I've always thought that would have been the perfect plot twist to end the series. Imagine that in Severus's memories we see how he and Lily really reconciled somehow, how they had an affair for a few months, how James found out but understood that they both really loved each other and decided to do nothing (proving that he really changed and became a better man). As Severus however passed the prophecy on to Voldemort to prevent Voldemort from suspecting his already dubious loyalties at that point, the rest was the same until the moment he received the news of Lily's death (he didn't know Harry was his). Then when Harry's first year arrives, Severus expects to see a copy of James, but is surprised to see that he doesn't really look like James, he looks like him. And from then on, absolutely everything would change.

I could see this. However, something more congruent to the storyline could be an "entanglement" between Narcissa and Severus. The Spinner's End chapter certainly seems to cry to read between the lines.

I like your theory, except that I think that Lily would've secretly gotten Harry tested in the Muggle world to know who the father was. She would never tell James, but would at least write a letter to Severus; unsent because she died before sending the owl. But, that's my only change. Maybe the letter is found years later, or held by Dumbledore?

I read an interesting fanfic about Snape being Harry's real father. It seems the Potters had trouble conceiving because of James low sperm count, and had to get a donor. Snape needed money to buy new robes for an appearance with Voldemort and saw an ad for sperm donors. He sells his sperm but then worried if it's used to create a child that will not be loved, and abused like him, so he puts a mild spell on it that it would be used by a couple would would love their child. Turns out it's the Potters and he never recognizes Harry as his.

  • @grayzkule

If Snape realized he was the father, he wouldn't have resented Harry for being the reason Lily died, he would've resented himself because he caused Lily to be in that position. Of course, Snape might be self centered enough where he would've blamed Harry anyways, even though it was his own fault

If you have a problem with the casting of his parents, then you have a problem with the casting of Snape, Lupin and Sirius; because they were all the same age. James and Lilly were 21 when they died. Which means Snape Lupin and Sirius were 34 in POA

@@reggiesimpson3584 hopefully if there is ever a remake they Adress this and cast actors the right approximate age. Also, whatever actor they hire to play Tom Riddle from the diary they should at the same time film the scenes from the Halfblood Prince memories at the same time. I always felt the reason Snape never married and had any kids was because besides pining for Lily long after her death, he like a lot of men who had a rough childhood growing up with abusive fathers felt he didn't have what it takes to be a good parent. That and the fact that he was a recluse made it harder for him to make a connection with anyone, yet alone find anyone he liked to go on dates.

Don't forget Sevrus' unrelenting bitterness Initially towards James, his ("Enemy Supreme.") Harry, because he was James' Son and the very embodiment of his cursed Father. And finally, yes, even though he Loves her, even in death, he bears a modicum of bitterness for Lilly herself for choosing James over him. Even though he was the foolish idiot who called her a "Mudblood" while in a fit of rage stoked up by James when Lilly defended him for the last time. Being an accomplished strategist both on and off the Quiddich pitch, James knew at this moment he had won Lilly, or at least turned her from Severus by exploiting his "Pure blood" bigotry causing him to show his "True colors" to Lilly at last. James knew Lilly would never, could never forgive such a base and vulgar insult. James knew or at least suspected, even hoped that Lilly would surely choose him now over Severus. It was at this realization that Severus would want revenge on James for this. That revenge came in the form of an interview between Cybil Trelawney and Albus Dumbledor when an actual fortune was told by Trelawney at The Three Broomsticks Tavern. Severus Snape did not realize just how badly that act of vengance would backfire, or what it would eventually cost him. When he reported it to Lord Voldimort.

Or he thought that "being a father automatically means you'll turn into an all-hating drunk/ect" like a lot of people that have gone through abuse and if you take a look at his job as not only a professor but also as head of the house, it's basically his responsibility to parent every Slytherin if their parents don't want to parent (like many irl student's parents say that it's the teacher's responsibility to turn kids into good people). I'd imagine he's terrified of going through the "I loved someone and then I made a mistake and they left me forever and died". Because at least from the books it looks like her leaving him to HIM came out of nowhere (like a wife leaving comes out of nowhere for many husbands) even though she had mentally checked out looooong before he even called her a mud blood.

As many others here, I believe Harry's life would be drastically different for one distinct reason: He wouldn't look like James. Let's assume it would be the same with Severus, that Harry would look exactly like him, but with Lily's eyes. As a baby, James and Lily probably wouldn't notice, because he'd be a baby with dark hair. But then he'd live with Petunia and grow older, grow to look exactly like -that horrible boy-, whom she hated even more than James. And she'd know Lily had an affair. Not sure how much that would change, since she's horrible to Harry already, but if Vernon learned of it, chances are he'd rub it in that Harry was the result of an affair, his mum "didn't even love his dad," and it would give him a whole different image of them. Then at Hogwarts, it would be obvious to everyone who knew Snape as a child. Harry would be that small, hook-nosed boy with hair that greases quickly, and look like child-Snape but with Lily's eyes. Snape is smart, he'll immediately understand. And in this case, he'll see Harry as a triumph: The one thing left behind by Lily Evans is proof that at this crucial point, she chose Severus over James. He is not Lily's child, but THEIR child, hia child, proof that she really had wanted him and has left a small human who was created in their shared passion, while betraying James. To him, proof that in the end, she chose to love him over James. Maybe, just maybe, he'd change his whole perspective about Harry, maybe even ask Dumbledore to raise him himself, as he IS the father. Dumbledore of course wouldn't agree because he needs to live with Lily's blood, which creates a whole different storyline. And Harry too would probably recognise Snape as his actual father, the one Petunia hated so much, and seek to know him.
On another note, this would change many other characters relationship to him, too. Sirius would HATE him. Not only does he look like old Snivelly, he'd be a testament that Lily cheated on his best friend and acted like he was his. Maybe Sirius would come to his senses later, that it's not Harry's fault (as Snape never did), but at first, he'd have intense impulsive dislike. Remus would probably be a bit better about it, but far more distant than he was with James son.
And then there is Voldemort. He would know at once that Harry Potter is the son of his former supporter who asked him not to kill Lily, and he'd know why. He'd know that Snape would not choose Voldi over Harry and he couldn't turn spy.
Furthermore, everyone would know. Harry Potter, the famous Harry Potter, is the result of Lily Potter being unfaithful to her husband.
Everything about Harry's life would be different as soon as he entered the world where people recognise Severus Snape.

One big factor not covered here is how much harry looked like James was constantly brought up. If he was Snape's kid then that would be very unlikely. So Snape would likely have been much friendlier because he wouldn't see James so much in harry. It would also have had some minor effect with lupin and serious as they wouldn't have had that base reaction either( they both spoke of feeling like they were back with James because he looked so much like Harry).

So did they really settle down and live at Grimmauld Place? Also where did Teddy Lupin live after his parents' death and how involved was Harry as his Godfather?

In private is something else. Severus would assign detentions for Harry. Only for the two to grow a relationship. Severus would drop hints about his past with Lily. The problem with "not a lot would have changed" is that obviously being Snape's and not James' biological son would've made Harry a 50% different person. He would've looked different, have a different character and different talents.
First of all, everyone comparing Harry to James and saying how much he looks like his father played a big part in Harry's development in his early teens. Now obviously Harry wouldn't visually resemble James anywhere near as much. It would have changed some things.
Harry's born quidditch talent wouldn't make any sense if it wasn't inheritted from James. He didn't have opportunities to build it up through practice.
What about his patronus being the same as James'? It wouldn't make a lot of sense as well.

Snape wouldn't have hated him since he wouldn't have looked like James, Harry likely wouldn't have nearly the same skill with flying and so he might never join the Quidditch team. Sirius and Remus would have a completely different relationship with him because he's not their friend's son, and even academic interests or strengths might change, since it seems everyone's magic is unique and better suited to different uses. It's not about the genetics necessarily changing everything about him, but rather the change in genes affecting minor things that cause a butterfly effect, which derails things the further you go.

While I love that sentiment, I feel compelled to point out both the gross mistreatment Harry suffered while under Snape's care, alongside the fact that Snape only protected Harry because Dumbledore forced him to take an unbreakable vow to do so in exchange for protecting Lily and James - something he didn't even fulfill on his end of the bargain. I think Snape grew to care about Harry, but only because he was being forced into becoming a martyr. Snape probably realized, having heard from Dumbledore that Harry must die, that he'd die young having lived a miserable life and felt remorse for having contributed to that misery. But I don't think he ever truly cared for Harry's physical or emotional wellbeing outside of fulfilling his vow.

This was a great video! But after watching it, I got to thinking. What if Snape used a glamour spell to disguise himself, and gifted Harry a magical diorama while he was living with the Durseley's? This diorama is a place where Harry could have learned potions as well as spells, both defensive and offensive, via a Snape hologram or "ghost visage" generated by the diorama. He could put his hand onto the diorama and be "transported" to the classrooms featured on the diorama. All while doing this without the knowledge of either the Ministry of Magic or Dumbledore. And he could have found a note Snape wrote him. Now THAT would be a interesting twist to the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as well as the rest of his education of magical knowledge. Just saying.

The only problem is this would've prevented the events of the whole saga, as it was prophesied that the child's parents were people who had defied Voldemort 3 times, that would've excluded Harry from the prophecy. What would've happened then is Voldemort would've gone after Neville and would've killed him. Yes, maybe Voldemort could've thought James was Harry's father, but upon finding out, seeing as the child was his and to protect Lily, Severus would most likely tell the Dark Lord. If Severus was unaware he was Harry's father, then James and Lily would've still died, but Harry wouldn't've been the "Chosen One", Voldemort woudn't've known the "Chosen One" was Neville, thus creating a whole different universe. Anyway, I would've still loved a bit of canonical Snily romance, maybe in a Pre-James era?

From the books and films I gather that they didn't. But in the Muggle world, when your 12 or older you start to have jobs to help you with social and financial skills, business skill and to become more independent. Doesn't it work the same way in wizarding world? If it doesn't, why not? It would've helped Arthur and Molly out tremendously financially speaking and the kids could've learned a lot from it as well. If Ron had had a job he wouldn't have to use his brothers wand or rat for example or he could've bought his own robe and not being picked at at school. What's the law here? And what's your (HP theory and commenters) take on this?

Most places will only start hiring at 16 according to law, and even that is restricted with as far as how much you can work because you are not a legal adult until you are 18. The entertainment industry, it is the only exception that I can think of where younger children are working, and children working in it are strictly monitored. You also kind of make it sound like minors absolutely have to get jobs. It can be helpful if it doesn't interfere with their school work, but they don't have to. Furthermore, even if they do, their parents are still responsible for them. In fact, some countries like Japan are really strict with kids working and actually don't want them to because it affects their school work. Granted, school are overstepping their boundaries there, but you get my point.

Hear me out on this in the half blood prince there was only one student that got the liquid luck snape so what if he saved his luck to get with Lilly and then she ended up pregnant with Harry because with liquid luck all your endeavors will succeed at least till it wears off

What about snape's patronius charm being a deer like lily and Harry's? That's the deal sealer right there I think

Good theory besides the fact that Harry looks just like James with Lily's eyes. We would have looked like Snape.

What if Harry found out after Dumbledores death that Snape was his biological father; and Snape the same finding out Harry was his son

This was a very good theory. Really, the only person who knows whether Snape is Harry’s biological father would be J K Rowling.
