The “Ludicrously Capacious Bag” scene in Succession was the final nail in the coffin for Burberry. It sent a strong message to the viewers that it’s a brand for the unrefined and uncouth peasants.

Young, trend driven customers don't buy expensive luxury garments. Of course they buy cheap and replace their clothing often. It is a bad decision for a luxury brand to cater to this audience.
In my opinion Christopher Bailey is the best thing to ever happen to the brand. Under his direction they rose to be the hottest name in the early 2000s. I would say the downfall began with the appointment of Riccardo Tisci, who completely obscured and obliterated the brand’s heritage. Daniel Lee should have kept the brand in its own lane where it was still attainable luxury. The very public ridicule they endured on Succession didn't help either. Personally I think they need to focus on timeless style. Not try to cater both to luxury and common markets. Maybe I just speak for myself but I like clothes and architecture that can be elegant in any time period. There’s a reason why people like noir style to this day.

Burberry under Bailey was amazing! Lee should leverage more of those classic British silhouettes and forget any nod to streetwear. The prices have gotten too pricey too. Burberry should sit above Reiss, but never in line with Tom Ford.

Apart from the designer hickups after C Bailey, Burberry leadership got blinded by greed during their expansion into the far eastern - and particularly the Chinese- markets. Prices went up unreasonably while quality went down leaving behind much of their traditional clientele, the bulk of which were in fact aspirational buyers. Yes, somebody ultra wealthy can enter a store and essentially buy up half of what’s in there, but they don’t call them the 1% for nothing. I’ve just bought a vintage 90’s Burberry polo shirt with a little embroidered sailing ship motif for £23,the cheapest polo on their UK website is £450 🥶
The first time I went to a Burberry store was in 2013 in Toronto. I still remember there’s a guy next to me was super annoyed and disappointed at the brand because he was in the store to return a poorly made leather belt. It fell apart on the first day. He even showed the Versace belt to the sales person he’s been wearing for a few years still in perfect condition.

Burberry failing is a testimony to bad business consulting rampant in late stage capitalism; heritage is KING / its all that should be referenced while designing for the modern day
It’s a failure to test and resonate with their consumer. Burberry has been overrun with Creative mindsets that have had more of a “build it and they will come approach” than truly learning what their consumer is looking to buy and how they use it. Creating artistic designs for the sake of art does not translate to needs of a consumer. The clothes shouldn’t wear a consumer… it’s the other way around.

I looked into my local Burberry - they had a heavily branded (too much) plastic ski jacket for £700, made in Vietnam. The Filipina sales assistant was completely clueless about the brand history or the composition of any of the products. I would like to blame management for lack of training, but she thought London was in Spain. How can such people interact with their customers? I made my excuses and left!
It's not just Burberry that's in trouble, I think. Many luxury brands have been making wrong moves for ages! They must go back to the times when design and quality came first and business (money, money, money) came second. Designers deserve respect and time to create and buyers deserve lessons in what's worth. Luxury brands are not meant to compete in the trend market; their spirit is just the opposite. I've always been inspired by Burberry's classic Brit cool elegance. I've had some Zara trousers that replicate the iconic pattern for over twenty years and I'll wear them proudly whatever happens to the brand, probably one of the few ones I'd be happy to pay for if I could afford it. I hope Burberry finds its voice again. No doubt it's a British treasure.
I bought my Burberry and scarf in the 80s and I still wear both. I really hope Lee and Shulman can save such a British brand. Otherwise it will all end dramatically like Biba. The UK has an identity crisis overall and still doesn’t know where it is in the world. How it will work out who knows.🍓
I would change everything about the brand including its former logo. It's not about going back to its roots. Everything new and exciting is in front of you. The vision is within forward motion, creating textiles and designs which are exclusive, exciting and 'illusive' as in the formation of a desireable unicorn that maintains unattainability to the common person.
Burberry faces challenges due to overexpansion, excessive unsold merchandise, and a misperception as a low-end brand compared to Tory Burch or Coach in Western markets. Altering public perception is challenging when products have been discounted for over a decade.
Why was there no discussion of the period that Angela Ahrendts was their CEO just before Mr. Bailey was promoted to both CEO & chief designer? She went on to Apple running retail but left after five years.
I stopped shopping with them when they stopped being a classic brand which offered highest quality products made of highest quality fabrics and when they became a brand which offers messy designs and cheap fabrics.
I still sometimes wear my trenchcoat, but I feel the brand has gone downhill with gaudy products like dog jackets, and flashy polo’s and baseball caps worn by every other chav.
Burberry needs to do what Armani or Ralph Lauren had done for decades. Although Burberry had diffusion lines, but like the company itself it lacks focus of what each diffusion line really does. Each line bleeds into each other so its target customers is confused as they are. They need to bring back the Prorsum line as what Christopher Bailey had done to set a "ceiling" for its brand, ie "Giorgio Armani" . Then a normal line which is more accessible to the wider consumer, i.e Emporio Armani. And a youth line, i.e Armani Exchange. Without these diffusion lines, the brand can not thrive as it can't serve every single target segments. You can't have an image of luxury, while it's assessible, it will not work!
Burberry as an employer has rarely been a "win/win". Even decades ago, display professionals were paid the minimum- no liveable wages there even for DC, USA.
They went from high-quality, rebel aristocracy looks to generic "streetwear" styles. They also produced too many cheaper lines, which diluted their halo line status.
This whole business model of syndicated luxury doesn't make any sense: The goods are supposed to perform like commodities financially while desperately trying to project an image of custom or almost bespoke items. Any company spending millions-or billions-flogging the "brand" is definitely economizing somewhere else. It's almost always in the construction of the product.
Boots trench coats scarfs and definitely not the awful bag designs. Focus on rain boots and rain wear with elegance. Keep to the core items and timeless pieces.
Even if Burberry falls, they still have great perfumes etc. It’s enough to begin to rebuild on if it gets to that point but in recent years every fashion house has had problems because of the pandemic so it’s not a surprise.
I am still upset about them discontinuing My Burberry Black perfume. It was wonderful. They need to bring that perfume back and their unique design pattern ❤👡🖤🐑
I went looking for a Burberry trench and found the sleeves won’t allow you to wear a sweater! And the quality is not what it was. Very disappointing and the price is to high!
I heard they had always seen as average in London. I do like them still. I like the thigh high boots with the check pattern and the skirts too. As far as people they show have 2 types of burberry. Like Armani and exchange.
The core consumers are what made these companies into what they are today. By going into the aspirational route you take away the repeated shoppers and take in the once a year shoppers (aspirational consumers) Burberry experienced this decline in the late 1990s but instead of going back to its roots they decided to continue digging the hole. The client that shops at Hermes or Channel isn’t looking for a flashy piece they are looking for a fashion forward timeless addition to their wardrobe with top quality and craftsmanship. What Burberry has been doing since the beginning of this century with producing a lot of their cloths in Asia has really weakened their stance as a quality brand. I know they still make some clothes in UK/England but it’s far between.
I really love your taste and style always so chic. My faves would be the MOMCOCO leather backpack and the Swarovski pave diamond ring so gorg. Thank you for your recommendations.
every designer brands are made cheap now, or most of them. It's like European cars, they're all made to work well between 30K to 45K miles, then they breakdown, but by then we would want to move onto a new car. Same with designer brands. And people will keep buying them. It's genius.
1st step to death was branding its main source of income (man on the street) as not being the type of customer they wanted. second step was Tisci and the hideousness of that collection. Then they managed to make the single ugliest website of any designer brand. nope.
By jacking up prices and lowering quality and full range of senseless designs is the main reason for the fall. They took advantage of the rise of the middle class . Went full throttle with thoughtless design and Logos and sacrificed quality all the way to cash in on profits . This is what happens when you get greedy and lazy at the same time . The refined consumers always know 😅
I have one kislux bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
Burberry meant quiet, understated elegance. The quality was superb. Once I see an entire family of hood rappers decked out from head to toe, including their kids, I will never wear it again. For conservative tastes, we don’t identify with this culture and I will consider the brand obsolete!
They are too greedy to earn money from the middle class, not only the rich people. That’s why these brands are not so luxurious anymore. They deserve it.
Burberry died when it stopped being a craft house 30 years ago. Asian sweatshop made clothing; coupled with vulgar fashion worn wrongly by the working classes. Greed kills brands eventually; think Gucci too.

Bought a burberry shirt in the late 90s for about €120. Same shirt ive seen a few days ago for €670.
Great video
Classic never go from style. ❤
I stopped shopping with them when they stopped being a classic brand which offered highest quality products made of highest quality fabrics and when they became a brand which offers messy designs and cheap fabrics.
Burberry is a classic icon in Luxury Brands
I never liked the trendy Burberry. I always appreciated the classic Burberry .
The Tisci hiring/era was a total disaster. It's like he didn't know where he was working
One of my favourite brands.
Boots trench coats scarfs and definitely not the awful bag designs.
Focus on rain boots and rain wear with elegance.
Keep to the core items and timeless pieces.
Bailey played to the strengths / heritage
Even if Burberry falls, they still have great perfumes etc. It’s enough to begin to rebuild on if it gets to that point but in recent years every fashion house has had problems because of the pandemic so it’s not a surprise.
The perfumes are great until you compare them to Jo Malone or Byredo
The best thing I think burberry has is perfume.... But thats just me??!!
Yes, I think it's just you.
I think the perfumes are the most affordable thing they have to offer and I have some but that’s the only Burberry thing I own.
My Burberry Black perfume is wonderful but it is hard to find now.
Then they managed to make the single ugliest website of any designer brand. nope.
Burberry scarves now selling at Costco… Reminds me of the fall of Coach…
To start with those zombie models are a real turn off . I had an original trench coat bought back in the 80s and stood the test of time .
Burberry's collections for decades have been grossly overpriced for the quality. The brand went too far from its "roots," without a doubt.
The refined consumers always know 😅
Deeply entrenched classism in the UK killed Burberry.
Classicism MADE Burberry
Burberry just lost its way. It's easier to keep core customers than reinvent the wheel and cheapen the name by marketing to the "street" and outlets.
I have one kislux bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...
Simple : too expensive for what it is...like a lot of luxuries brands
Dont blame Rappers 😂
Burberry meant quiet, understated elegance. The quality was superb. Once I see an entire family of hood rappers decked out from head to toe, including their kids, I will never wear it again. For conservative tastes, we don’t identify with this culture and I will consider the brand obsolete!
Horrible desings and way over priced
They are too greedy to earn money from the middle class, not only the rich people. That’s why these brands are not so luxurious anymore. They deserve it.
It didn't help that Chavs adopted it, nor that it was so widely faked. I liked Burberry's in the '80s - & I hope it can get back to that elegance.
Burberry now looks like "SHEIN". Even SHEIN looks more luxurious.
The quality is crap
They increased the price far too much. I feel played, so I haven't bought anything Burberry for years. I'd rather buy another brand.
Burberry died when it stopped being a craft house 30 years ago. Asian sweatshop made clothing; coupled with vulgar fashion worn wrongly by the working classes. Greed kills brands eventually; think Gucci too.
This is what happens when you plaster your frickin name all over everything
