Wow! Skyler you're amazing!! Thank you so much for doing this video, we appreciate your shout out and support. As for the species of wood in the boxes, we only carry a few native species, they are going to be western "Claro" walnut, eastern cherry, myrtlewood and Western Big Leaf maple.
Thank you so much for the comment. I was happy with the boxes I got (placed two more orders since this video) . Just checked out the website today... looks like the price increased by $15?
@@woodworkingwithSkyler We had to, between your video and Leahs we've sold over 100 mystery boxes in 2 weeks, we've had to go into some of our older inventory to make new boxes out of lumber and not just from the cut off bin. This is good though. I've been ribbed for a year about these. I ordered 400 custom boxes and my dad thought it was a lifetime supply. We have his attention now and he's seeing the value in them more and being even more intentional on the mix and quality of the wood we put into them. UPS charges have also recently went up a bit as well.
I feel so fortunate we have the most wonderful hardwoods store just a mile from my house. Every exotic you could ever ask for. And a whole section of smalls and cutoffs at very reasonable prices.
I bought a box of exotics online, rather disappointing for the money laid out, then I discovered church- run thrift stores. They usually have a good selection of exotics that are fashioned into shelfs, plaques, awards, etc. You can pretty much tell you've got a nice hunk just by the heft alone, and the fun part is they are usually $1-2 bucks each.
Believe that more open grain wood with the ribbon may be Anigre. had to identify some of those without actually evaluating the cell structure on the end grain. But some very nice quilted maple!
Skyler that maple is absolutely gorgeous. Also on cleaning the wood, I am in Texas and was given some very dirty mesquite that I cleaned with a brush and some compressed air. Good luck 👍
Hi Jamie. Thank you so much. Yes, feeling great, I am pretty much 100% back just can’t lift anything over 20lb for next 3 weeks. I will miss having my implants( had them for 20years and I had problems with last 2 sets) so the doctor recommended I take them out for a year let my body heal then I can reimplant. So far…so good
To clean the wood you have a few options, you can use high pressure hose and dry the wood again( I wouldn’t go that way because they are too small) Or you can sand blast it with glass bead, probably the best way (the way I do it) or you can sand it/ use a die grinder or just leave it the way it is. Depending on what you want to do with it. If you’re using it with resin, I’d recommend a pressure pot to shrink the bubbles and to seal the burl first so you don’t get a heap of bubbles.I find clear resin to be the best as colour resin hides all the goodness in the burl. Everything i said is just my opinion and you should do what you think is best.
The burls are pressure washed when they are green so it may only need a wire brush cleaning. It was a little hard to see but it may have been starting to spalt and that is the darker/dirtiness making it look that way.
I forget the details, and I could remember it all wrong. You'll need to put the wood in a vacuum chamber, in a bath of a special type of resin, which will replace all of the air with resin. Then, I think you bake it for a bit. You'll need to look it up. But you want to get all of the air out of the wood, or you'll have those annoying bubbles.
Hey Miss Sky! I know you usually use thinner pieces of wood. With these thicker pieces will you mill them down or resaw them? I went to their website and the prices of "Mystery Wood" seemed pretty affordable. Thanks for the info! One more question though... where's Grover!
Hi Dennis, not sure what I will do. Probably resaw and make some boxes with wrap around grain. As for Grover…. lol…..Apparently he was out of town ( saw his reply to an other comment)
I do quite a bit of epoxy. I recommend beginning with something small, like filling a crack, or knot hole, or void. I just use masking tape on the back side, well overlapping the hole or void. If on an edge I use masking tape backed with a strip of wood. Epoxy is like trying to contain thick water, It will find every little crack or hole to run out. If it is thick or deep hole do it in steps. Epoxy is full of bubbles after its mixed. I use a heat gun to pop the bubbles. If you pour to thick some of the bubbles get trapped, or worse come to the surface long after you think it is all good. I try to limit it to about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick, pop the bubble and then add more. Be sure to put it all on a sheet of throw away plastic, good idea when mixing. The color dye is added after you mix, It takes a good 12 hours to set, so you have quite a bit of time to work with it. I let the surface be messy as it can be sanded or planed much like wood, but wait 24 hours before you do that. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area at the fumes are pretty bad, at least for me. Lots of good ideas on Utube.
the wood your wondering about is myrtle wood, very very pretty. I have made some tables out of much bigger pieces, but all the little noods on there, i have always left alone, poured epoxy right over them. Not saying thats what everybody should do, just one guys thoughts.
Beautiful wood Skyler. The maple is absolutely gorgeous. Also maybe a soft brush with very little air to clean the wood. I’m in Texas and have had to clean up mesquite given to me and that seems to work. Good luck 👍
I'm sure we will see you use up all that wood within the next six months or less. Would hate for you to join our club of those who buy wood only to sit around for years. Ha

Just wanted to say that I'm receiving my first box today! I ordered a mystery box after seeing Skylers video.

I am jealous
Skyler, you really have a knack for finding beautiful wood, can’t wait to see how you transform them!
You and me both! Thank you Mike
Thank you for the nice and informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
😅I just watched this post and enjoyed it. Thank you for posting it. I will need to check out thier site
Glad you enjoyed it

I really would like a video detailing how you would really pop the figure on that quilted maple.
Apply a light brown dye stain, then seal with shellac. After that with your choice of final finish.
Very nice wood Skyler.
Thanks 👍
Great job. Thank you 😊
Thank you too!
That is super-cool. I didn't know such a thing existed. Beautiful wood.
Thank you. I was so happy with it I just placed an order for 2 more boxes
Looks to be big leaf maple an abundant species in the nw
Could be

That "flash of light" is called "Chatoyance" which is a French word for the effect of Tiger Eye gems.
I didnt know its french. Thank you
Chatoyance is a derivative of the original French. “Chat” is French for Cat, by the way. The Chatoyant effect… like the shine of light in a cat’s eye.

Great tip! Thank you
really nice pieces, i ordered 2 thank you
Thank you. I just ordered two more as well. Come back and let me know what kind of great prices you got
@@woodworkingwithSkyler Mine were almost all curly and quilted maple and one piece of crotch walnut. Thank you so much for recommending
@@beadedlizard you are very welcome. I got 3 more boxes will unbox tomorrow
thanks
That maple looks stunning I’m looking forward to seeing what it looks like with finish on it
Me too! I am not sure what I am going to make with it yet
Quilted maple box with walnut trim would look cool.
Great idea! Will try that
may sound weird, but I find that smelling the wood often helps ID the species of tree
I will try that next time
Beautiful wood.Thank You😇😇😇
Thank you too!
Those are beautiful pieces!
Hope the store is doing well ☺
Hi Dian, thank you. So far is not doing too bad
عمل عظيم. شكرًا لك
I just checked their website. The mystery boxes have increased to $150. 😮
I know. I was disappointed on the price increase as well
Very nice wood! I might get one of those boxes myself….also hope you’re doing better after your surgery! 😊

How much did it cost in total of both boxes ?
@@massoodn9410Right. ow the mystery box is at $150
Thanks for the tip. I had not found this supplier yet. Also, the fancy name you were looking for is "chatoyance". 🙂
Yes! I heard that word before, but I couldn’t really it! Thank you
Thanks!
Thank you Frank

How long where those pieces?
About 12 inches
At $135 per box, that's kinda pricey per board foot, especially for the box that's mostly black walnut. The quilted maple is stunning. 8)
Turns out the walnut pieces are Claro Walnut nut black walnut. Not sure what that is… will have to look it up
It's claro walnut...it is not cheap....company should have labeled them.

It's hard to believe they used to burn quilted wood instead of use it. They thought that the figuring made the wood unusable for furniture.
What? I didn’t know that! Thanks crazy! It’s so beautiful
My dad sometimes says "we buy cull logs and sell exotic lumber". I have an antique at home that has a fantastic birdseye maple drawer bottom.

I don’t think they carry poplar. I looked on their website and maybe it is white cedar? Not sure
It looks like canary wood to me
