Owl are not the best fighters, especialy on the ground, they hunt by dropping on their prey with speed, mostly using their ability to see thru the dark, and the fact that their feathers glide thru the air with absolute silence (so it's more like stealth assassination, and not fighting), plus, like all birds, they are really fragile, so fighting to death in a box with a pigeon isn't really what they are looking for.
One of the young was appearantly trampled to death. At 3:43 owl mom stepped on it's head and it didn't get up afterwards. You see some leg movement and after some more kicks it ceases to move at all. So fighting more aggressively would have most likely caused all of her offsprings to die.

Male didn't seem scared, just confused. Male owl instincts are probably tilted more towards providing food. Notice how he returns multiple times with larger prey. While I'd bet that Female owl instincts in comparison have stronger proclivities towards protecting the nest. Consider that if the offspring die, it will be very difficult for the female to endure pregnancy again. It's a large investment for the female.
When the pigeon first went into the nest and laid the egg it was daytime, it could definitely see it was occupied. The night fight it probably couldn’t see as much though.
