Kings of Tone examines twelve masters of tone revealing their gear and effects formulas (and how you can emulate same with your own gear) along with their singular approaches to "touch" and stylistic phrasing.
While our quest is ultimately about finding our own "voice" and signature sound, we must first study the masters, just as they studied those who came before them. Kings of Tone dissects the styles, touch, tones, amps, pedals, guitars and setups of Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Dickey Betts, Duane Allman, The Edge, Angus Young, David Gilmour, Keith Richards and Mark Knophler.
Your Professor of Tone is NYC session player and educator Jeff McErlain, whose standing-room-only workshops on the subject testify to his expertise stemming from years of tone exploration. "I hope to demystify the tonal qualities of these twelve players by sharing the insight I've gained over many years studying them and deconstructing their styles, touch and rigs."
Been studying his tone for years, and I must say, for a practical real world set-up and clear direction you really nailed the basics well.

I agree with Dan. Having watched many vids online, you really nail the compressor trick David uses.
Compressors do not increase the volume as it gets quieter. They have two parts to them: They reduce the volume of signals that go over a set threshold (e.g. -10db) and a gain boost. In other words, compressors reduce the overall dynamic range of your instrument and boost the signal, which makes your louder sounds quieter and your quieter sounds louder.
Jeff....your run through was a joy to listen to.....you've nailed some iconic tones at OUR prices.....thanks....👍
as a drummer i dig this...respect mucho for the guitar player and his toys!
This is the clearest demonstration and probably the leanest. Few moving parts with your approach. Thank you.
I’ve been chasing Gilmour’s tone for about two years now. It resulted in me building my own pedalboard, loosely based on his “Pulse” rig, but on a tight budget. The Electric Mistress Deluxe is a great flanger, and a must for the tones off of “The Wall”. EHX makes a few current variations, but none are as good as the big box. There is thankfully a small, and cheap, solution: the Mooer E Lady. It’s a micro sized pedal, and it absolutely nails the old Mistress tones. It’s also inexpensive (well under $100; I got mine for $40).
Thanks Guys! Glad you like it. The Flanger is an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress.
LOVED THIS. way better than ANY gear video talking about gilmour
I read an interview with Gilmour in the 80's and he said that he gets his sustain out of sheer volume - he turns the amp up almost to where it starts to feed back. He didn't mention any of his pedals, but he made it a point to mention the loudness.
Ya i remember reading the same thing lately. Control came from alot of muting to stop feed back.
He uses old Hiwatts which are insanely loud amps with a ton of headroom. But he doesn’t normally push his amps into overdrive. He runs his amps very clean though and gets his drive from pedals
If only every lesson/review on youtube was done this well....... Killer job my friend. Thanks so much.
DUDE ...GREAT VIDEO... ONE SUGGESTION TO REDUCE YOUR HUM... USE A BOSS NOISE SUPPRESSOR(AROUND $100.00) IN THE CIRCUIT, THEN YOU CAN SPLIT YOUR OVERDRIVE CIRCUIT WHICH IS NOISY AND LEAVE THE CLEAN CIRCUIT ALONE... GOOD PLAYING AND GOOD FEEL
Great job!! Really! This the type of video that guitarists need. Well paced, articulate and effective.
Thank you!
That delay pedal is a treat. I use a Boss DD5 along with a Digitech 2000...old gear I know..creaking a bit. I suppose you get to know what you have and get what you think is the best out of it and become a bit blinkered. Phase,flange,chorus,vibe....they create an atmosphere, a warp. Compression and Gate can really have an effect on a players' style if used properly. Sometimes a guitar is just a guitar...
Own a BK, had a OCD v4, at low gain settings it was just spot on beautiful sustain and cleanish boost.
Harder levels make the OCD more driven and the Butler more fuzzed out.
Glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks!
Love this, thanks for taking the time to upload.
Hi,
Thanks for the great rundown on an affordable set up. If you fully shield your guitar with double conductive copper and earth to the sheilding from the trem claw and volume pot casing and hold your guitar perpendicular to the floor you will drastically reduce single coil hum to barely noticeable. Cheers.
Thanks, I honestly knew nothing about compressors so I've been doing research, but want as many opinions as possible!
Great Video! Now I truly understand what "Tone is in your fingers" really means. You could get a pretty good sound with just a dry tone, but the effects just make it that much more "Gimour".
I just want to agree with the top comment made by iammrguitar, this is by far the best video for those looking for "the Gilmour" sound. I know I can never hope to play like him but I can sound great being crap
Superb Video.. I landed here researching the tc delay... Now i'm definitely getting one... PLUS.. all the other pedals you demo'd... Thank you for sharing.. the best gear demo I have seen on youtube to date !!..
Excellent video, you nailed the Gilmour tone alright!
not really
Nicely done demonstration. Gilmour is one of my all time favorites. For those looking to save some cash, Joyo makes a great sounding pedal that is as close to the OCD as it gets called the Ultimate Drive, and its $40 brand new.
I'm impressed with the sound of the Electric Mistress
I been using a Boss compressor/ substainer for 'bout 10 yrs. now. Works great with out any problems. Gigging that's saying a lot.....
Best pedal video I have seen... thanks
I'am watching this video over and over again. Very useful and nice done! Thx!!))
Great vid. Love the overall tones. You could add a Fuzz Face for pre 75 sounds and a Big Muff for post.
Just nit-picking here, but a compressor doesn't actually BOOST the quieter parts of a note. What it does is LOWER the peaks of a note, effectively "squashing" the note and bringing the quiet and loud parts of a note closer together (hence, compression). Since the peak level is now lower, the overall level of the signal can be raised with gain. The note SEEMS to grow as the compression releases, allowing the trail to come out full volume.
Very nice and simple demonstartion without getting to fancy, very helpful, thanks!
Have been looking for my own tone, This video is a great inspiration.
Thanks
Keep Posting.
When I find my tone will share here.
i wanted to start singing at 4.35 "YOU GOT TO BE CRAZY!!"lol
Great walkthrough of the dotted eighths.
I'm digging this, but in my set up, and of course I'm not really trying to sound like David Gilmour, but he is one of my biggest inspirations, anyway I am using an OCD, also have a Lovepedal super lead, but the nicest two pedals that add to my semi gilmour sound, is the blackout effectors musket fuzz, I can get any era of the big muff, out of it. The other pedal is, the Catalinbread Echorec, it's based on the Benson echorec, obviously not as cool as the old school magnetic drum version but it is very close for something you would want to take on tour! Anyway thanks for making this video, it's always interesting to see someone else's take.
Totally agree - the Musket is one of the finest pedals out there :)
Great video. Nice and detailed with lots of samples. Much appreciated!
dude when he did the run like hell type riff at the end, like i just uncontrollably started dancing.
As a rule of thumb, OCD's with red LED's are version 4. Until version 4 they had blue LED's, although some very early v4's do have blue LED's. The v4 also has different graphics with arrows around the knobs and so on.
Great work around regardless of what is or isn't. In the end it doesn't matter because you're duplicating a Gilmour tone so accurately. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter how you get there if you can find the right way for you. Thanks for an amazing demo of finding ones way!
I forgot to mention how very cool of you it to recommend Gilmourish.com! I've been following the site for a few years & is an amazing resource for all things Gilmour. Bjorn has been a huge help for me and has kept me from wasting a ton of time & money! The added bonus is that they've *_never_* spammed me nor does Bjorn try to sell you anything, he's apparently in it just for the love of helping other Gilmour freaks as myself!
Thanks, i just have got a : Nova Delay, Deja Vine, Bass Big Muff, Soul fool, Mistress,Behriger vintaga Phase, Trio+, Mojomojo, Tc Hall and Chorus, mm. And now i just have to learn, to play Pink Floyd. Startet on Numb. Just played clasisk guitar , and electric guitar is very difrent. Erik Denmark 😉❤️👍🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
It's R. K. Butler , NOT ' BK ' He is the 80's wonderkind electrical engineering tekkie behind 'Real Tube", 'Blue Tube', and the famous 'Tube Works' product lines. Formerly produced in Denver, Colorado, & moving around the Western US , partnering with the good peeps @ Genz-Benz in Arizona for a development sojourn, and currently chairing Butler Audio, Inc. Many of his famous goodies are available directly on-line
I'm happy to still have a 1-12 combo with his Mos-FET amp design. Sweet !
Kudos man! This is quite near his tone! But i believe he also used a Proco RAT to get his lead tones.
@SurfGreenStrato i know what u mean buddy, i meant no attack. offcourse its a personal preference.. i guess its what our ears atune to and like a little bit more to another...but in the end of the day, both players are fantastic,... i can listen to both for hours and hours
wow , you really nailed the tone on part 2!
Nice job with the explanations and all. Thanks for the vid! Cheers!
That was very very illustrative. Great info. Thank you
Good, clear vid, thx. Keep them coming.
I enjoyed this post - thanks!
A very intelligent demo !
I have a Mistress 'one of the older ones without the dot on the I' and a modified Big muff and I can get some good Gilmou,r and Hendrix, sounds with just those 2 and a strat. There is a guy on ebay that modifys the Big Muffs to the vintage circuitry of the 60's,70s, he also sells em. They are for distortion, and very versatile.
To get his pulse era tone, take all this and add a set of Emg-SA pickups to it.
Xotic BB is also a great overdrive for these tones... great vid !
Most working guitarists have to play covers, and when you play a relatively famous song people want it to sound like what they know off the record. that's why there are so many videos with people showing how to get Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix tones.
Nice lesson and nice chops dude!
yep! just installed em! amazing!
This is great! I just learned tons in 13 mins
The amp was a Mesa Lone Star!
Really enjoyed the way you explained this. Im new to effects, especially delay. Thank you.
My main FX that I use:
Big Muff Pi
MXR DynaComp
Marshall BB-2 (lo-gain booster)
Fulltone OCD
MXR Phase 90
Joyo Classic Chorus
Mooer ElecLady Flanger
Mooer Shimverb
Mooer Reecho
(The Mooers are good for getting the tone for the "Time" solo)
Boss DD-7
EHX Analogizer
....and a Crybaby, Boss PS-6 Harmonizer, Joyo Classic Crunch OD (none of those are really used for my Gilmour stuff) and a Jetter Gold Shift OD if one of the OD pedals break during a gig or session..
The Mooer ElecLady is an OUTSTANDING flanger and for about $50 new! It is the best of every other type of flanger I have tried (for my taste and aside from the real-deal). The Shimverb has a great sounding spring reverb but the shimmer is noise to my ears (I finally got the BigSky). The Mooer Trelicopter is also a good tremolo for the money. Those are the cheapest pedals on my board but they sound high-end (too me). I want to get an OCD and a BD. Currently use a TS9 and an Angry Charlie v3...
other pedals I use:
Dark Side
Boss Comp
Boss Boost
Nova Delay (ND-1)
Ibanez Weeping Demon or the Morley Mark Tremonti wah
For switching, I use the octaswitch (reduces tap dancing).
Update: sold the Mooer delay and reverb pedals, sold the OCD and Jetter Gold Shift. Sold the Dynacomp as well as the Marshall BB-2.
I now use two comps, a Mooer Yellow Comp and an MI Effects Comp/Gate
Boosters: RC, MI Boost n Buff.
Main ODs: Bearfoot Silver Bee, Jetter Jet Drive, Keeley SPMge, AC Booster and MI Effects Blue Boy Deluxe.
Fuzz: MI GI silicon Fuzz, Caroline Olympia
Muffs: EHX Green Russian Reissue and a NYC modded to Violet Ram's Head specs.
Distortion: Vick Audio V-2, Proco RAT
Delay: MXR Echoplex, DD-7, TC Vintage Delay. (I have a Source Audio Nemesis but I am still learning to use it).
Mods: Still use the E-Lady, and my Boss MIJ CE-2, Phase 90 script clone (or an EHX Bad Stone), NUX Monterey Vibe and a Digitech Ventura for Rotary.
I have a Keeley Dark Side Workstation set up in one loop in my switcher, with a cheap Power Booster for 3 songs.
Ofc I don't always use all these pedals, but I find I can get a good DG tone with that lot.
If I want simple, I just grab the Mooer Yellow, the Jetdrive, Mooer E-Lady, the Dark Side, my old Visual Sound H20 and my trusty DD7.
For Reverb I have a Pedal Projects Marbleverb but am picking up the new Specular Reverb V.3 next week. Imo it is better than a Strymon Blue Sky and about $120 cheaper (pedals are really expensive here in Australia).
My switching systems are Boss ES-8 and an Analgman A/B w/remote.
For my simple board I use a Voodoo Lab PX-8 switcher.
How do you like the Dark Side? Is yours a V.1 or V.2?
It may also help to use a rotary speaker or a rotary effect because he uses rotating speakers driven by hiwatt heads speaker also
I use my charvel pro mod with either the split nut humbucker or split bridge humbucker. I turn up my delay to max on my fly 3 by blackstar. That sounds pretty damn Gilmour!!
Ooooh that tune
Excellent vid man! Thank you.
Great simple gear to achieve some Gilmour tones.
Nice work.
Thanks!!!
Awesome video thanks
@juggHERnutt U can get it at guitarcenter, musicians friend or where ever else sells it, theres no BEST place to get it, its about $250
Well I have an ocd and many muff variants and the ocd is not going to get you quite the sustain or the tone.
But it still sounds pretty cool.
GREAT SOUND! THANX
Nailed it.
very nice mate !!!
very nice video !
thanks a lot
Out of the box, yes but with a treble boost and compressor and the right amp you can get them to sing, still not like a Les Paul but better than just straight into the amp with an overdrive pedal.
You know if you are trying to demo gilmour.. may help to play his well known licks.. but good demo of the pedals!
@pok0000
You can get the nova repeater for 150$ it has less functions, but the essential ones are still there. I got it for 120$ on e bay and it is fantastic. You can nail run like hell easily.
Nailed it
I have a stereo electric mistress with chorus and flanger built in and I think it does a great job combining the sounds you are getting with the deja vu and the deluxe mistress and it's cheaper
What settings do you use? I'm curious
easiest way to get his sort of tone is to have delay but make it really really really short.. like a slap back sorta.. it thickens the sound and sustains it a little.. and put that after a blues driver.
The only thing you are missing is a muff fuzz. Nice tones for sure though. Thanks for the cool video.
great ! well done !
Do a google search for David Gilmour tone building. It won't let me post the link on here.It is also a good Gilmour Tone Building Site along with gilmourish site Rig effects, backing tracks and so on. Rock on Gilmour fans!!!
i've got some 12 pedals and two multieffect boards and with these i can do ANY sound i wish--there are so many parameters to sculpt with, no need for tens of thousands of dollars of custom pedals- Gilmour has them because it's his profession and professional guys just naturally saturate
David said in a video "He doesnt care what it looks like or how old it is as long as he gets the sound he wants" ....I took that as maybe he uses a few beater pedals maybe
Get a Boss compressor, no buzz
👍👍👍👍nor annoying hum -- and adds volume without sounding like total crap! Compressors are absolutely ESSENTIAL!!! You'll wonder how you ever lived without them.
is the deja vibe a phaser or flanger because it encompasses the breathe tone perfectly
just a great vid
Superb video. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I currently don't have a deja-vibe and the closest would be my MXR EVH Phase 90 ... will that do at a low setting or would you still recommend a flanger or vibe pedal. Also, in your set up ... would you use the Electric Mistress and Deja-Vice together or one only at a time depending on what the tone you want is.
I se a Tonebone Trimode and have the phase 90 dedicated to the line 2 output so it comes on only when the second or my "lead" '2'' channel is activated.
I appreciate your time
Did you know that ND-1 Nova delay lets you hold the tap temp button and strum your guitar to set tempo without having to tap your foot?
Damn, now I gotta save up and get these pedals! Haha amazing sound
I'm using my Zoom G3n for the modulation effects and I have that running through the fx loop on my Marshall DSL40C but instead of a Big Muff I'm using A Dunlop Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face. Not spot on accurate but it works just fine untill I buy a big muff any ways.
What are the best settings for the compressor and the flanger to get Gilmour's tone?
question: how come didn't you make a video on Eric Johnson? He is THE king tone in my opinion. Thx!
Its not always about trying to sound like or mimic somebody and not yourself. These are the people that have mastered the guitar and we took up guitar because of what they were able to do.... why not learn from the best then integrate those tones and techniques into your sound?
I have this pedal....cool...(nova delay)
WHAT ARE THE BEST AMP FOR DAVID GILMOUR SOUND , FENDER DEVILLE OR FENDER HOD ROD DELUXE?
Get a Sweet Sound Mojo Vibe for the REAL Univibe tone!!
Everybody knows you have to have a Big Muff or Fuzz Face to cop his solo sustain sound. I loved the video though.
Great vid. Hope you make Eric's Johnson sound some day:)
How did Gilmour scrap up the money when he was getting started before he became famous for all these expensive pedals? Do you have the delay settings for the pedals?
Starting out, he didn't have that many pedals. But he did have nice gear. It was his life. He invested his money into his career. Along the way, I'm sure the band funds paid for some stuff. Then, they were quickly becoming bigger, and could afford many different things easily. For example, if you go and watch live at Pompeii, he's running hiwatt amps, fuzz face and binson echorec delay. I'm sure he had other stuff, but that was the core of his sound in very early 70's. Check out Gilmourish.com for an era by era breakdown of his gear. It's an amazing site! Bjorn Riss runs the site, and is a boss when it comes to gilmour!
Oh, and check out gilmourish site, and his companion TH-cam for delay settings! This video actually recommends gilmourish as well. Good luck!
how Many people does it take to play guitar ........1....... and 2000 to talk about the technique....
