It's easy to forget these big studios are just a bunch of individual human beings who are geniuses in their own fields. Like, every Dreamworks movie, there is someone who gets to say "See that hair strand right there? I was the one who made it look like that in the lighting! It took like 10 hours, and I had to invent a never before seen method of layering, but I think it looks pretty good, huh?" or "Dude, see how the ice cream wets the fur when he drops it on the dog character? Man, that took me like 7 hours to render 1 second!"
jojolafrite90 Because rendering isn't work. Apart from some setup work on the renderer and perhaps some special settings for channel separation based on the scene, no human work is needed for the rendering process. It just happens on the farm after everything else is done.
As a 3D artist I can definitely say yup, rendering is automated. That being said, it's probably someone from the editorial team that sets it up for being rendered in the first place, i.e. getting the correct codec, file format for whatever project there are doing. Though most would be a lossless format anyways...
8:33 that's a great way to break the fourth wall... explaining in only a second how an animated model gets its life from pose to pose to acting and personality.
this is why I can totally Appreciate Animated films and even "shorts". its not just Do a little sketch or 2, slap it together and Viola you have a animated film, there is Alot of ingenuity, planning and Hard work behind it! and pride in the finished product. I have total Respect for all that goes into creating them, And Thanks and Congrats to all the individuals who lend your Talent and Ingenuity to make Animated films Possible :)
DUSTERDUDE238 you are infinity right in all that you say! Thanks for say it, not all the people noticed all the work with need on this movies and in a shotfilms.
THis is just such a great explanation of animation and just how much goes into it. I love how fun and easy to follow it is. It also explains why animation just costs SO MUCH to make
the main reason people dont make this public is for immersion (exceptionally for little kids) but by golly holy shit did i not except a well of information from the penguins from Madagascar
Animation is such an amazing medium! And the people behind it are some of the most talented in the world. Not to mention, they have the kind of patience that an artist like myself can only DREAM of! Kudos to them!
Working in a creative field (not movies, vidya games), I already knew half of this stuff. However, it always makes me happy when companies do things like this. These kinds of things can only deepen the audience appreciation for the sheer volume of work that goes into making one of these things.
i'd say lighting/texturing is the most important part because its the most detailed and time consuming part and its pretty much what defines how realistic the animation is.
This is a great explanation of the general layout of animation. I have done a very small amount of simple amateur animation I can understand how incredibly complicated the production of a animated movie can be. The different parts of the animations are created by amazingly talented groups of people.
to recommend u good educational content. So u have a choice to watch, I loved this, I learnt so much more than what college taught me in an entire year. Thanks Dreamworks
I'm a simple gal: I see penguin-centric educational animation, I click. The peeps that made "Happy Feet" could have done a similar video and I would have watched, because penguins! LOL!
So the guys in the editorial departement put togeter all sketches and put some sound over the sequence. It would be really cool if these "early movies" would be included in the bluray versions of the movies. That would truly be amazing :D
I think they should do a newer one to help visualize the new style that animation is taking. (Spider verse, puss in boots 2, Mitchell's vs. The machines type of style)
Get a couple scripts and UVing goes by incredibly fast. I have one called im_uvMaster and you can quickly project and unfold UVs once you cut them; takes away 90% of the manual arranging and such.
More than talent are they work, you dont need talent just practice every day. Even if someone have some talent and dont work in it , it will be a waste. Behind all that "talent" are hours of work and practice. Everyone can do it, all you just need its to practice. And with the time you can even discover more ways to perfect your work.
That moment when you realise that even making this animation took quite a while and went through the exact same pipeline it's explaining.

Ella Jameson He doesn't render, DreamWorks' server farm does.
What you describe looks more like working for Pixar…Plus, they never addressed rendering in this thing.
