  • This videos are meant to document the lives of wild barn owl and other birds in order that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene. All the videos are documenting wild animals. He the wild barn owls predated pigeons. Predation is a common occurrence in nature.
    All the birds in this video are WILD and can enter and leave as they please.
    On June 29, 2021 a pigeon entered a barn owl nest box that had 4 nestling that is streamed live in our TH-cam channel (Charter Group Birdcams ציפורים אונליין קבוצת צ'רטר). A this time the barn owl parents roost outside the nest box during the day and returned only at night to feed the young. Here the barn owl parents left their nestlings a lone to defend themselves from the pigeon pair that wanted the nest for themselves. This is second time we documented a pigeon laying eggs inside an active barn owl nest boxes with barn owls nestlings.
    All the birds in this video are WILD and can enter and leave as they please.
    We set security cameras in bird nests that we stream live in our TH-cam channel “Charter Group Birdcams” in order to observe the birds in nature but not to interfere or intervene.

      This one has a coushioned inside that protects against weather and being seen, and a tall place to lay outside perfect for birds to stay above enemies and survey the area before beginning fligth
      But it seems to be out in the open and not very hard to find

    This is a weird saga. I can't tell if it is the owls who suck at hunting, the pigeons being MMA fighters, or if the owls are playing 4d chess. I mean, maybe the owls were "farming" the pigeons, letting them breed and live so they could be a rainy/cold day food supply.

      Barn owls are probably not used to killing pigeon. Their diet consists mostly of rodents and barely any birds. I reckon that’s why pigeons didn’t recognize them as threat as well.

    • @Killgore-ip2yq
      @Killgore-ip2yq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      The way I see it, the owl was intentionally killing those who were near the nest as a warning. Their are multiple times he attacks a pigeon and doesn't do anything. Your right it might be not used to eating pigeons but it doesn't have a problem with it either.
      I want to believe it was a conscious effort by the owl to kill or attack those pigeons.

    • @joshm3484
      @joshm3484 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Keep in mind that the owl probably couldn't see very well inside the box, but the pigeons were likely completely blind. Owls definitely have the advantage, especially at night, but outside they'd have at least moonlight and starlight to hunt by. In the nest box even they would have problems seeing very well.

    If you notice, the pigeons use their very strong wing beat as a defensive weapon, flicking them towards their predators, but you'll only see this within confined spaces, like these nesting boxes, although the owl knows this and keeps away from the pigeons cracking wing beats, then by using it's long legs, it's subdues then kills the pigeons with the characteristic snip of the neck vertebrae.

    • @theotheseaeagle
      @theotheseaeagle 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The pigeons were panicking, they could not see the owl very well so then flailing about was just them trying hastily to find an exit in the darkness. If they were using their wings to attack the owl it would be a lot more head on beating their wings forwards and in a head on position. They also lost lots of feathers because one of a pigeons defence mechanisms is to loosen its feathers so if a predator grabs them it just ends up grabbing a big clump of feathers and they can make their escape

    It’s sad reading the comments just shows how the Pigeon is such an underestimated bird. People who don’t have an interest in wildlife or birds tend to think of pigeons as stupid or dirty. Pigeons are one of the most intelligent bird species, they’re monogamous (meaning they mate with one mate for life) and they helped humans in so many wars. Sounds like a pretty great bird to me.

    • @euthymialy
      @euthymialy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Catenfur I think many bird species look at an occupied nest box or a hotly contested one as a very good nest site, they seem to fight over the “best” spots and have the instinctual stubbornness to keep trying to nest in the ideal place even while having to fight off other contenders.

    • @cvdinjapan7935
      @cvdinjapan7935 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Deadassbruhfrfr Owls don't even build their own nests. They take nests that others have built. (It's a common behavior for many birds. Why build a nest when you can take one that's just sitting there?) On the contrary, young eagle couples will sometimes build "practice nests" just for experience when it's not mating season. (These nests are usually then taken by an owl.) Owls also regularly sucker-punch eagles at night... not to eat the eagles or anything. They just want to mess with them at night (because an eagle would rip them apart during the day). Owls steal nests and hit others just for fun or out of self defense... So if you want to call a pigeon a thug, you should also call an owl a thug.

    • @cvdinjapan7935
      @cvdinjapan7935 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Catenfur The pigeons may have used that nest before the owls nested there, and thought of it as their home. Their homing instinct told them that was the place they should be, so they felt compelled to nest there. Instinct can sometimes be irrational, but instinct operates outside of logic. It can't be controlled.
