    This was extremely helpful using my old iPhone 5s on camper van. However ‘find my friends App’ no longer available for later models, so used ‘find my’ app, no charges and same principle. (Used find my friend app on old phone still).

    Fantastic video mate. Many thanks all the way from New Zealand. Quick question, is it best to disable anything else in the tracker phone? Like auto updates for the iOS etc that might be problematic with the phone hidden in the car, or anything else?

    • @TorqueSteer
      @TorqueSteer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question and thanks for the comment. I like to disable as much as I can just to avoid it accidentally using up the data. So typically, I’ll turn off everything in iCloud except fine my phone and disable and auto updates. Then I’ll set the phone to do not disturb mode and disable WiFi and Bluetooth. It just keeps it quiet behind wherever you hide it.

    I got a new iPhone 7 Plus so I’m going to use my old 5s as a tracker. I’ll buy a prepaid nano SIM card and there’s a usb charge port inside the middle console. I’ll just put stuff over it the phone to hide it. Or I may just put the phone hidden inside the back seat pockets since I just want to track from a day to day basis. Now I wonder if I need to reset my 5s and add new number from new sim or maybe I don’t need to delete anything and use the new sim? I’ll see.

    Just setting up tracker for my camper. Since video recorded, there have been changes to the app- Find my friends is combined with find my phone. How do I add my tracker phone/email address now? Thank you so much

    When you use iCloud and use phone finder, report it lost, not black listed. It should connect to any wifi around it.

    You could add advice that there are several different fuses out there so you will need to buy the specific piggy back holder for your car.

    I don’t use my car too often, sometimes once a week due to WFH and a second car. Would charging the phone drain my car battery over time if I’m not running the car?

    Hello! I'm trying to attach an old Samsung A5 to my car. The only problem I have that I don't know, how much data is those apps sending? So is it (for example) 1MB/day?

    • @TorqueSteer
      @TorqueSteer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd probably say less than a few MB. You should be able to download an app (especially with it being an Android) to monitor data usage. It would be able to give you a more accurate answer than I could.

    • @ArktisVodka
      @ArktisVodka 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for reply! I have about 0,066€/Mb in this finnish prepaid. And the limit is 6€. So I have about 90Mb to use.
      I was just wondering if this GPS app is just sending coordinates that is about 8-9 bytes (8 bytes without the decimal in coordinates), but if the app sends commercials, time, info from the phone or other metadata, it will increase the sent bytes. That is what I'm interested.
      So the only thing here is to grab Kali and start monitoring my network? :D

    How often do you have to top up? and do you have to take the phone out the car to top up?

    • @TorqueSteer
      @TorqueSteer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would all depend on your network. Mine is a rolling 30 day deal from an old phone. Many networks let you top up via an app. As for how often, it depends on how much data you have. However, pinging the phone to see where it is only uses a few kilobytes so even 100mb would last you ages.

      If you’re in the UK, three is really good. Pay as you, go in 1.5 months, I have used 50p from £10 credit, with regular checking and testing. It’s something like 1p per MB, and it uses hardly any data.

    Does the phone drain car battery with it being constantly on charge?

    • @TorqueSteer
      @TorqueSteer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Tony Thompson technically yes but the power consumption is so small that a car battery could power the phone for weeks on end. In the real world, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Your alarm system most probably uses more power.

      A car battery recharges it self with its being used which is why a car battery last really long

    Do yourself a favour and buy some crimping pliers! Seriously though, good video. Probably better to source the live from somewhere a little less obvious though, it would be good if one glance at the fuses didn't reveal a suspicious connection.

      Kind of. If you log into iCloud.com with a web browser, you can use the find my iPhone feature which would work. Just not as slick as iPhone > iPhone.
