I created art as a child and as a young adult because I could not read or write and use art to communicate. I did teach myself to read and write and at the age of 45, I achieved my lifetime dream of completing a bachelor's honors degree in contemporary art practice which I got a first-class honors degree. I love your advice and videos, I am slowly trying to adjust and be in front of the camera. Thanks
What I did was something crazy on my first art sale: I made up a number and to my surprise the buyer bought it at that price. The price- $1400. It was some random thing on Facebook. I didn’t even list it on Marketplace. Just posting in progress shots. Now one of the frustrating things I see locally is artists frequently low balling their art. Like so low they barely make back supplies used. My advice to artists is don’t do that. Also avoid selling in galleries that take more than 30% commission. They’re increasingly becoming unnecessary in the new century as people are getting more comfortable buying online direct from the artist.
I lowballed my art when I started too, and this year my mom sold a cake and I saw her lowball herself, and it just hurt lol, but I'm glad that videos like this exist and we have proof of artists making a living for themselves without a gallery backing them!!!
If it's a one time, sporadic sale and not a consistent monthly revenue, then you surely cannot live off it. Galleries are the only way to 'institutionalize' your art and turn your art from low priced commodity to investment pieces.
I keep hearing the basics you’re suggesting in this video. I mean MANY websites, videos, blogs, etc. buuuut, it seems to ACTUALLY make sense coming from you. Your delivery is right up my alley, thanks for the knowledge nuggets!!!
You really changed my perspective today and I thank you. So much advice I've heard to date is to "find your niche" ---a thing that bedeviled me as I don't have "a niche" without lopping off whole parts of myself. I contain multitudes, right? What's the niche? What's the niche? WHAT IS the niche???? I would torment myself, feeling like I was forcing myself to back into a box and not go forward. But thanks to your thoughts here, I realized it's not about Nicheland, it's about Uniqueville. You ARE the niche. BE the niche. Brilliant.
Yes be the Niche, but take it a step further. Your niche is your brand and it is what you are good at. Your groove is your niche. I am an artist though so I take it even further and know that my niche is my brand and when I die my art gets much more value because it is my BRAND. Your niche is something you are good at. Find that groove-that niche-your brand!
I'm 63 and although having created art since age 5, I have only referred to myself as an artist once. I recently found your channel and must say I agree with your opinions and ideas moreso than any other artist I have known. I'm a full-time caretaker for my wife who suffered a severe stroke and heart attack 10 years ago and I'm in no way blaming her, nor my position for refraining from creating art. Sometimes life has different paths it wants us to take. I simply wanted to tell you I find both your art and your character wicked beautiful. Congratulations on your new studio. I can't wait to see what you do with all that room. I just bought a new house with a perfect basement for a studio and after watching your video, your energy instilled within me a need in getting back to my love of art. Thank you.
I so needed this video!! At the beginning of making my artistic endeavours into a business. And recently realized I need to find my own unique style and I’m excited as an idea came to me that I still have to implement. But…I’m excited to go and run with it. I might be 42 years old, single mama with 4 kiddos and started painting after a massive mental breakdown and hospitalization and some crazy big life changes. It’s not too late!
At 10:40 I never looked at it as me- my art. I've always kept my personal life in private, but you've made me realize that it's good to show a little bit of me so that it can be related to my art. It makes a lot of sense!
So happy for your big sale, here's to your art reaching higher numbers. I myself am doing the transition of doing just fanart to working on my original art after many years of setting it aside.
You are so right about wanting to know the artist when you purchase a painting. When I research an artist I read the bio first. Well done for having your boy at 16. Very brave. Life is so much better with children. They make life fun. Happy painting
At 70 years young, I took up painting. My passion is photography but due to chronic back issues and pain, I cannot carry my digital SLR and of course the heavy lenses. I now use my iPhone 14 Pro to take photos. When I am in a painting class, the most wonderful and odd thing happens, I forget about the pain. I am not kidding about this, for me it is like taking a mini break from pain. I cannot sit or stand too long so I do both while I paint. I am improving on my art skills and finally decided on painting with oil because is more forgiving. Also, the bigger the canvas, the longer the strokes and that is easier and satisfying for me. Thank you for your helpful video, you have a wonderful personality.
This is a fantastic video. You condensed so much valuable marketing and branding info into such a small package. It applies to so much more than selling art. Much appreciation Kayla! ☮☮☮
All you need is trust your talent. If it is liked, someone will buy it. Forget about critics and galleries who push some for their own account and greed. Art remains a gift. Share it profoundly.
I started drawing horses because I wanted one. I paint now to process my emotions. Thanks for sharing your story. The only tip I have for artists is to NOT under price your art. Your time and talent are worthy.
That is some story kiddo! I'm glad your family kept the extras and you got a replacement. Thanks for the tips on increasing the value of your art. It was very informative and makes a lot of sense. I am recently retired and just getting started creating visual art but I have been beading as a hobby for years using antique and vintage beads I repurpose from old jewelry and other items. I found your video because I am going to start selling earrings I previously only gave as gifts to family and friends, so I and need to figure out how to price them. Your video gave me a perspective I had not considered, definitely great food for thought. So, thanks, and Your paintings are beautiful!
Just found you and I already adore you! Thank you for sharing your thoughtful insight and magnetic personality with us. Never change a thing please! You are a brilliant shining star 💖
The only reason your painting sold for less than $12k is because of your self belief. Please grow your self belief into your artistic skill level. Applying the rhetoric of art value to others (whose art you value) in a positive light, and in a negative light to yourself is not the thing to do. In selling your painting cheep, like you did ($1,200.), you not only make your life financially more difficult, but you risk lowering the public’s perception of the value of art, which makes things harder for other artists as well. You’re good, now be professional enough to believe it, and be properly compensated. PS. Thanks for being brave enough to put yourself out there with a TH-cam channel. You gave some really good advice, I appreciate it.
Congratulations on finding your market by increasing your prices! Refining and defining exactly unique point of view is so key to that process! I also love to recommend that folks increase their knowledge about art terms and where they locate themselves in the larger art world!
I just woke out of a deep sleep 3:40 am and you were watching me 😊. Thankyou this was sent to me because this is a current question on my mind, so clearly explained.
That's an awesome story! It is funny now, though of course at the time it was happenning to you it definately wasn't funny at all. I made me smile because that could have so been me! I traveled home from Denver, CO to Las Vegas with several bullet casings from my dad's funeral. So I totally get it. Thank you for sharing. I will be taking your advise and start posting on youtube and instagram more personal stories to try to increase my personal value. Just a side note I never really thought that my story was interesting but listening to you I realize that maybe it is more than I thought. I will be trying your idea soon and let people into my art, motivations, ideas and the reasons I create.
@@weriem Right? Especially since it’s sooo stunning and the detail is exquisite. If I did an abstract piece for a friend then maybe I would give them $1300 as a price point but not something like this.
Great video! Your advice about the value of the artist is spot on. Last week I had a booth at an art and craft fair, it's the first year I do this. And I noticed that people would come back at my booth and I really felt that they were willing to buy a piece of my art because they ... liked me I guess? We had a click. It happened several times. So I definitely agree, the identity and relation of the artist is very important.
And right there - you sold yourself (or should I say «upsold» if that is a word)👍 instantly I got an interest of you as an artist - which confirms exactly what you are trying to teach us viewers in this video! Great work! Subscribed immediatly👍
I love your work and everything you have taught me. I definitely red to show my face more and interact on my pages instead of just showing the final painting.
I struggle with just getting it all out there. I’ve created so many random things digitally. Also on canvas. I’m back to square one at the moment. I hadn’t been consistent enough to justify a monthly website fee. Realizing just now there are subscriptions I can cancel that would pay for it. I get overwhelmed by the online stuff sometimes, formatting it all, having a the website flow. I want to make it easy for the consumer to purchase. I finally started sharing g what was for sale and sold one of them last week for $40. lol it was a 12x12 wood board. Some of my friends said…you should have charged more. I think I just need to share more of me like you were saying for sure. Here’s to experimenting! I appreciate your videos.
I just got back into doing some art, mainly as therapy and i spose thats what i was doing as a child too. I am posting it now, mainly for myself as encouragement to keep going but there is a bit of me that would love to make money from it, a bit of validation 🥺 thanks for the advice. Your painting is stunning and worth every penny
First time I've watched you. Awesome video and content. Honestly, truly valuable thoughts and tips. But...that closing story about Grandpa dead. Bullet gift. Nailed it for me. You, girl, had me belly laughing. Great stuff! I subscribed. Thanks for all the goodness!
Oh my gosh, the mexican police probably went home and laughed after you left. They all have to be tough but dang, the dinner table conversation was probably a hoot! (Not for YOU of course! Dang, I would have been terrified as well!) And all the tips you gave are great. I'm an old gal just getting it together these last few years and appreciate this direction!
Before traveling always always empty everything out of all your suitcases, purses, makeup bags, etc. you plan to take. Make sure you don't have anything questionable in there before you pack. I learned this a while back and it has saved me a number of times.
Thank you so much for this video, it genuinely resonated with me and helped me a lot with how "be an artist" in social media. I never understood social media and how to better use it to promote my work so I stopped but this video has truly changed my perspective and inspired me. Again, thank you so much, I hope you're having a lovely day.
I think you're absolutely right, but I'm in a situation where I don't think adding myself to my art pics is gonna help whatsoever, lol. It'll do the opposite. I'm now in my early 60s, so it's a a bit different than if I were in my 20s...but for the younger crowd, go for it
The funny thing is, I saw a video clip of the high-end portrait artist you mentioned, doing a class. Every single student had painted an exact clone. Using obviously the same method and palette. So, I don't think scarcity of a style is valuable. Art is storytelling. Social schmoozing isn't my thing but people do tell me that I am authentic (which is a huge compliment as one of my core values). I typed that comment before you said authenticity & story & processing trauma (so I think those are keys behind why I do art). The Mexican story was hilarious.
Thanks, I will definitely use some of your suggestions when I get around to creating/updating my website and online presence. I just started painting in January of 2023. I took a Bob Ross paint class for a week. Watching him paint on TV for years, I thought I could do that, and I can. I'm a carpenter by trade but have always been interested in art and thought about it when I was younger in school (50 yrs ago) Now I'm tormenting myself with a mixture of BR-style painting and some online teachers who paint differently. It all comes down to where you started first. It's like do you use a Mac or PC. I'm also too much of a sponge I absorb everything and try too many things simultaneously LOL. Both good and bad. Plus there's the I don't have the time to focus right now with day to day life stuff and here I am ranting. So thanks for the suggestions. My niche will be to create original paintings with custom picture frames in my woodshop.
Ty. No one talks about money. I am constantly told I don't charge near enough but I never know how to make that happen without putting off my current customers. Good info and great artwork!
Ha I just started painting 18 months ago and I am almost old as Grandma Moses! No one wants to see that! LOL I love the work itself, that's why I get attracted to an artist-the work itself.
I have ALWAYS been an artist. As a child, ages five and seven my mom would fill the walls with my drawings and paintings! She supported me as an artist and that wonderful support made me into the artist that I am today! ~
I saw that story when you offered a memorial to your former art teacher who had moved to Oregon. You are business owner too. Amazing. You are sweet and amazing. I would love to learn how to paint water. I have a painting started, but kind of stuck.
Great tips! I feel that tgjs also applies to authors, although I was never able to put it so eloquently before. There’s a really good book by Simon Sinek, called “Start With Why”, which is similar to the reason you explained, of people getting to know YOU as an artist, what inspires you, what you’ve experienced/overcome and why you paint/create what you do. Great advice! Thank you! And BEAUTIFUL painting!!!
Thanks for your advise. As old as I am, I never stop learning from other people! Your painting of that girl under water is stunning. How did you learn to do reflections & distortions of water like that? It reminds me of doing the art of chrome & the reflections of that as well. That stuff is really hard for me to do! As long as I've been doing art, you'd think I've have it down pat by now. I guess for some people it takes a little longer to learn how to do that sort of thing. Again thanks for sharing.
This is my first time watching your videos. This is great advice. I was also a teen mom, and have been getting more serious about my art business and youtube. I've been struggling on how to personify myself online and share my back story without sounding too depressing. But you've inspired me to embrace my not so perfect back story. Now I just need to figure out how to word everything. Subscribed!
I price all my art based upon square inches. $1200 for a 24x36 painting is 1.38 per square inch. If you base your prices on square inch then all your artwork regardless of size sells for the 1.38 per square inch. A 9 x 10 would be going for $125 (124.2). I only sold a few pieces though.
@disc999golfer999 Pricing by square inches works if your pieces are similarly sized. For a wide size range, smaller works end up disproportionately cheaper compared to larger ones. Pricing by perimeter multiplied by a factor gives more consistent pricing.
I enjoy creating art. But my story is full of twists and turns. Thank you for sharing. I have found a number of connections in this TH-cam video, which resonates with me.😊
I know you are right (about how people follow artists not necessarily art). It is easy for me to put my art out there but not so easy for me to put myself out there. I really don't like myself on camera. I never wanted to be famous, just make a good living from art. But I guess they go hand in hand. I need to work on getting comfortable in front of the camera. Thanks for the great video.
Trust me, art lovers like myself purchase art because we love it and not because of their social media following, or their personality. Just keep making art and share it with everyone.
@@contentviewer815 ok, thank you! Sometimes it's hard to see from the art lovers/buyers perspective. Maybe the challenge is just in finding the people that like my style of painting and the subject matter?
@@LisaSchulanerFineArt the challenge is to get many eyes to see your work and find something that resonates with them. Can I see your art? I'm currently not in the budget to buy more or have any more wall space in this tiny house of mine, but you never know?
@@LisaSchulanerFineArt Also I'm thinking of painting tiny paintings with my info on the back of the canvases and leaving them inside those free little art galleries in neighborhoods. It's much like those free little libraries, where you take a book and leave a book. You're gifting people a piece of your beautiful art and they may one day turn out to be customers, who knows? Also join as many art fairs as you can. I personally love and prefer the local, once a month, or once a week markets over the yearly expensive fairs. And join or start an art group where you can help each other set up at art fairs.
I love your videos so much, your personality makes me feel all gooey and warm hahahaha! This was very good advice, thank you! 💚and hilarious story, I can only imagine how scary that would've been! 😂
Thank you for that video. I don't know if this will add any value to my art, but at least it gave me some hints what to write on my bio page. I'm honestly struggeling for long with this 'me, myself and I'-stuff, but I also know I have to give visitors at least something 😅

Thanks for the clear explanation, it’s really helpful! I am a bit hesitant about the “sell yourself” part and sharing so much about yourself. Seems like you’re really putting yourself in a vulnerable state in front of a faceless audience (if we’re talking about the internet). I would advise to be a little selective in what you’re sharing.
Final comment for today! Kayla, you have to watch these videos of yours to understand WHAT your husband sees in you! YOU ARE, a gorgeous funny girl! ~ Oh My God! ~ Your facial expressions are the funniest! ~
"You will find the audience for you when you fully embrace your personality" This is so huge. It's hard to resist the feeling that you should be making the kind of art that you already see being successful, instead of doing what you actually enjoy...
I refused my grandfather's WWII shell casing from his funeral. I let my niece take it instead. Only because a homicide/suicide changed my family tree when I was 2. My maternal grandparents had to raise me & my siblings. I refuse to carry any guns but I'm not about taking away people's hunting guns etc. I have good memories of my grandfather who was there in WWII & saw the concentration camps. He said there should never be that much hate no matter what. He was a very good soul. I once almost had my pillow pet confiscated while traveling from Mexico.
Tbh I don't want to sell my art for crazy amount of money because I want it to be accessible to everyone who enjoys it. I'm also 41 and my looks are declining. So no one wants to see me put myself out there on Instagram or TH-cam. And I don't want to put myself out there just to be judged and ridiculed. I want my art to speak for itself. I also have a great collection of art because I loved the paintings, not because they were popular or personable, etc. And my most expensive piece that I purchased from a sweet, older man's studio in Santa Fe was only $700. I don't see myself buying art for a thousand dollars or more. Your game is only relevant in a wealthy, young, shallow people's market or those who need convincing because they're new to buying art. But then again people like that also buy prints from hobby lobby. I still like your art and vlogs though. And I will subscribe if you don't mind.

I’ve been getting yelled at for lowballing myself for decades. So now with a new body of work I’m pricing it accordingly.
For me it's not about low balling. It's about making art accessible to most. Everyone deserves to be able to buy the art they love.
I will tell my friend. He is pricing his art so low that he can barely pay for supplies.
Hehe girly, I think it’s time to up that price again. I think it’s the $3000 range ;) I love her and all the water surrounding her ! Beautiful ❤

And right there - you sold yourself (or should I say «upsold» if that is a word)👍 instantly I got an interest of you as an artist - which confirms exactly what you are trying to teach us viewers in this video! Great work! Subscribed immediatly👍
Awww, thank you so much! Glad I could be helpful and also interesting 😝❤️
This video just changed it all for me ❤ thank you so much Kayla. I have a similar testimony
I enjoyed hearing your perspective on this topic. 🥰💜 I’m big on the fact that we are the art we create. We are a big part of the value!
Thank you, this all made sense ❤
I love your work and everything you have taught me. I definitely red to show my face more and interact on my pages instead of just showing the final painting.
Oh my goodness, what a hilarious story... Thank you, you made me belly chuckle😂
That painting is amazing!
Excellent advice. Thank you!
Aww. I adore your personality and this video. Thank you for the tips.
Thank you so much 🥹
I just got back into doing some art, mainly as therapy and i spose thats what i was doing as a child too. I am posting it now, mainly for myself as encouragement to keep going but there is a bit of me that would love to make money from it, a bit of validation 🥺 thanks for the advice. Your painting is stunning and worth every penny
Wise words for such a young person. Thank you.
I think she is an old soul.😊
First time I've watched you. Awesome video and content. Honestly, truly valuable thoughts and tips. But...that closing story about Grandpa dead. Bullet gift. Nailed it for me. You, girl, had me belly laughing. Great stuff! I subscribed. Thanks for all the goodness!
The featured painting favored you some. Very beautiful.
To think the evil doers made this issue. Such a time suck but necessary lol I so enjoyed her story
That's so crazy; I saw your reel, but then forgot about your account and now I'm watching your video here on YT! I guess it's a destiny ;)
lol….i love your story time and your art is amazing
Thank you so much for this video, it genuinely resonated with me and helped me a lot with how "be an artist" in social media. I never understood social media and how to better use it to promote my work so I stopped but this video has truly changed my perspective and inspired me. Again, thank you so much, I hope you're having a lovely day.
I think you're absolutely right, but I'm in a situation where I don't think adding myself to my art pics is gonna help whatsoever, lol. It'll do the opposite. I'm now in my early 60s, so it's a a bit different than if I were in my 20s...but for the younger crowd, go for it
I am trying to paint arts I used to paint when I was a teenager, now I am old and I want to paint again. I think you inspire me now. thank you.
Same!
Insightful, thank you !!
Lol you're adorable. Thank you for your video, the info was great 🔥
Fantastic video you are an inspiration
This is my first time watching your videos. This is great advice. I was also a teen mom, and have been getting more serious about my art business and youtube. I've been struggling on how to personify myself online and share my back story without sounding too depressing. But you've inspired me to embrace my not so perfect back story. Now I just need to figure out how to word everything. Subscribed!
soooo goood
I price all my art based upon square inches. $1200 for a 24x36 painting is 1.38 per square inch. If you base your prices on square inch then all your artwork regardless of size sells for the 1.38 per square inch. A 9 x 10 would be going for $125 (124.2). I only sold a few pieces though.
@disc999golfer999 Pricing by square inches works if your pieces are similarly sized. For a wide size range, smaller works end up disproportionately cheaper compared to larger ones. Pricing by perimeter multiplied by a factor gives more consistent pricing.
@@sherion80? Lost me. Can you simplify for me 😂
@PamelaChangeUr-Life Research the linear pricing module - (length + width) x $ = your price. ie. 8+10=18 so 18×$10=$180 for an 8x10.
@@yopestevens1505 thanks I do really appreciate it
i loved the story at the end, definitely not stupid. crazy yes lol but not stupid.
Thank you for this Video. This was sooooooo helpful 💜💜💜💜
Prescient wonderful insights. ❤️
I enjoy creating art. But my story is full of twists and turns. Thank you for sharing. I have found a number of connections in this TH-cam video, which resonates with me.😊
Excellent tips and insights!
Amazing Thanks for such valuable advice!
Much gratitude and appreciation 😁😅
🥰🥰❤️
I love your videos so much, your personality makes me feel all gooey and warm hahahaha! This was very good advice, thank you! 💚and hilarious story, I can only imagine how scary that would've been! 😂
This is the best compliment ever, thank you!! 🥹🥹❤️ Yes, it was definitely one of the scarier moments in my life. 😅
Your Art Teacher in heaven is helping you from above.
Thank you for that video. I don't know if this will add any value to my art, but at least it gave me some hints what to write on my bio page. I'm honestly struggeling for long with this 'me, myself and I'-stuff, but I also know I have to give visitors at least something 😅
Very useful information in this video.
Makes a lot of sense
Leonardo newer had eny facebook or ader social media and he was and style are the most known artyst av hes time. He is anforgetebol because of hes art and style meny don know how he look like.
Melly sanders has an Amazing organic deoderant recipe! I use it all the time now it works for two days even! Please check it out I was amazed. Thank you for the value information! This is my gift back to you! Shuttle has great ideas for organic botanicals! This is not a commercial I don’t make any money from this I just wanted you to know about it because you mentioned deodorant lol! I love your channel and thank you again!
Shuttle? This is a follow-up to my last comment. The phone said shuttle I don’t know where it got Melly Sanders and shuttle confused lol. Plz see 1st. Comment. TY again! Keep Rockin!!!
Very inspiring, thank you
Final comment for today!
Great video Thank You!
Thanks love 🥰❤
Would you be able to make a video about how to share yourself? I'm a bit nervous but understand the importance of sharing ourselves.
Good Video knowledge
I refused my grandfather's WWII shell casing from his funeral. I let my niece take it instead. Only because a homicide/suicide changed my family tree when I was 2. My maternal grandparents had to raise me & my siblings. I refuse to carry any guns but I'm not about taking away people's hunting guns etc. I have good memories of my grandfather who was there in WWII & saw the concentration camps. He said there should never be that much hate no matter what. He was a very good soul.
I once almost had my pillow pet confiscated while traveling from Mexico.
Lolololol grandpa story priceless
Thank you ❤
How much time did you put in this piece? Do you price based on square inches?
Great video! Inspiring ❤
Hmm…I’m very good at painting, but I have very low self worth, so I don’t think this would work for me, but I do believe it’s good advice.
