i flew C-130s in the AF, on Christmas eve overseas one of our crews accidentally landed on the taxiway at a military base in Europe.
It was very foggy , and the tower asked if he had landed on the taxiway by mistake. The aircraft commander pulled his velcro wings off his flight suit and threw them on the center console in disgust and despair at himself, then replied “Yessir it appears we did” .
The tower controller replied , “ Merry Christmas , taxi to parking “. The incident didnt go any further.

Okay. I'm NOT a pilot. But with that said, how in the hell did the pilots of this flight mistaken a taxiway from a runway?!!! First of all, taxiways have a single solid yellow line in the center of them to enable and aid in keeping the aircraft centered during taxi. Secondly, runways are much wider than taxiways, and have white dotted lines as well as a bunch of solid lines together to indicate 1000 feet if I not mistaken? If I as a non-pilot know this, how in the hell did two pilots not notice they were on a taxiway?!!!

EWR has "full-length" taxiways that are very wide, away from the aprons, and seldom used in the middle of the night. So the the sight picture out of the window would have looked okay, no obstacles and a long "runway." Of course a half dozen items were skipped over in order to not notice they're on a taxi way...
Must have be fatigue/sickness AND complacency. No excuse for this. I was in a car on the freeway when I moved to Texas one light (sick from a cold and very tired) and got myself on a road with markings that didn't look familiar due to construction.. I knew my mental state was impaired so pulled over in a safe spot and double-checked where I was to make sure the road was even open and safe and that I wasn't in oncoming traffic. Turns out all was ok, but if I could take a precaution like that (in a car no less) if something didn't feel right, why couldn't these guys..
