Thank you for the transparent look. I am in the same niche group as you are, although I run my channel almost entirely without getting in front of the camera myself. Seeing the kind of possibilities for making money doing videos was nice to see in a group that is more applicable to me. I tend not to look at too many "How Much Money I made on TH-cam" videos, because the creators making those videos are never within my niche, and in some cases, I tend to think their numbers are more click-baity. Thanks for the fresh look from inside my niche, and for the transparency. I look forward to looking at more of your videos!

Skyler, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am in my 70's and have no plans on starting a channel, but was curious how it all works. I used to just watch you tube videos, then I learned the importance of giving a "like". Now I "like" the videos that I really like to reward that person for the time they spent or the information they provided. Of course you got a "like" and my first comment on a video. I also appreciated your integrity and ethics. Thanks again, take care.

Awesome video! I am new to your channel and I have to say, as someone who is trying to get started in TH-cam myself, yours is the first video I have watched of all the videos that I have watched on how to get started that really was easy to understand and relate to, without all the flash that others use in theirs (along with unnecessary production elements). I also watched your other video on threaded wood inserts and that was very helpful! Keep up the good work!

Skyler, Thank you for your channel & being so transparent. I’ve kicked the idea around to start a TH-cam channel for wood working. My career for 50+ yrs was Photography-mainly portraits & Weddings-I got burnt out.
Now my hobby for most of those yrs was woodworking. However right now I’m more interested in organizing my shop & honing my skills-not starting another 9-5 ( more like 24|7) fun is more important now than $$$.
Keep up the great work ❤️it. Wilber & Margaret👴🏻🧑‍🦳

Hello, I only just discovered your channel this week through the YT algorithm and I'm guessing it's because I'm a new laser enthusiast and dreaming about purchasing the Xtool S1 (I currently have a D1). I enjoyed watching your clips but hadn't subscribed until I came across this one, and not just because of "what" you've shared on this particular video, but more the "why". I love that you have chosen to be so transparent and open with your journey that I subscribed without hesitation. Please continue to be your true, authentic and unapologetic self because it will attract a loyal following and I can attest that I will be here, and looking forward to watching even more. Take care and I wish you every success going forward :)

Thanks for sharing this Skyler. I guess at the end of the day, if you are having fun, well not the editing bit of it clearly, but in general, and you are getting a bit of money coming in too, then it is a good feeling. With YT you have to have a hobby or interest that people will spend time watching, and it is hard to differenciate yourself from the rest of the pack. But clearly you are doing something right as your RPM is moving in a positive direct. In terms of your content, I have watch the majority of your videos and always find something of interest or something I did not know. i am not a huge woodworker but dabble a bit when I get the time, so your videos do help people, they have certainly helped me. Keep it up and I look forward to the next one.

Thanks for putting out what it's like for a small channel. One thing that you didn't touch on was just how much time it takes to film and edit the videos. Sometimes people don't realize that you're earning less than minimum wage putting these out and that it's more about doing something you love rather than for the money. - Chris

Thank you Skyler! We have had our channel for a couple of years and we've grown it slowly because of the lack of time we have to dedicate to it. We are now in a position to be able to put more time into the channel but the one thing that holds us back is video editing. We have a camera and an iphone but it is always so confusing when I try to upload and edit. I'm very tech savvy too, which makes it even more frustrating. We are woodworkers and also build and refinish furniture as well as offer woodworking classes. Thank you for this video as we are also monetized and our average RPM is $3-6 but we need to get our subscribers and views up. Hopefully as we are able to put more time into the channel, we will be able to create better content and bring in more revenue.

I am glad that you did this video. Eventhough you are a small channel, you kept it real in disclosing what you make from TH-cam. I hope to launch my channel some day, and I am super nervous about it. I do woodworking as well. You are right about putting your spin on things eve if there are a lot of videos on the same topic. From watching other woodworker videos, many of them do just about the same thing, but they put their own twist to it. Like a cutting board video "if you seen one you've seen them all" but I have seen so many different ways to make a cutting board, that now I will make cutting board videos and show what I can do. Keep up the awesome work.

Thank you so much. Yes, you should do it now. Don’t wait till you are ready. Do it before you are ready. You will learn the ropes of TH-cam as you go. I remember posting my first video ever. I posted and kept in on unlisted for two weeks being afraid to publish it. Then one night after a few glasses of wine I pushed the button and made it public and went to bed. I woke up terrified that I would have negative feedback or comments and to my surprise nobody saw my video, no views, no comments. That was the best explanation of monetizing a TH-cam channel that I've seen. And I have been impressed with all the wood projects or demos you've done. I'm at a loss as to why you would get rude comments, unless it was from your competition. All anyone's accented speech indicates is that you speak more than one language. So you are really way ahead of most Anericans! I watch mostly the sailing channels for enjoyment and learning additional skills. I do my own DIY cabinetry when renovating my boat's interior. I'm thinking of making some hideaway places in the cabinetry on my boat, for valuables . If you think of any ideas along that line, add it to your video projects. I, for one, would appreciate some new ideas.

Skyler, I really appreciate your explaining how this TH-cam world has worked for you. I understand your stated insecurity as to the quality of your work being sufficient to start selling it. People just seem to love the handmade and not see the imperfections you do. Making the same thing over and over is not much fun though. I'm working towards always improving my skills and making interesting stuff I haven't made before. Design is such an important part of the whole process, I think. I am learning from you even though I have been doing this for 50 years.

Thank you for this detail. Many of us are considering starting a TH-cam channel but don't know how to get started or know if it is worth our time and effort. You did a great job with your explanation. I'd be curious how much of your time is spent on the craft vs. the technical time putting together the videos and doing the channel management. I worry that the management time will rob me of my craft/hobby time. It's much more fulfilling to build the craft than it is to do the video editing, etc. As in photography, it's much more enjoyable to shoot the photograph than sit and edit it as well as run a business around it. It is apparent that teaching something is much more valuable than the creation of something. I wish you more success with both of your channels.

Very nice and useful video. I subscribed to your channel. You talk calmly and quite clearly about the development of a TH-cam channel, unlike many other bloggers who falsely brag about winnings that they have never seen.. I believe you and agree with you! But one more thing should be said... the payments are different for America, Europe, Asia and Russia... The best pay is in the USA, but the money is not much and barely enough to live in the big city.. With TH-cam you won't become real millionaires, but there will be some income.

Thank you for sharing. You definitely will get more views once you settle into your niche. I enjoyed your laser videos. Change is good. Like you said you can't please everyone and do what you enjoy. Everyone stay safe, happy 😊😊 and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia.

There are no wrong answers in art. Like you said, that's something in your head that you just have to deal with and get over. I really like your boxes and the bowl you made. And I can't make them myself because I don't have a wood shop, so I would buy your pieces.

Thank you for explaining, for years I have thought of doing a Vlog or Utube making money as a side hustle. I do ok being retired, but I love to learn and find other ways to generate income. Making sure I have enough money throughout my retirement years learning other ways. I also think it looks fun and challenging.

Thanks for the video, found it interesting even though I don’t plan to make any videos. Appreciate your openness. I find your woodworking offerings very interesting and informative, you have given me many ideas to pursue and some techniques I find new and useful even though I’ve at it for 70 years, however using mostly hand tools for the first couple decades. I want to encourage you as not only is your content and craftsmanship good but you’re a fine teacher. Best regards

Hi Skyler, I really enjoy your videos. They are well presented, despite the limited editing :)
As to the laser issue… I noticed that they can infer the “best”. Not your fault, but I don’t watch those types from any channel. Rarely do they really compare different products. I didn’t watch yours, so I cannot say whether yours were different. But, as you mentioned, it is a trust issue. When a channel becomes a running list of product commercials, I unsubscribe. I have a laser, and watch the how-to/tips from several creators, but they have to tie into my overall woodworking efforts. I will have to go watch your Falcon one, I am intrigued by the inlays.
Keep doing you! It will all balance out, I am sure. As you said about starting YT to several comments, just start making products to sell, yesterday! Your unique boxes are beautiful.

OK, I almost left over the laser videos, but some of your how to videos was what drew me to subscribe, keep up the great work and good luck. 😂
