Installed hand controls are the safest and easiest and most comfortable to use. I got SCI in 1981 and got my first vehicle in 1982 a Pontiac Gran Prix after I checked myself out of rehab. I have been using MPS Monarch right angle hand controls ever since in 5 vehicles 4 new and 1 used. They are the gold standard of hand controls.
Robb!!! I am so happy for you!! Driving had become such a chore for me and my doctor got me a similar set of portable breaks bc she didn’t want me to lose my independence again. I can now enjoy driving again and when I get out of the car my legs aren’t exhausted!!! I am truly happy for you Rob!!!! I’m smiling hard over here for you!!!!
Thanks so much! You were the inspiration behind me getting them! I was thinking and looking and Kelly said, "Meloney just got them." That was my sign! I am so relaxed behind the wheel again and enjoy driving again. It was so stressful before. Be well and strong!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻
Best demo I found for these. Recently found myself in need of hand controls been driving for a LONG time worried I couldn't get used to using hand controls. One thing I learned quickly its easy to push both the gas and brake simultaneously-DON'T DO THAT! lol. I installed mine today and drove around block a a few times. not difficult. Thanks Rob.
Really glad you were able to get use of those. I'm actually getting a lot of use from your video because I also have ms and it's gotten really dangerous to drive anymore. Thank you
I will be taking my written test next week and have looked into this brand of hand controls to use. They look like a good brand to learn to drive in. I am unable to drive with my feet as I have trouble walking, so I am planning on ordering this brand once I get my permit. Thank you for this video.
Good luck! I think you will really like using them. Sadly I do not drive anymore but those times I was able to use them gave me such a feeling of freedom.
That's awesome. One less thing to stress about. Driving is a great way to unwind. Well, I guess that depends on where you are driving but you know what I mean! Open road, music, your own thoughts. Shouldn't have to worry about your safety.
Thanks for showing me a possibility in my near future mate. 3 months ago I was in a pushbike/car accident and I've lost control of my right leg. This could be the answer. Take care and Happy New Year to you and your families.
This is an absolutely amazing product and amazing solution for those of us that would have problems driving. Honestly, it was so amazing to use. You’re going to really enjoy it. Good luck to you, my friend! Happy new year to you and your family!
Also, if you have cruise control in your car, when I’m straight roads where you don’t have to stop, I use it and it frees up my right hand until I have to break. :)
I just opened mine up today but according to the instructions there is supposed to be some type of pins in there to set the length of the sticks but I don't see it did yours come with that or was there some other procedure you had to follow to set them up correctly
Ahhh, that's how they work. I'm a T3 paraplegic and I have a bolt in set of hand controls in my truck but that is the only vehicle I can drive. Being able to drive other vehicles would be a huge convenience.
Thanks for your comment; I have noticed my stiff ankle wasn't too much of an issue until my son took over my 1/2 ton pick up. Then driving my mercury marquis was a bit difficult. So either I go back to a sit up position in a truck or try out the hand controls, Thanks for posting
I had a question, I was trying to use the signal with the QuicStic and it wasn't working for me. Does anybody have any ideas on other ways to signal? Has there been anything anyone rigged up to help them signal? Anyway, thank you for the video, it was very helpful.
Yes. It fit my Crosstrek’s pedal with no problem. By the looks of the design it seems to be universal. I attached it up from the bottom and then tightened down the clamps real well. It never budged once attached.
@@LifewithRobBrazius Thanks for the reply! It's good to know that it fits on the Crosstrek, I was wanting to test drive one of those. My Forester has a bulky plastic piece on the back of the gas pedal (not sure if that is typical on all Subarus), so I was just curious. I just saw that QuickStick offers an adapter clamp as well so I am going to get that just in case. I am looking forward to trying these out!
Search QuicStick hand controls. The website will come up. There is also a link to purchase it on Amazon in the video description box. Thanks for watching!
How does it feel still? I woke up partially paralyzed and have foot drop with my right foot and was looking into this. I drive with my dogs (my only family) and I want them to be safe.
I am so sorry I missed your comment. I felt very safe using them. It was such a feeling of freedom t be able to drive comfortably and feel safe. Unfortunately I no longer drive since my condition has worsened in the last 2 years.
It wasn't difficult at all. I guess that would depend on your pain level and condition of your hand. So sorry I missed this comment. Did you wind up buying them?
@@LifewithRobBrazius Yes I bought them and nearly crashed my Jeep right out of the driveway. LOL It would have taken me a while of practice on a lot before I would have been able to drive with the hand controls. Just too much muscle memory and arthritic hands and wrists. I have now given up on driving and sold the Jeep. I will do fine..... no worries.
ok i just tried mine for the first time. I think i prefer the peddlemaster. I let the quickstick rest in my lap to answer the phone and somehow it pushed the accelerator. good thing the car was in park. so it seems if you ever need to put the handle down it can be dangerous? Good Luck and thanks for the video.
@ nublackmusic how is the peddle master working for you? There ain’t much reviews or videos on them, I was thinking of getting those, much easier and faster to install I assume
@@JB-ym6tc I finally figured out the quick sticks. the trick is that it can not be in your lap. it must be installed to be on your right or left side. If you put it in your lap and you hit the brake it will sometimes accelerate . this should be stated in their instructions or on their website. the peddle master are easier to put on but if you have a vehicle with a cramped driver position the peddle master can also run the risk of both accelerator and brake being pushed. i hope to make a video on it soon. Peace!
At first, I would check it every time I drove but then once I got confidence about it I would check it every week. Never needed to be adjusted once the initial installation was done. I always checked anyway.
@@LifewithRobBrazius Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm glad to know that they stay secure. Now I just have to find out if my state's DMV requires drivers using hand controls to obtain special certificates on their driver licenses.
@@ThePoppie225 Anytime!! Definitely check with your insurance company! In NY my ins said nothing is needed. I found that rare for such an "interesting" place as NY. A lot of times, people at the DMV know next to nothing. Ins always has the answers. And my money! lol
Why do shops charge an arm and a leg for hand controls? Most disabled people are on social security which means they have a very small income. It's frustrating. Also, can this be used as a permanent fix? I'm permanently disabled and I need something durable and long term.
I didn’t get to use these for a real long time because my disability progressed and now I don’t get behind the wheel anymore. From what I saw from the materials, the design and the workmanship: these are heavy duty and will withstand the test of time.
@@cmokon I recommend you contact the manufacturer for these questions as I don't use cruise control while driving. I do short drives locally. I want you to be able to use it confidently and safely. So sorry I don't have the answer for you.
