The Fujifilm X-E4 - Baby X-Pro3 or X100V killer?

  • In this video I give my thoughts and first impressions on the Fuji X-E4 after one week of use. This is not a review. I haven't even had the chance to properly edit and adjust the photos since they are not yet supported in Lightroom. And for that reason I wont comment all that much on the the new 27mm f2.8. After the Adobe update I will revisit the files and give my opinion on the lens.

Thanks for the review! Been waiting on it since it was announced! I've been shooting with an X-E3 because of your review on it years ago. This one was an instant preorder for me. I'm frankly surprised, (maybe not surprised, just tired of it now) by how many people don't get this is a camera people actually want. I WANT IT. If you've shot long enough you know what you care about and want out of a camera. It shouldn't be that hard to accept other people may want different things from you. You want weather sealing and more buttons and dials? Just get an XT-4? Isn't that the whole point of having different models?

For an extra £200 I'd probably still get the X-T30, though I can see the appeal of the slightly smaller body if paired with the new 27mm lens. It's not much bigger than the X-T30 but I'd definitely miss the flexibility of the extra buttons and dials, though it would be nice to have the Q button on top! I'm not a fan of scrolling through endless menus, so give me a quick access button or dial for most features and I'll be happy (here wishing the X-T30 had a d-pad and ISO dial).

I totally agree on the flip screen. I was debating the X-S10 for the small size and stabilization but having to rotate that screen to the side when I want to take an image of my dog seems like it would get old really fast. Since I own the X-T30 I will probably pass on the the X-E4. Even though I would prefer the rangefinder style I'm not sure it makes sense to switch, unless I'm missing something. I am tempted to upgrade to that new XF 27mm. The missing dial is the only thing I dislike on mine. The 27mm was my first lens and I still love it. If I were starting over I think the X-E4 and the 27mm would be perfect.

    1. The sensor is "less stellar" in high ISOs. Do you mean in therms of noise? DR? It is only about 2 MP more than the old so I thought it wouldn't be much of a difference.

I’ve pretty much owned or used all Fuji X/GFX cameras over the past 11 years. For a while even professionally as a fashion/beauty photographer. I pretty much sold all of them except the X-E4. To me, this is the best Fuji camera they ever made. I love the X100(V), but to be able to use the small 16, 35 and 50 lenses (next to the 23) is too valuable for me. My other fav was the X-Pro2, but they messed it up for me with the X-Pro3 (with its gadget titanium topplate, subscreen and LCD). So, next to several M bodies and a Q2M the X-E4 stays with me for now. PS. funny that you also prefer the 24MP for low light shooting. I thaught it was only me…😅

Since owning the xpro3, I realize that owning previous cameras too many buttons is just too many buttons. With less buttons and distractions in the xpro3, i enjoy my time taking pictures and moments way better, less fiddling around when shooting.
The xe4 looks sexy with minimalist approach, i have to admit i was a bit baffled with the omission of the focusing mode dial, but then again you can program it to other buttons or the swipe motion - so, no big deal for me.

@@fredbloggs545 I wish it is as simple as you've said. However, I think it is worth to compare leaf vs mechanical shutter, sharp f2 lens vs the new 27mm f2.8, having a built-in ND filter, a side switch for focus settings, the layout of the buttons and dials, weather sealing, even the battery life, all these aspects are different. It's a big camera, I don't use it much (tend to be quicker with the x-e3 which is a weapon of a camera in terms of speed). When I do I always enjoy it. Mic socket is handy. Good video. Fast AF. I wish the exposure comp button could toggle rather than being held down (maybe it can be changed in the menu). I say get one if you fancy it - can't really go wrong and they seem to hold the money well.
