This line forces people to have the philosophical discussion about taking risks vs. playing it safe. Personally, I appreciate a group that pushes themselves more than a group that plays college drumline beats for 85% of the show.
@@agedoutpodcast for real! Even on the lower end it’s cool seeing low scoring lines doing so well. I swear the pandemic gave everyone too much free time and now everyone individually is so much better than before lmao
agreed! i wonder if it's at all a function of shows starting later this year? to my knowledge spring training(s) started at the same time as usual for groups, but it's like everyone's had an extra week in the oven? i dunno. but it's dope.
In my opinion, I feel the Cavies are playing it safe. BAC, is like, I don't give a flying "Bleep". Their degree of difficulty is ridiculous. That long tenor roll to intro the "On the Waterfront". Good GOD!!!
@@mrpiklez3703 i was also in san antonio and just didn’t hear it. bloo had the best drumline at san antonio, but i think boston will win that title. however, bloos pit is insane, i think that award is going to them two years in a row.
@mrpiklez3703 at the end of the day, it's music. Any book where the best thing you can say about it is "they have uncomfortable space" doesn't deserve to win
They were piss clean on the field too, those pearl snares sounded so much better compared to all the others that night, in my opinion you could hear them through the horns a lot better than the other corps I heard at SA.
One thing I discovered about a year ago when my new favorite stick after my former fav. (Tom Aungst stick) became the Colin McNutt stick, was that this stick "speaks" as clearly at 3 inches as it does at 9 or 12. I'm curious if this helps Colin's lines take advantage of playing low fast rolls and other low dynamics and what your all's take on this is; not saying that as some sorta sponsor or anything LOL. Just something I noticed that compared to the other sticks in my collection, that stands out to me. I have other reasons why it's my new favorite stick, but that is one among a few of them when it comes to the McNutt stick. Saw the Cadets reaction; those clear scoops are looking NICE!
4:28 those are 2-4's, RrLlll, so a 6 note grouping, but very close, and still has the challenging 4's in there like y'all said. They feel really good coming out of a check roll and sets up your hearing, kinda like how they did here
Let’s not forget that field percussion execution is less than 50% of the equation in winning the percussion caption, a caption which ironically does not have judging representation out on the field anymore. So while this battery is no doubt next level and may be the best out there, it just means that they are only the best slice of a larger pie.
Yea I’d say the batteries are only truly sample for 15% or less of the show. Which is sadly ironic, given the trophy is the shape of a snare drum and named after a guy who revolutionized marching drumline. -Evan
@@agedoutpodcast Haha. I’m not joking when I say this- there should be an unofficial award for winning the lot (kind of like the Spirit Of Disney award).
General consensus on cavs is their book is piss easy barring their features, but they play it so damn well it almost doesn’t matter. Doesn’t really explain how they got highest content score, but at this point I have NO idea what’s goin on in judges minds right now.
@@gronchosko7741it's bullshit. I understand not having crazy battery stuff ALL the time, but I'm pretty sure any top indoor scholastic group could learn their book in probably 2 weeks time, MAX. Their "easy" stuff is inexcusably easy and it's not like it just fits perfectly with the show music either.
@@DeeboComing some people have said they’re playing it safe, but in my opinion it’s to a ridiculous degree, to the point where it’s straight up boring to watch the majority of the time. People make excuses that their pit is absolutely insane and that’s a big part of percussion score, but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about the idea of them winning Sanford.
I really wish we could see the judge sheets for content. Do they factor in something like "if it's too hard for them to play clean, the content isn't as appropriate at this point in time and hence will get a lower score"? Is it completely subjective? I don't see how BAC, BC, or BD have lower content scores than Cavies otherwise.
Listened to this while making breakfast Their roll heights were lower than my butter knife on toast. I dont know how they get everyone to play that low with quality
I love Cavies this year and they definitely give me those old school early 2000s vibes but BAC this year (and last year) said f*** it to no onfield judges we are going to play great all the time (and the pit is better and more exposed this year)
Evan marched Crown in 2009 and 2010 and I (Mike) marched Blue Stars in 2010 and Bluecoats in 2012. We’re both snare drummers. We both were also in Rhythm X for a few years.
I wish that we can see the parity in the all the corps in their entirety as we see in the percussion sections. I’m not hating on BD by any means. But, it seems as if it’s just a race for silver & bronze because BD winning gold is just a forgone conclusion. 🤷🏾♂️
Bass Drummer #2 Coats 07/08 Checkin in. Love the podcast guys. Bluecoats HANDS DOWN has the best battery and should win drums again. BC has the most difficult book with Cadets a close 2nd. Cadets achieves at a slightly higher level. Cavs is very simple but master the space and front to back game. I’ll be watching all those this Saturday in ATL with my 2 year old. Hope to run into y’all.
I don’t know if I would say “hands down”, at least not on the move. I do agree that their ceiling is one of the higher of all the groups. If they can achieve it more consistently, they’ll be right up there at the end.
Touché. Hands down in a game of centimeters separating the top lines. Def wish there was a field judge so we could hear their tapes on the move but since all we have is lot stuff…when I watch coats: I keep waiting for the minor inconsistencies (bad attacks, the first diddle on rolls/the first after the tap, the shots, blend issues, timing, etc) and they just don’t show up. I don’t mean to sound like a homer. Def not sleeping on BD either…I just need to come on the podcast at this point lol 😂
I see different groups have different types of difficulty going for them. In my opinion, BAC has the most difficult book in terms of pure chops from all sections, Bluecoats have the most difficult book from a rhythmic vocabulary with a book that explores more difficult dynamics, and BD has the most difficult book from sort of a blend of chops and rhythmic vocabulary point of view but with more environmental and listening risks. This is just for the battery though, and I can't comment on how the front ensemble of overall percussion packages appear to me. BAC seems to have the best tenor line I've heard in years though, maybe even on par or surpassing BD '11, SCV '16, and the writing seems to allow them to showcase that talent. I also think BD has the best tenor line they've had since the 09-12 era too and they also showcase them a lot. I don't see the same coming from Bluecoats this year. Their tenor line is great, but not pushing the limits or being asked to do much compared to the others. Maybe their technique or writing doesn't lend itself to doing crazy sweeps and crossovers. All their bass lines are awesome though, but I give BD the slight edge in that regard. I just hope whoever wins the Sanford actually has the best and cleanest battery to back that up.

THIS
Yes.
Agreed. Didn’t the ‘04 SCV tape make a mention of this concept as well?
I mean,,, not really since that material isn’t being evaluated by the perc. judge. If it ain’t evaluated, risk/reward don’t enter the equation.
So many good drum lines this year man

Colin has extremely high sound quality expectations and always has.
You have to play low and relaxed to play that fast.
Cleanest line with a high difficulty beafy book imo right now

On the Waterfront. It’s a movie with music by Leonard Berstein. The theme music has been used a lot. SCV 97 and Bluecoats 08 for sure.
I know this video is about the drums but I can’t help but notice that two dudes in the snare line look like grown ass men.
