    I used to own an Electraglide Classic and worked in 2 Harley dealerships for 6yrs eventually becoming a sales manager. When I left the business in 2010 I got a Victory for the superior engine and transmission. Now I just got a BMW touring bike. I still love Harley styling...but they have really dropped the ball in technological advancements and convenience features for the rider. Honda and BMW are simply far better machines even compared to a Harley that someone put an extra $6-8k into. I wish HD would get their heads out of their asses...for the premium price, riders should be getting a lot more.

      AndTheCorrectAnswerIs Now that I own a Wing, I see exactly what you mean-especially since the M8s came out. Lots of quality-control issues!

    • @mqbitsko25
      @mqbitsko25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indian is offering a choice between "vintage" and "modern." Of course, their "vintage" machines make Harleys look like worn out lawnmowers, but the "modern" ones are in a totally other class. You can get air cooled or water cooled. Take your pick.

      Yes, but when you ride a Harley, you ride with brothers. When you ride a Honda, you ride alone.

    Mike, you don't need to justify your choice! Yes, I have a Limited and enjoyed your escapades when I was shopping but I was considering the 2018 Goldwing, the 2018 Star Venture, and the BMW K1600GTL at the time as well. I still have my BMW K1200GT in addition to the 2018 Limited and my opinion is this is a personal thing like what shoes you like, and if they have 2 wheels and an engine what's not to like! Don't justify it, ride it, and enjoy it! I must say though that the DCT is a game changer and allows more time spent paying attention to the roadway and less on a sore left hand in traffic!

    • @maikeli7

      I have been looking at exactly the same including the bagger versions the eluder had me until i found out its air cooled and belt drive. The problem i have is i ride a st1300 it holds a xl each pannier and 2 in top and i wanted similar but all the new bikes are smaller none have the storage but the venture does have a huge topbox. To me its such a shame they are making these beasts smaller it really defeats what a large tourer was created for. my dream bike would be
      1. full size luggage
      2. tow bar as standard
      3. slide out side plates under the top box allowing bulky light things to be strapped on
      4. a top box rack with good weight capacity.
      what i dont need is 1000 settings in a dash. a radio or sound system bettered by a £200 bluetooth that i need to chat to my pillion anyway and a satnav that sucks. If someone released a bike built for storage and touring as above i would do what i never said i would and buy one new tomorrow regardless the price. oh shit wait i already own it now where can i buy a good trailer hitch and how can i make the side plates

    There are lots of other bikes with nav systems, Bluetooth, heated surfaces, and power windshields... but, there are two things on the new Goldwing were revelations to me when I first experienced it... and anyone else who's only ever ridden "conventional" motorcycles will feel the same. One is the DCT. First of all, you just don't know how nice it is not having to shift until you've tried it; secondly, the speed at which it can execute shifts is AMAZING! Same technology as on modern exotic cars, and if it's amazing on a Ferrari, I can only describe it as otherworldly on a Goldwing. Two is the reverse. Especially for a shorter rider, it's like a new found freedom, not having to worry about parking where you want regardless of which way the road is inclined. Couple other things like the stock led lighting (outperforms HD Daymakers - and that's saying something), and central locking is just icing on the cake!
    Btw, if you haven't already, check out the Pathfinder LED sequential cowl lights... one of my favourite upgrades for the new Wing. Oh, and you can still potentially shift into the wrong gear... if you ever ride in "manual" mode 😝

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yamaha FJR 1300 has F1 derived secuencial semi auto gear box since 2006, 145 hp, excellent for sport touring, accelerates, handle, brakes like a dream. And its almost unbreakable, 200.000 miles without major issues are well common.

    Congrats. I rode Harleys for 27 years but last year I traded my '16 RGU in for an '18 DCT Goldwing Tour. The first test ride left me speechless about how great the bike was, but it took two more test rides before I finally relented and admitted to myself that I would trade my Harley in for a Honda. 5K+ miles later and I have zero regrets, the Wing is the best touring bike I've ever owned or ridden. Enjoy!

I could related to what you said about shifting stiff clutch and noise that cancels my music and gps voice directions.I’m 67 now and considering buying dct goldwing . Waiting for 2020 wings to be released. Now days I don’t have to prove a thing to anyone, at my age looking for comfort quiet machine, automatic and reverse. I divorced my reverse quite some time no one to push the bike when I get into a situation. Lol.

      Ted Dworak I feel the same! Still got a 1200 SuperLow and Street Glide with the 103, but those new Wings are getting mighty irresistible😊
      I live in the city and the Sportster is just so fun, easy, and convenient for those spur of the moment rides around town. On the other hand, I t's like an event every time I take the SG out, taking the cover off, removing the charger, pushing it out of its corner of the garage (front wheel and left bag have to be against walls to make room for old lady's car)... but it's so nice for those all day rides. Thing is, with Honda injecting some of their sport bike DNA into the new Goldwing, I see it being able to do the job of both the HD's.

    Congratulations! I’m a die hard Harley fan myself. Had to sell my Road King because my medical problems just made it impossible to feel safe and secure on the road. A 2 hour ride would have me recovering for 3-4 days. Post shoulder replacement still leaves me at a deficit in mobility and reaction time. The love of riding far out weighs the love of a single brand. This is an excellent option for guys like us with disabilities but still love to ride.

    • @maikeli7
      @maikeli7  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is a great option and it not only allows us to ride on, but to ride better than we ever thought possible. Sorry for your pain, as I can commiserate. The bike is the one thing that balances the equation of increasing age, pain, and inability to do things.

    Doesn't matter what you ride, you define the bike... not the other way around. Forget about the mystique, the image, the brand loyalty. I encourage riders to experience all types of bikes during their life of riding. Last time I checked we still live in a democracy, so we should be able to buy, ride and enjoy any bike we can get our hands on. You do not have to explain your bike decisions to anyone. I, myself, have owned and enjoyed lots of bikes, from 200# putt-putts, to 950# heavy touring bikes, loved all of them. Nothing wrong with a Harley... but it is just a bike.

    Mike I loved my Ultra Classic...2017 Stage 2. It ran great, handled great for a big girl, very easy to ride, and reliable as an anvil. Someone close to me was killed on his bike so I go spooked and sold it. Before the HD I had an F6B Goldwing. Reliable, handled great, and was plenty fast enough. Now I have a BMW R1250 GSA and love it. But still....I love Harleys. Ride what you enjoy and what works for you. We are blessed to live in a era with such great machines!

    I have a buddy who has this exact machine, color and all. My Road King is the exact opposite of this kind of bike. Where this is silky smooth and has refinement beyond measure, my King is a bit of a rattly, shaking beast. I would love to own both of these bikes. There is something visceral about the King that just makes you smile, where the smooth, crisp refinement of the Wing makes you smile also, just in a different way. They are true polar opposites.

      If you like to lean hard, if you like to get up and go quick, and power out of turns; if you love comfort, convenience, and quiet, then this is a must-try machine! If you like relaxed touring with scenery aplenty and not too aggressive riding, then the Ultra or RG or SG is a far superior choice.

    Hey M7. Congratulations on the new bike. I know this can seem like a controversial change, but I totally get it. This new generation Goldwing seems like a fantastic machine. I love the look and it certainly seems to have the feature set. I know a lot of people are complaining about the reduced storage and fuel capacity, but I think that is going to be a subjective thing as this will affect (or not) riders in different ways. The DCT? That I am not so sure about. If it means either being able to ride or not then I would obviously go with the DCT, but that would be a desperation move on my part. I will shift my own for as long as I am able. Having said that, many reviews I have seen and read really rate the DCT highly. And it does have a manual mode, so not all is lost! I had a Spyder RSS SE5 and that tranny never missed a shift. Ultimately, though, I got bored with it and traded it for the Vision.
    I ride a '14 Victory Vision (owned the bike since new) so I know about big V's. At this phase of my life there is no way I am trading my Vision for something like this. But as time goes on I may one day come to that fork in the road where I either make a change or quit riding. If that day comes, the new 'Wing will be one of the bikes I look at.
    So congrats again. I hope you get many carefree miles from this new bike. Ride on...

    Love the black on the 2019 Wing! After a few street bikes and a full dress Suzuki GS850, I bought my first GoldWing at the young age of 22 after a neighbor let me take a ride on his and I knew I had to have one and with the exception of a 2016 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited, GoldWings are the only bikes that I have owned since that first ride. I absolutely loved my Ultra Limited but I had to go back to the Wing, In addition to many of the points that you made, the adjustable windshield is great and the absence of the engine heat in traffic is great. If I could justify having two tour bikes in the garage I would have both. Funny, when I bought the Ultra Limited the dealership acted like they was doing me a favor too! ....By the way, you can lean a whole lot more before you drag a peg on the Dragon!! Just saw this video again, and I think you’re right; back in ‘72 the Honda 750 was one of the number 1, and the most popular Honda big bikes! (I don’t recall them having anything larger until the GoldWing). So, from your dad (I’m about his age, and had all Honda’s, from the 450, 750, & GoldWing), I’d say, thank you son! ( that’s what I’d say to my son if he’d do that)!
    He’d be mighty happy with your selection of the GoldWing! (I don’t even know you and I’m happy lol!)
    Enjoy the ride; as for me, I’m sold on it; having had one of those original - a brownish red color, a 1977 or 78 model. I had been riding for about 10 years or more, and although lots of guys were getting the Kawasaki 900’s , beemers, Yamaha, Harley Davison’s - a big seller (I almost bought one). As a long time rider and a pretty recent left below the knee amputee, this DCT bike is now checking a lot of my boxes too. My big concern is I drive in a fairly busy area, mostly on city streets. My last bike was a BMW K1600GT which I dearly miss, and even that was a pain to lug around. I worry the GW would be worse, though the fact it's lower is a plus for sure. And if you still worry about the lean angle on the bike, fear not and youtube Yellow Wolf. He rides on and humbles squids on the dragon with his.

      Thanks for the info on Yellow Wolf. He is definitely at a skill level I wish to achieve. On my GW, I feel lower to the ground and more planted. The bike has a lower center of gravity than anything I have ridden thus far, and this is very reassuring, making the bike feel much lighter than its 841 pounds. If you have a chance to demo a DCT Tour, I think you will be very happy with it.

    This video and bike might be what gets me back on a bike, after a 40 year break. I had a '74 honda 550, totaled that on the Blue Ridge Pkw, in Oct. '77. Two moths later, I received the first bike to dethrone the Kawi Z-1, the KZ 900 was the fastest bike you could buy for about 5 years, until Yamaha came out with the XS-Eleven in 1978. 11.7 seconds in the quarter, out of the create, I had the very first one in Miami. I was 21 years old and enjoying the fastest most advanced bike by far back then. I road to the Keys often and all over S. Fl. and to Mich. twice, it was the best 3-4 years of my life,.. I haven't owned a bike since then, but I'm thinking about traveling across the country again on one of these new Gold Wings. They seem so nice, well engineered and the slow cruiser should keep me from racing around everywhere like when I was young, but still offer that feeling of riding a bike, state to state, for 6 months or a year maybe. One more time. This video helped me feel normal for still wanting to ride. I just don't know if I would like that automatic, what if I hate it? they don't give out test rides much. I think it could be ok, but I never thought I could even consider such a thing on a big. I guess if I'm giving up the handling and speed, I could also give up the shifting, but then it's so different from riding like it used to be, just not sure yet. Thank you for the video.

    Was I ever surprised? I am glad you chose the DCT. I was sure the Harley would let you down before you would make the leap. My outlook on your videos will change, because I was always waiting for the next Harley issue. If I was able, a white DCT would be my new ride. Take care of that beautiful ride. Be safe. Oh! What do STOP signs mean?

      I had owned Harleys (four of them) from 2006 to 2019, and I have never had a problem with what the factory produced. All my issues were ever because of things I did or things the techs did and screwed up. What led to this is that I changed. My needs changed. I evolved into a different kind of rider, and I needed a bike to fit who I wanted to be.

    Had an Ultra limited. Sold it after less than a year. Was no fun to ride with a passenger. I now have a 2019 Goldwing. So much better balanced. Not to mention that thr Ultra wind buffeting on the highway was awful. The Goldwing allows me to completely eliminate wind buffeting. Alo love forward and reverse creep mode

    Congrats on that purchase. I have a 2017 Indian Roadmaster that I love but...I test road the 2018 GW DCT about a year ago and I thought wow...what an awesome machine. I even went back to the dealer yesterday to “think about it again”. Should I or shouldn’t I?

    Congratulations on the new bike will miss the Harley videos mainly because your Harley and mine were just alike besides the stage 4, I had a goldwing that I traded for my Harley and I loved it, just wanted to try the Harley and I love it too, all that matters is ride what makes you happy.

      @@maikeli7 oh yeah for sure I'll keep watching I'm not one of those guys that get butt hurt about what someone rides and because I use to ride a goldwing I make it a point to show respect to those guys to because I didn't get that myself riding a wing.

    Hey Bro, I can relate. I have Harley Softail and have arthtist in my left hand and cannot even make a fist. My riding activities have fallen off due to the pain. Looking at other alternatives like the DCT. Another point, I could lose the 'Screamin' Eagles' and not miss it. In retirement, I love quiet.

      @maikeli7  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Yours is a familiar story to which Harley should pay heed!
      Sorry for your troubles, but I’m confident you’ll find the right solution for you. May we both have many joyful years of riding ahead!

      It's the standard TH-cam music library stuff. I think this one was found by searching for "epic doom" or some such. :-D
