    I’ve actually got the same dilemma concerning using the dealer for my 20k service. I’ve been driving Porsches for 40+ years and, in past, have used independent Porsche repair shops. However, the newer Porsches have so much electronic gear controlling the car that I, too, am going to the Porsche dealer for this service and all others until the car is out of warranty or until I sell it. I hate paying the dealership’s ridiculous overinflated service prices, but feel like we’re caught between a rock and a hard place. P.S. I know this is a bit older video of yours, but I’ve been following your channel for quite awhile. Keep up the great job, Joe!

    Michelin Pilot Sport 4S . Recently came out and they’re amazing on my Porsche.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the recommendation!!! Glad to hear they are working out well on you Porsche. I assume better grip and responsiveness, and if so, great. Is that right? Is there more tire roar on the highway?

    • @dhgoodall1
      @dhgoodall1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Hutchinson My GTS came with the Pirelli P Zeros and the Michelin PS4S is like night and day. So much more grip and turn in. I was really skeptical, but they are a tremendous improvement. About more road noise, I would guess not much more if any. It’s difficult to tell because I have the Cayman GTS which has more engine induction sound in the cabin than the 911, so I really can’t tell. I do auto cross and track too.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for the feedback. Since I do long journeys with my wife, several hundred miles in one sitting, I was curious about tire roar. For example, a guy at auto cross has Bridgestone RE71s (I think?) and he said they are great on track/auto cross, but are very load in normal driving. When I am cutting up the back roads or at auto cross, tire roar doesn't matter one bit. But for our road trips it would. Thanks for the info!

    • @davidclay442
      @davidclay442 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just put a new set of Michelin pilot sports on my Boxster. I noticed an immediate difference in responsiveness, road noise, and feedback from the steering wheel. I bought the car with Good Year tires and I would feel a bit uncontrolled on the highway with some swerving, but this is no longer a problem with the pilot sports. Highly recommended.

    Joe, really great videos. I own a 2014 911 S and absolutely love every aspect - the design, the engine, the ride...
    One Question for you - have you found the 911’s you’ve owned to have an internal rattle here and there, and if so, have you just lived with it? It can be hard to track down those little noises and a 911 is tightly wound by definition.
    Keep up the great vids!

    I own a 2015 GTS and I do most of the maintenance myself. The 2 year service is an overpriced oil change. I would have requested the oil change and brake fluid flush. The cabin filters are easy to change as well as the windshield wipers. I haven’t changed the wipers in four years yet since I clean them regularly and use Gummi Pledge to protect the rubber. I am also a working man that likes to protect my money the best way possible. Get ready for the 4 year or 40,000 miles service. When the time comes just take it for the spark plugs and learn how to do your own oil change and air filters change. You can do it!

    Joe, I appreciate your updates and watch each with interest. I have a '15 GTS in Guards Red w/Aerokit, otherwise pretty similar to yours 'cept too that mine is a C4. Yours is subtler-looking, mine is rather loud, which suits me just fine. My service (is, will be) done by top-end speed guys in town (Bellevue, WA) at less cost than dealer and equal if not superior competency. I do, however, like my dealer. My 20K will be coming up probably in '19, I'm doing by-mileage vs. by-year. BTW: these are spectacular autocross cars, you're right about that! All-hail PDK for that...

    I recommend the Pilot Super Sport tires for summer if they make them in the size you need. Excellent tires. Also, it sucks that they damaged your wheels... I'd definitely see what they can do about that. To them it's another car, especially the service guys, to you, it's your baby. Maybe you can find an independent Porsche shop that takes better care and maybe charges less. Beautiful Porsche, congratulations.

  • @18echosf
    @18echosf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Joe, you seem to be a sharp, intelligent guy and I’m very surprised that you continue to use Porsche dealerships for your service work. I’ve been driving Porsches as my daily drivers for 38 years and I learned a long time ago to find a good, reliable, & well respected local independent Porsche mechanic to keep your car in good working order. I raced motorcycles for 15 years and tracked Porsches for 8 years and used to do all of my own service work. However, as I aged and stopped doing track events, I eventually passed my service work on to a local independent shop. I’m sure you can locate one in your area by asking around at the autocross events you do. In my educated opinion, you’ll save quite a bit of money and the work will be done well and to your satisfaction.you’ll be much happier when you establish a relationship with a good independent Porsche mechanic. One last thing: Having your service work done outside of a Porsche dealership does not void any warranty on your car. P.S. I really enjoy your channel. How you feel about your car really shines thru.

    Yep! It’s very experienced to get dealership service that’s one reason why I traded my used Porsche Boxster for a Mustang Bullitt. Long term the Mustang is great for performance, reliability and cost. The Porsche is awesome performance car but it’s premium price also has premium costs for maintenance. I still love the Porsche cars, but based on my wallet, the Bullitt is just fine! It’s a blast to drive and in many ways preferable to a 911, IMHO.

      Joe Hutchinson - please let me know how you like it. It’s not as loud or crazy sounding as the 350 but it’s got more refined sounding exhaust note but and loud too. It’s more understated. Cooler but not as bad ass. It’s got the digital dash and auto rev matching on down shifts which is fun. Best of all it’s much cheaper for just as much fun in everyday driving. It’s more of a daily then the 350, in my opinion.

    I found a DIY place that rents lifts, with tools, for $20 an hour. The guy is careful putting the car on the lift.
    There is nothing in the 911 regular maintenance that is beyond the capability of an experienced DIYer.

      I had communicated the wheel damage to management and they promise to fix the wheel. Likely refinish the wheel as opposed to a brand new wheel. That's fine I suppose. I am entrusting the Porsche service team to know how to handle their own products so to receive the car back with damage is unacceptable.
      The car itself is great and it is worth it to stay on top of maintenance to keep the car operating at its best.

    curious why you might not keep an extra set of wheels. Save you from mounting and dismounting, balancing tires, etc. plus tires/wheels take the same storage space as tires more or less. I know they cost a fair bit, but for winter, you could get the cheapest porsche wheels stocked for the car, and also go one inch smaller, especially if you get snow and ice in your area.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are 100% right. I should do that. Years ago, I looked in to the prices of another set of centerlock Porsche wheels and the cost was a bit of a turn off. But I don't have to go Porsche. But you are so correct, a second set of wheels with the tires mounted would be a much better way to go. I had a second set of wheels with winters mounted for my previous Porsche, a 997.2 C2.

    Great looking car. I think I saw you can buy a single lug torque wrench for Porsches for $600 (Porsche buyers say never get this option btw), if your not a rich man, buy one and switch the tires yourself. Also, any knucklehead can switch air filters in 5 minutes at home. I do oil changes, changed my brakes, replaced my engine/transmission mounts and replaced my heater core. I'm not rich either, but I watch lots of youtube videos, spend some money on tools and refuse to pay for a mechanic when I can do it myself. Do all the easy stuff yourself. And clean and moisturise your leather seats once a month too.

    Beautiful spec on your car. I would take it to the dealer and shell out to keep it at 100% too. But speaking of which, are they going to do something about the scratched wheel? Not like they can argue that it was curbed where that scratch is - it’s obviously from the center lock removal. Unfortunately stuff like this happens even at the dealer.... we’ve had a few issues with ours as well but they eventually made it right.

  • @tribe_called_oh
    @tribe_called_oh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hey there Chief... sorry to hear about your wheel scratch woes. After (2) bad experiences (and counting), I am not sure why you keep going back to stealership service. anyhow, hate to tell you this, but you got hosed for that service visit.
    If I were you, I would've gone to Deman Motorsport. take a tour of the facility, and you tell me who you would rather have wrench on your car? most of the 20K mi service is just upcharging you for unnecessary stuff that doesn't even get done. Zep Cleaner is literally just a cleaning solvent... they probably barely used any, but charged you for the whole bottle. You could've gotten all that done for half price at a reputable speed shop.
    As for Brake Fluid changes... now that you are starting to DE, you MUST to do one at the start of every season, no question. DE guys who run their cars hard do them more than once a season, but for you... once at the beginning is all you will need.
    As for summer tires, PS4S is a very versatile tire. it is basically the next iteration of the PSS. I haven't driven the PS4S, but I have had a dozen or so sets of PSS. next iterations are basically same difference with an updated tread pattern and a newer mixture of compound/construction. good news for you is... that there is a sale on tirerack.com for the PSS atm. I would jump on that, as it's a great deal on a great tire.
    Hope all that helps. let me know if you need an intro at Deman Motorsport, or if you are in the Blauvelt/Tarrytown area, just stop by and see for yourself. let Rick know Eugene GT4 says hello!

      Hey, thanks for the recommendations! I wasn’t aware of Deman Motorsport. I need to pay them a visit. I have heard of Rennewerke in Elmsford. Have you heard anything about them? At any rate, I will pay Deman a visit.
      I’ll have the dealership make good on the wheel scratch. They will have it repaired, refinished. I was thinking of having that done in the spring, after the winter season is over.
      Thanks for the recommendations on the tires. A number of people are recommending the new versions as you see. I’ll check them both out.
      So helpful. Thanks!

      Joe Hutchinson Hey Joe, I would recommend letting the dealer know now about the wheels and have them promise and better yet note in their system that they are fixing them in spring. Remember, you’ll be getting a satisfaction survey and I’m sure they want the exceptional rating. I believe it is tied to their compensation so it matters a lot to them. Good luck.

      @tribe_called_oh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't run the PS4 bc i usually go with a stickier stiffer tire on my track cars, but tirerack is running a clearance deal on PSS. And i don't think he will know the difference. So worth the cost benefit in my opinion.

    Another vote for the Michelin Pilot Sport C4 which replaced my Pirelli P-Zero's, which is a good tire but the new Michelin's ride better and have the performance you need for street and light track. You also can save some money and by the non "N" spec version which is what I did, "N" spec version is Porsche approved and a little softer compound which wear faster and from what I hear are made in Germany and the non "N" version are made in France with a harder compound for better mileage, great tire!

    $1300 for maintenance?? Hyundai tried to get me at 15000 miles for the same amount...for my Accent😄 Of course I told them they were out of their minds and to take my car off their lift. I think it was for oil change, filter changes, maybe a flush and brake service. It should be noted that the brakes lasted another 110k miles after that before being replaced. Just goes to show how devious people can be.

    Joe, I had the same issue with the pirelli's on my c63 also, I switched to some Falken FK453's and they were the best tire I've driven on, not many people like them because they're "Falkens" but they are amazing tires, great in the rain, great all around, it feels like the car is stuck on rails with them. I've used most of the other brands of tires too and found they took way to long to heat up, the falkens heat up pretty quick. Check them out.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson

      It’s one wheel that’s damaged so the plan is to have the dealership, or really a sub contractor paid by the dealership, refinish it. I am going to wait until spring to have that done, when I need to switch back to summer tires.

      You know what, you are right. In fact, when they first installed the LED lights, they were pointing to the ground. Then I went back and they raised them so that I was blinding oncoming traffic. It took this third time for them to get it right. That should have sent me a message about these guys already. I am disappointed in them. When I lived in Pasadena, CA, the Rusnak Porsche service guys were on point. No issues. I had a Boxster back then for years. I assumed that Porsche service centers nationwide have to meet standards but this one near me in NY isn't cutting it.

    Please do not accept a refinish of the alloy wheel as an reasonable solution. I had a similar incident with my Golf GTI after a service with a alloy damaged and they didn't even change the tyres (English). At hand-back after the service I spotted the damage and hit the roof, the fact that they didn't even own up to the issue and tried to hand the car over hoping i wouldn't notice... as if. They tried to soften the impact and offer a refinish smart repair, but I demanded a new alloy and they didn't really question it and within a week I had a new alloy. Go back to them and demand a new alloy, refurbs or refinishes are never near a OEM finish. I have found a tyre shop that respects wheels when changing tyres and would pay a premium for that service, but they are very reasonable. I would highly recommend the Michelin range and have PSS all round and they were a massive upgrade on the outgoing Dunlop Maxx Sports. Go with a Porsche specialist service shop in the future, your warranty will not be void if they use original Porsche parts. Never use a dealer for tyres, huge mark up, can't believe you agreed for them to change the windscreen wipers, jeez that is a 1 min job per wiper and you can pick up original spec wipers from any decent parts shop for a fraction of the price. I don't mean to be critical but you can really reduce your running costs by being a little bit smarter with the consumable parts. You can even supply the oil for a service and not pay dealer prices.

    It's weird how the GTS lights didn't come with the blackened housing. I had a '15 Boxster GTS and part of that GTS package was the black accents including front and rear lights.

    • @Joe_Hutchinson
      @Joe_Hutchinson  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right. Here is the thing. The dealer specc'd the car and it was on the showroom when I purchased it. The dealer ordered the car with the optional PDLS+ lights with the standard color housing of grays and silvers instead of the standard bi-Xenon lights in black that come with the GTS. I wanted the black versions of the PDLS+ lights so I purchased them after and had them swapped in. So since the rear lights came with the fronts that had gray and silver housings, the rears are not darkened like the normal GTS. I wish they were.
