Thank you Nancy for this tutorial, I've watched it a couple of times now. You have been such a blessing to me. I'm going to try the Steam a Seam method on a " quilt " that's been my practice piece when I started to sew. It's not quilted but hand tied. Instead of using yarn to tie it we used embroidery floss, and I really like the way it looks instead of the yarn. I have been so fortunate to be asked to join a group of ladies into their sewing group, what a blessing. It is so isolating where I live, it's been a wonderful gift. Thank you once again, I watch all your videos, there's so much in them for me.
Omg! I am so glad I found this video. I have been struggling with machine binding a quilt for 2 days! I thought it would be faster than my regular hand stitching & it’s a disaster! I have been attempting to do the 1st method of stitch in the ditch. I hate how it looks in the back. I’m new to quilting so my seams aren’t always straight & boy can you tell in the back even if using a matching thread. My binding is uneven & I miss catching the binding too. I am ripping it out tomorrow & doing method #2. Thank you so much!
Hello, thank you for such a great tutorial!! I have so many quilts that needed the final binding step. Hand binding was always the preferred method but it will take forever and time is at a premium here. This is exactly what I needed and was always afraid to start until now. Thank you!
Another winner, Nancy! I’m going to share the link to this video with our Wednesday Worker Bee this week. There are a couple ladies who can’t do the binding because of arthritis etc. I love the relaxation I get from hand sewing the binding. However knowing how to do it by machine can help us finish the neonatal quilts a few hours quicker! Thanks for mentioning the West Michigan Quilters’ Guild’s neonatal commitment! Love working on those cute baby quilts!💕
I really enjoyed watching your video. You keep things moving and interesting. It's so nice to learn different methods of putting on binding. I'm having trouble sewing by hand anymore and learning machine techniques will suit me better.
I love the idea of stitching the quilt from the back. But you can reverse that and attach the binding to the back then fold it over and sew on the front. Love your video's!
that's what I do 99% of the time... every once in awhile, I'll not be paying enough attention to what I'm doing and will accidentally do the first stitching on the front of the quilt... then I HAVE to hand stitch it to the back, because I don't like the line of stitching showing on the front, although I never thought about using 'fancy' thread in the bobbin.
I actually do many baby quilts and I attach the binding to the back first then I press the binding away as you do then I am able to stitch from the front/top and stay on the binding. I figure the stitch line on the back is just that, on the back.
Yes! I do that too. It's also cute to use a serpentine or decorative stitch on the front, so it's clear that the quilter intended for stitches to be on the front.
Love Susan Cleveland! I do the flange binding frequently because I love the look and I love the fact it is machine sewn. I really, really do not like to hand sew but I force myself to hand sew bindings on my quilts because I think it looks so much better. Wall hangings may get a machine sewn binding depending on what it is. Thanks for your tips and tutorials!
In total agreement I like it by hand I always finish my waistbands, cuffs etc. by hand also because it is impossible not to have an uneven lip on the back simply impossible. I liked your stitching from the back method. The little line of metallic is kind of cool too. Thanks for the name of that bike pattern love it
Hmmmmm Came for the binding tips and left with a bicycle pattern and yet ANOTHER project!! Love the tips, but I've been looking for that pattern for ages. So I thank you so much for passing along the name of the company from whom I ordered it. By the way? I'll be binding the bicycle as you've shown and thank you sooooo much for all you share with the viewers. Definitely have you subscribed and the notification bel1 is on!!
I have Susan Cleveland’s Craftsy class and it is a wonderful class. She is such a fun teacher. Nancy you would LOVE the class. She gives tons of ideas and techniques to really make your quilts unique. They remind a lot of your style
Thanks for the video. Great options for binding. I also personally prefer hand binding. Love that seven sister quilt. I also have seven sisters now I want to find that pattern. 😀
Like you Nancy I prefer to hand quilt the binding....it’s like putting your last bit of love into it😍 plus now that I leave that extra bit of batting on the edge which I learnt from you in a previous video they look much better... you said you had points deducted in a quilt competition because your binding wasn’t plump 😂. Live ! What will be next 😂. Thank you Nancy you are a treasure 💐loved your plump cat too 😂😘
I love the look of hand stitching on binding also. But carpal tunnel, arthritis and trigger finger pretty much messes up that option for me so I truly appreciate this video. 😀
Hello Nancy I'm new to your channel and I'm so glad I found it. But I wondered if you had videos or tutorials on your garment making as well? If so, where can I go to find that?
Hi Karen, I don't have any videos on garment making - I am a garment maker (wedding dresses, ComicCon costumes and cloths for myself) but no videos - yet - you never know :) Thanks for watching! Nancy
This was so helpful thank you from Sandy from Henderson Nv.hope you show us how you make bagy quilts , i make receiving blankets for the hospital for the new born babys my email sandy39@ix.netcom.com thank you
It's funny, you don't find many that come from large families - I couldn't imagine coming from a small family - but then our son is on only child with about 30 cousins.
Hi Billie, that quilt pattern is from Nancy Rink and called "Getting to know Hue" - it was a block of the month class I taught. Nancy Rinks patterns are wonderful :)
Hi Linda, sorry you didn't like my tips along the way :) - glad you liked the parts you liked. In my videos I most always add lots of tips along the way so if you want to watch my videos, you can expect more :)Nancy

I hope that "method #2" works :)
Chris Hunt U.K. I sew my binding on the back and stitch it down by machine onto the front. Its much neater . Love your quilts!

Great video - thanks for going over the techniques! The filming was very good for live. Love all your videos.
Thanks Jutta :)
I have really enjoyed watching your videos. You are a really good teacher. Thanks for sharing various ways of machine binding.
Your manicures are always perfection. (like your quilts)
I really enjoyed watching your video. You keep things moving and interesting.
It's so nice to learn different methods of putting on binding. I'm having trouble sewing by hand anymore and learning machine techniques will suit me better.

Great job with all 3 explanations.
Cool bike quilt!

Hey Bridget - the pattern is a 60 degree star - and a few setting shapes :)

Thanks Di - I'm so glad you have "happy" bindings how !!
love this video. I do most of my quilt binding by machine. most of my quilts are full or queen size.
Do you ever use a decorative stitch?? Very good tutorial. Pretty quilts. Love the bike one.
Hi Susan, thanks for watching and the comment. I don't use a decorative stitch - for me it is just not the look i am looking for :)
I love the look of hand stitching on binding also. But carpal tunnel, arthritis and trigger finger pretty much messes up that option for me so I truly appreciate this video. 😀
Hi! I love your video's!!
Nancy can you start your binding from the back instead of the front. I love the way the back looks like.
Sure you can, just be sure you have marked the back so you know where the edge is :)
Love all your different methods of binding. Where did you buy the scissors with black handle?
Those are a Kai professional - great scissors :)

Love the bike :)
Hi from Canada
What is the name of your nail polish? I have looked for something like this! Thanks for your great videos, I’ve learned so much from you!
Hi Mary - not sure about the color name but thank you for the complement - i have a fabulous nail tech.
Have you ever used a stitch in the ditch/ edge stitching foot?
Nope - give it a try :)
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼welcome to live videos !!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This was so helpful thank you from Sandy from Henderson Nv.hope you show us how you make bagy quilts , i make receiving blankets for the hospital for the new born babys my email sandy39@ix.netcom.com thank you
I use glue , it's the greatest thing!! Makes binding sooo much easier for me.
Windy Stroud And the glue doesn't gum up the sewing machine needle or become hard when dried?
Hand stitching wins hands down, but it is nice to have a few options.
I have six sisters! cool beans
five brothers.
It's funny, you don't find many that come from large families - I couldn't imagine coming from a small family - but then our son is on only child with about 30 cousins.
Please tell me the pattern name of the 2nd quilt you showed.
Hi Billie, that quilt pattern is from Nancy Rink and called "Getting to know Hue" - it was a block of the month class I taught. Nancy Rinks patterns are wonderful :)
You remind me of Edie Falco from 'The Sopranos.' You're a mafia wife who quilts! Does she have a gun in her quilting basket?
Great tutorial on machine binding. You gave a lot of tips on many other things so it made your tutorial long.
Hi Linda, sorry you didn't like my tips along the way :) - glad you liked the parts you liked. In my videos I most always add lots of tips along the way so if you want to watch my videos, you can expect more :)Nancy
I liked your tips.
