as always a great job! i love the way you film...first of all let me say, i would trade my heavy chevy for that SCJ CAR in a split second! while we were racing round robin, we had great conversations waiting inline. the owner of the SCJ is a great guy and appreciates all cars...as for the gears in my HEAVY CHEVY they are 4:56..it has run a best of 13.00 at 105 and at the stanton fall race it went 13.18 at 102..i would like too get a set of the proper bias ply goodyears rather then my BFGs.the bias plys work much better.

@@lesliegreenberg6036 There is no way that any of the cars we see racing are stock but you have to think about the people that tested these cars back then were they legitimate who to say that one of the higher ups that worked for Ford would slide one of the journalists a nice little stack of cash to intentionally make say a chevelle 396 375 hp run a little slower. p.s I know I didn't punctuate so if there any smart ass this is for you.

@@deborahchesser7375 Hey, don't sweat the 54 and not remembering the Heavy Chevy, man. I had forgotten all about it. The ads brought back some memories I didn't even know I had ! That Heavy Chevy was cool for a couple of years, then kinda faded. I forgot 'em... nice to see those Torinos, too. I didn't like the looks, but knew they were some bad cars. Chevelles are just so beautiful, not many cars were nearly as good looking. Other muscle cars may have won on tracks, but it didn't matter. This was such a well designed and it's looks combined to make this a truly remarkable car. Still beautiful today. The Torino is still ugly. It's fast and has a lot going for it. It's still ugly. Interesting. A guy I went to college with had his dad's 72 Heavy Chevy, which was bought new. Red on blk, it had a factory 350 2bbl with 350 auto, p/s, pdiscs, AM radio, heater, and dual outside rear view mirrors as the only options. According to his dad, in 74 the engine lost oil pressure on the highway and before he could pull over it locked up. He had it towed to a dealer in southern Il where he requested a 400 sb put in it, with a 4bbl intake and Rochester carb, and also had the 2.73 open rear gears changed to 3.42s with posi. He paid for the upgrades. Later, the Turbo 350 A/T was fitted with a shift kit, high speed governor, and racing style sprag and clutches. The car was nearly undrivable in the rain, so it saw little mileage. I got to drive it just once. That trans hit so hard, even at light throttle, it was ridiculous. In fact, the thing toasted 2 ten bolt rear ends before he added a 12 bolt and a custom driveshaft from Chicago Driveline. Polyurethane bushings replaced the stock rubber in the rear suspension, and SS springs were added with gas shocks. With a 9.5 slick, it runs mid 13s which really isn't fast, but sure feels so!

Sounds like a real mild mannered motor… Mid 13’s is smokin fast for a stock(ish) SBC… Sounds like a dialed in build!

My high school car was a 1972 chevelle, 307, AT, orange with a black vinyl top and black interior. Bought it in 1988 at 16 for $1200 from an actual little old lady who was the original owner. Looked like the Torino broke traction at the second round start. May have made the driver start a little softer in round three...as almost all of us would. It is great to see the cars, the races and to learn about them. My hat's off to the car owners, and your video format. While I am a GM guy, you measure your accomplishments by the greatness of your competitors. That's why it still hurts me to see Ford name an SUV a Mustang. GM and MOPAR already pulled stunts like that mostly in the 80s.

In my opinion these races were all about the launch- the Torino’s weight ( heavier and being nose- heavy- I owned some so I’m well aware) and poor weight transfer, and the chevelles auto trans made all the difference. The 429 was obviously more powerful but not enough to overcome the starting line deficit. I love those Torino’s ( I actually had 2) but they don’t make great ‘stock’ drag cars.

I believe in 1972 the term, “sport coupe” was used to describe the hardtop. The SS that year was based on the Malibu Sport Coupe. The next video will feature some odd ones... 1968 AMC AMX 390 vs a 1970 Pontiac GT-37 with a Ram Air III 400. 👍 I’m not sure what will be after that, but probably some sort of MOPAR.

I had a friend that also bought one of these right off the show-room floor. These were sold more-so for a family man than a Hotrodder. Ugly Chevy green, with an ugly, green interior (You can tell I like green, huh, lol) with the Big Block 400cu, automatic trans with a bench seat. First time I ever saw a Chevelle with "Heavy Chevy" written on it. I too was like, "What The Heck is that?" But surprisingly, the darn thing was pretty fast for what it was. Especially after I tweaked that Quadrajet 4bbl for him to where the secondaires would open-up as soon as he stomped it to the floor. He bought crapped his pants the first time he drove it after I worked on it after a bit of "tweaking" just a few things to get a little more performance out of that 402 cu. Then, being a family man, wanted me to put the Quad back like it was factory, because he said it would burn too much gas with him wanting to stomp it to the floor all the time, lol. Yeah, he was married and whooped too!

Lots of people de-smogged those mid 70s motors by simply taking off all the smog equipment and put better pistons/heads on them. You can really wake up those motors if you do that, so that could still be a “factory” Chevy under the hood, and they could have just taken off all the smog equipment to give it a little more pep. That and the posi, but people back in the day used to do that stuff so I’d still call it a “period correct” car, probably not a factory car though.

My 71 CJ Torino was stock stock stock with the factory Quadra jet carb and hydraulic cam. That motor would pull 7200 rpm in top gear and not fall of the cam ! It was clocked at 162 mph at the old California speed way back in the 70"s...Man I miss that car ! ( it came with 3:54 gears ) and had L-60-14's on the back...

What was the difference between the 68-70 Thunderbird 429's? You could tell they were factory more powerful than a "Ford" 429. The Thunderbird 429 had way more spirit. At least for street use.

The Torino is Unibody. The reason they might be heavy is because The engine is all cast iron and the C6 or Top loader 4 speed transmissions were really heavy not to mention 9inch Ford rear ends are pretty heavy. But I am sure the Torino gets pretty good weight transfer.

I would just like to say that Torino ran like it should have ran.
There is no way the 402 is running that little camshaft. Talking .398 intake .430 exhaust lift. Duration at 193 & 203 @ .050 lift. With the stock compression at 8.5 with 2.06 & 1.72 valves. Maybe the 4.56 gears and some tweaking within the rules help a lot. Love the car though.

2 of my friends in 1982 each found orange scj torino,s 1970 both had drag packs. They were 3 digits apart on the vin and There keys were usable in each others cars. They bought them 2 months apart and were both originated in massachussetts . One was in eastern part of the state the other on the west side. They used to steal each others cars as a prank. Both cars were in pristine condition when purchased. 6 mos. After the second one was bought, it was dead in my friends driveway with spun rod bearing and he was doing a reverse burn out to impress some hot girls walking by and smashed it into a phone pole. The trunk had a big v shape and was tied closed with a piece of rope. Someone offered a small sum of money and it dissapeared forever. First one survived very well and was sold 2 yrs later for some big money
