this experience. I honestly don’t know what it is about our love for Rovers, I wonder if it’s because we all love an underdog and let’s face it, Rovers was the underdog of the British motor industry. I have a 2004 1.4 Rover 25 which was a hand me down from my late grandparents. I hated it at first, I was embarrassed to drive it, but as time went on and I got a few more miles out of it and started working on it, I have become quite attached to it. Rover did make some great cars that do stand the rest of time (with a bit of love and care)

Great video again. I agree on the car comfort from the 90s. I’ve got a P reg Citroen ZX and the seats are like armchairs whereas my 2020 Skoda has seats like blocks of concrete. I had a ‘94 Escort as well and the seats were super comfy.

Another great vid. Nice to see a youtuber actually put the effort into the restoration/running effort of a classic, although i think the welding leaves a bit to be desired! Another plus is the fact that you are not one of those that gets a free/cheap classic and changes a battery and/or gives a wash and suddenly they think car is now worth 10k! Hopefully she will go to a good home, to someone that will cherish her.

🎉I'm amazed you say how lively it was , my 820se had the same engine as yours but the full boot not the hatch. It didn't have a speedo, it was fitted with a calendar........it was so slow . It finally did what all those engines did and developed a sticky valve and went lumpy so I got rid . But I have to say it was a very comfy car and ride. Later i had a 623gsi in firenze red , cream leather auto ......wow what a motor that was beautiful to drive till i finally swapped it .

Confession: I nodded when you asked if the brake lights work! I am really enjoying the channel.. Great combo of cars from our youth and cheerfulness. That interior was put in by someone who was from the 'ah, fuck it' school of motor engineering and car restoration.

Great video Ben, I am myself a Rover fan at heart, and seeing this really took me back to my youth of my Dad having Rover company cars, especially remember the 200 Gti's and coupe's...very underrated cars. Keep the videos coming, loving the channel and content. The mould thing on Rovers/Austin's why is that??? just for info the T series was 136 the M series was 140 😁

Top work again Ben, very underrated cars & glad this one will live on. Presumably the Sterling interior was from a saloon & that’s why the back rest wasn’t swapped!
