Penney and seeing sensational Halston creations was just amazing! my mother loved his clothes also!. TRUE CLASSICS. Kimberly
There still exists the same danger of the designer being perceived as destroying the exclusivity of the brand. Michael Kors is another "cautionary tale." His brand has lost a lot of its value due to down-market sales. Being seen as the coolest person doing anything is something of a magic trick. Once the illusion is shattered, it's hard to ever regain the original allure. Selling to the masses can make you a lot of money, but you will never be seen as rare or special ever again. High-end fashion marketing requires a sense of exclusivity.
My first designer perfume from my 1st real paycheck at 17 year old in 1981. I still remember how it smells and how it made me feel when I wore it. I felt so beautiful.
Halston should be more celebrated than defined for his struggles. His designs are timeless and today look more minimalist, chic, and comfortable than today’s fashion.
She STILL doesn't speak badly of him and encourages interviewers to concentrate on his talents rather than more salacious details of his partying/sexuality.
I truly miss the simplicity and elegance of Halston's designs....and Ultrasuede. I did my senior menswear fashion project (I attended Pratt Institute from 73 to 77) in Ultrasuede. I wore the suit well into the 80s. I was also fortunate enough to secure a white Ultrasuede 'safari' jacket (that I'd wear with a navy blue silk shirt and navy blue raw silk trousers). Needless to say, you can't find that kind of elegance any more.
When Halston's death was announced on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Mr. Jennings was very sincere about it. He quoted Halston "You're only as good as the people you dress." Halston was worn by women who were in New York Society. I recently found out Debbie Reynold's purchased all the Halston gowns and caftans from The Elizabeth Taylor Estate auction. Halston is still relevant and his fashion is timeless.
ICONIC!!!! Funny how the choice to collaborate with JC Penney is today's equivalent of H&M, with high end brands signing up!!!!! (Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld, etc). I wondered for years why his clothing line had disappeared in exclusive stores like Saks Fifth Avenue & others. Well, this video told me why. I was the DJ/Audio man in Miami for Ken Downing for many years when he represented Neiman Marcus. I did many fashion shows for him. So Flamboyant and creative!
The snobs did not like that he made a deal with J C Penny's. He said he wanted to design for ALL women that's NOT a bad thing. The snobs can pick a finger.
First I’m hearing of him. The snubs were never his friend. I thought he did something horrible to find out his smart business and inclusive. I’ve never heard such foxy in all my life. Rest well Mr Halston
So in away Halston was thee First Designer to go into creating a affordable line, He Lead the way for Many other designer's to create affordable lines!
This was sad he was a genius and the only designer that can take a piece of simple fabric and drape it into a dress without having to use scissors he was incredible- sadly the bas decisions, the excess the drugs victor hugo and AIDS took him from us but many designers have been inspired by him so his legacy continues !
I met him and had a personal experience with him when he was still designing hats for Bergdof Goodman . He was a pretentious person and spoke with an artificial affectation of what he thought sounded upper class even then. Yes, he was a great designer but his personality and his life were a mess.
miltsar ~ I think we all knew, Halston's persona was a carefully crafted character, and over the top, but still, his image was a lot of fun and very glamorous. I always enjoyed him, well, at least as an onlooker. Was he unpleasant to deal with in person?
I first became aware of Halston as a designer while watching the film, "King Kong". When a water-soaked and unconscious Jessica Lang was fished out of a sinking yacht in mid-Pacific, it was noted that she must be a woman of quality as she was wearing a Halston gown.
Why do people constantly think they need to tell the negative side of people's personal life ? He was an amazing driven designer however like most creative individuals you are easily distracted by the dark side of life because without night there is no day. Without grey you will nevernow colors.Irs sad how many years later we still have to judge his mistakes praise his vision ,his artistic ability, his stamp.on fashion and the many orginal looks people still copy today. This was a hard time for homosexuals dealing with societies views not just on gay men but also the AIDS crisis.
Because negating the negative, tends to project a sense of superior entitlement; worthy of disregarding criticism. To get the full picture, you can’t sensor the unfavorable decisions of whom you are idolizing. All colors of the painting are present, flaws and perfections. The listener can draw their own conclusions from there. Otherwise, key details get overlooked and forgotten. Such as, Henry Ford was the inspiration for Germanys atrocities in the mid-30’s. The German chancellor - whose name is censored on YT - was a major supporter of Henry Ford’s antisemitism. He once sent Henry Ford a letter stating “I will make you so proud” shortly before Germanys invasion of Poland. So, in a sense, had Henry Ford not been so racist, or purchased a Detroit newspaper for the sole purpose of spreading antisemite rhetoric, which was based off fabricated “alternative facts”, WWII would have looked very, very different. Also, I know the plight of a gay man. I am one. I grew up in Dallas, TX. I know struggle of trying to overcome public opinion on the stereotype and most recently, political attacks based on religious fanaticism. Now that you have learned more of my background, this provides a well timed example to my point: You are able to make a more informed analysis of my character and perspective, when shared more details. “I’d rather have more information accessible to me, rather than less.” - and I learned that, from growing up in Texas; the book-ban capital of the U.S.
The piece seeks to explain what happened to someone who should have continued at the top of his industry, is all. If his partner had been straight and he also and was encouraging him to do drugs, it would still be relevant from the perspective taken. Also, it worth recalling that there was a time when HIV was a near death sentence. Indeed, in the society he kept, being gay was almost the norm. Why do people always want to be perceived as victims? Even grown adults?
Its called a "biography." That's like do a piece on Einstein on all of his inventions...without mentioning all of the times that failed. And, its also a warning...It's always OK to have fun....but not to much fun.
Well written and facts. I feel sorry for you being gay. In America. I don’t think you will ever feel safe. The laws keep changing depending on who is elected. Gay here in Canada is lucky. Be safe
Didn't know about the Netflix docudrama but I'm sure they had the good taste to leave out the Dune's drug filled summer orgies as well as Halston's predisposition for well-endowed black men. When I met him in 1980, I found him to be reserved while pleasant and generously answered the eager questions of a 20 year old fashion student. Still wear his Z-14
People like their boundaries between them and those. I strongly believe in that. He should've never sold his company to Norton Simon, instead Halston should've let them invest in it, and the deal with JC Penny shouldn't have happened. Just for the record, the Netflix series was based on an unauthorized book that came out a year after he died. I speak with his niece quite often who owns his archives. The family wasn't at all contacted for it.
I was in my 20s when Halston was hanging out at Studio 54. Margaux Hemingway was in his coterie; they both seemed to be the pinnacle of glamor. Little did we know of the dark side of their lives until later, when his cocaine use became an open secret. The downfall from Halson’s drug addiction and Hemmingway’s suicide were both heartbreaking.
Back then, I guess Halston didn't think about maintaining the high glamour part while also starting a subsidiary affordable line with a different label like "Roy" or "R. F." for Roy Frowick, or "RHF" for Roy Halston Frowick, or something unrelated to his name or whatever, under a new parent company. I don't know.
I think Halston was a genius. His designs are timeless and exciting. Whenever I see pictures of his work I want to dress-up. His perfume is still my favorite.

As a fashion designer, specializing in ultra high end fashion, I understand the clients' complaints and mutiny 😅 It's like that. Look at fashion today: 2024& people wear yeezys/sweatpants as fashion; and females pretty much walk around looking like carbon copies of other females ... The industry doesn't put out clothing that speaks of good taste and it's the norm/standard now. ....
Most of us had black & white TVs back then. Both the hat and the coat were a light blue with gray undertones, there are many color photos online and newspaper accounts that describe it. The dark brown mink fur collar of the coat coordinated with her mink muff.
Michael Kors can't ever be compared to this: Gentleman of elegance, talent, and vision who shaped and defined an era in fashion history. I was a preteen in late 70s. I remember how this man's influence changed fashion. I in the 80s l wore his perfume. MAGNIFICENT ❤
Some flames rise up quickly, then become blasts of light, then sadly burn out more rapidly than they rose. But they were still once there. And they created a legacy. 🙂

I hate to admit this, but it did ruin his brand by partnering up with Penny’s which sucks bc he was a brilliant designer. I was born in 72 & sheesh I had forgotten all about Halston.
There were still real designers in those days, unfettered by big business. Halston's creations were a revelation. A radical departure. Corporations are quite incapable of art. The bottom line is all, and they can unintentionally destroy what the brand is even before it's born. And often after, as well. But it happens. I rememember running into a few bastardized examples with Designer labels at a thrift, who had been bought out. Their namesakes would have wept. It was truely THAT bad. Today the brand name is everything, and the corporation is smart enough to install another designer who has his own vision. Sometimes this is sucessful, and creates an entirely new look, BUT under the same brand name. Sometimes it is not, and a reshuffling occurs, usually quickly. Fashion changes. It is fleeting. One can't simply churn out the same thing year after year. It has to evolve. When the heart is gone, a new heart must beat in it's place. But calling it the same brand name, no longer has the same stigma. People buy the brand. In the days of Couture, fashionistas were loyal to the person. In the 70's and 80's, that still lingered. Halston is legendary not just for his clothes, but his image. And isn't image what fashion is all about ??? Sadly, in these complicated days, it is no longer possible to launch even a high end line without A LOT of outside money. Which means early loss of control. And the "vision" will always suffer, because of that. L'Wren Scott did, briefly before Jagger pulled the plug financially. Neither her line, nor her survived. She made truely exquisite things, but i heard faied to turn a profit. Turns out not even a boyfriend will tolerate that for long .. Couture, hand made, is mostly dead. Often only for obcenely expensive weddings. Labor costs are prohibitive, even at this exhorbitant price point. While even those like Laurent worked for others, initially, creating your very own house, like Channel, or Dior, or even Laurent, is no longer possible. It is a very costly business, and most fail early, failing to turn a profit. The business can be a real heartbreaker, for young talent. Most, if they're lucky, end up buried in an established House, hoping to rise from there. Few do. Tiny local companies may succeed in a tiny way. Even National is impossible,. without serious connections in every stage of the industry.. from advertising, manufacturing to shipping, always critical in a time sensitive seasonal business, they remain, if they're lucky, small and local. Or fail. So yeah, the days of people like Halston, are gone. And the world, i think, is poorer for it.
Ewan McGregor did a great job portraying him. ❤❤ I feel sympathy for him because he lost his identity; however, I believe Victor played a significant role in his downfall. It seems Halston was more interested in him than he was in Halston, and Victor acted as an opportunist, seeking fame.
😆W- Pause the video @ 10:44 - There's gotta be 1kg of blow on that tray, lol. If you look even further..(on the tray that's next to a girl who looks like Christy T*rlingt*n's twin sister)...there's a full vial of blow next to her Judith Leiber handbag
No doubt he and his friends took a lot of drugs but I think some of those images are from the recent movie about Halston and not real pics from a night at Studio 54
I would love to be able to dive into all of Halstons designs and ideas, I still feel he had a lot to offer us, but as his health wanned and the lack of strong commitment from his colleagues this did not happen .
I have watched docs showing as his career was tanking he became rude and controlling with his staff. Everyone had to wear black and he spoke to them deplorably but they still loved him.
The wedding wedding with J C Penney, for Halston was a disaster because he was too ahead of his time. In fact, 21 years after that doomed deal, Karl Lagerfeld, the Chief Designer of the super-elitist houses of Chanel and Fendi, got an incredible success with his collection for H&M. It happened in 2004 and, I said it again, just 21 years after Halston's direction! Maybe the problem wasn't so much the democratization perspective of his Brand & Name: Karl put his name on a fast fashion collection just for ONCE, and that sounded exclusive enough to sold every single item within 3 days, meanwhile H sold out his name for a lot of money but loosing every decision power: This is why it was an utterly failure, since he didn't want to retire. Yes, we saw the sell of names of major designers again and again, especially at the beginning of the 2000s: Margiela, Demeulenmeister, Lacroix, Viktor & Rolf and many others, who immediately retired after selling their own names and enjoyed a private life since then. Exceptions were Galliano, Gaultier, Mugler and Jil Sander....
PS, I forgot to point out: He was Really a Great Designer, and nobody interested in real high fashion history, is allowed to forget. His only weak points were drugs, business acumen and awful friends!
I STILL have and wear my Halston black wool jersey cape, black crepe dress and hats- they are timeless!

I thought I was mistaken when I was recollecting purchasing one of his perfumes way back when I could still fit into one of those gowns.
I guess one would need to dig a bit deeper to know what his own influences were; Eyptian, Middle Eastern, Arabian nights?
Still love Halstons fragrance... classic, romantic,.timeless
I still wear it… I love it! There’s no other scent like it!

Such utter snobbery from those that shunned him!!! His designs still exist to this day
The elite brats broke him.
Halston...Gucci...Fiorucci.
I love the jumper in still today
Ewan McGregor did a great job portraying him. ❤❤
I feel sympathy for him because he lost his identity; however, I believe Victor played a significant role in his downfall. It seems Halston was more interested in him than he was in Halston, and Victor acted as an opportunist, seeking fame.
Goodness, he was so over the top! I suppose he cultivated his marketing persona.
He was very talented and successful! He died too young, what a pity! 😢 was soo good looking OMG ❤
Does anybody know why that rectangle with rounded corners kept appearing on the left quarter line of the video?
wow, I never knew any of his downfall
🤔- I'm puzzled. Did you think his brand stopped with death? (Or did you think he's "just been a bit quiet recently") 🤣🤣
Chics lyrics from he's the greatest dancer mentions Halsten ❤
😆W- Pause the video @ 10:44 - There's gotta be 1kg of blow on that tray, lol. If you look even further..(on the tray that's next to a girl who looks like Christy T*rlingt*n's twin sister)...there's a full vial of blow next to her Judith Leiber handbag
No doubt he and his friends took a lot of drugs but I think some of those images are from the recent movie about Halston and not real pics from a night at Studio 54
I'm not surprised, at all.
Hugo was an escort that Halston was infatuated with. Hugo an artist- LOL.
A nobody hustler.
He has horrible breath.
No doubt from eating
Seeing him driving his Rolls Royce convertible on main street of Long Island's West Hampton & thinking that was odd, is he lost?
I love his J C Penney clothes!
Ive been to Des Moines. What part of the city did his accent come from ?
I think that Halston with smoking and drugs like cocaine that made HIV worse. Sad.
You are really out there. I guess it takes all kinds.....?
🎉🎉halston, Bill Blass & Liz clairborne were the best¡
The music is very distracting.
Unless Tom Ford takes over at Halston it will remain irrelevant.
Good video. Hard to watch with all the flashing lights on it.
He certainly does have a very pretentious accent that he affects. I am pretty sure that's not what people from Des Moines sound like!
he wanted to distance himself from his past ot seems, nothing wrong with his accent
@@seliamila1005😂
@@seliamila1005it was a lie. Like Tom ford. Tom ford has an over exaggerated speaking voice. Tom is a fraud.
I would love to be able to dive into all of Halstons designs and ideas, I still feel he had a lot to offer us, but as his health wanned and the lack of strong commitment from his colleagues this did not happen .
Well done doc. Get rid of the annoying music however.
I have watched docs showing as his career was tanking he became rude and controlling with his staff. Everyone had to wear black and he spoke to them deplorably but they still loved him.
He was such a classy and creative designer, yet he lived such a raunchy life.
Fabulous designer RIP
Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci-
He looks like a still, that man is dressed to kill- I went wild- He's the greatest dancer...
I have Halston men's cologne and it's good.
When he sold his name … he sold his soul. The drugs and Victor negatively impacted his life.
Victor 'negatively impacted' Warhol's gay porn 'oevre' too!
Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci 🎶🎶🎶🎶
I always thought selling his name was his downfall but obviously lifestyle contributed
I through they was trying to bring back his design and his fashion house as well. So what happened?
