That's pretty ridiculous. I'm poor as hell and we usually get most of our stuff covered by insurance. My friend has cystic fibrosis and he gets pills that totally replace all of his treatments and they cost like $20,000 a month, but the insurance company covers it despite his family being pretty poor. Paying more should get you more, not less.

an international student living in UK. I paid 200 pounds for 4 years of NHS insurance. it covers so much even medicine that costs more than 100 pounds all cost flat fee... like 10 pounds....US can learn from UK and NHS

As much as they find ways to screw customers over, they find just as many ways to screw providers over. Just 1 claim, I filed my 5th appeal to get paid, this morning, because they keep coming up with reasons not to pay that aren't even a thing.
This is why universal healthcare is a MUST in the United States. I live in Canada, and a lot of us shake our heads at the for-profit nature of American healthcare. It's completely possible to have both private options (health insurance) for those that can afford it, and public options (single-payer) for most individuals that are unable to afford thousands every year for world-class healthcare.
In BC Canada we have something called MSPs Medical Services Premium where we pay $900 (it's being halved then eliminated) for the year and we get all our necessary healthcare paid for

You're not shopping for the cheapest, most efficient, highest quality at the lowest price when you hand off the cost to the insurance company and ignore the myriad of adding up costs until they all come back in the form of the insurance bill. There is a reason doctors are now starting to only take cash only for the routine services they provide rather than insurance, because they've found that they can cut out so many of the inefficiency costs that dealing with insurance and lack of shopping for the materials they need produces.
I'm an Economics major and bear in mind that on a weekly basis I have to crunch numbers and examine how money flows from one entity to another and you start to notice that the United States is one big insurance company it's super sad.
Before Obamacare, my wife had a policy that was $130/month w/ a $2500 deductible, then it was 100% covered.That plan is now "illegal". My insurance used to be $200 for a $1000 deductible now I pay $450 for $1500 and higher co-pays. Thanks Obummer.
Therein lies the problem: insurance companies prefer large groups that pay their bills, so the government & larger companies have the greatest policies. The biggest factors that affect insurance profits is credit rating, changing insurance companies, false claims, fraud. Largest of these? Payment. If they can be assured payment by you, then you're a much more predictable asset than those in smaller pools who may not pay their premium. In large companies, that risk is hedged, allowing them less risk.
As someone that use to work in claims they really could care less about their consumers, like driftor mention they will find any reason too not pay even if it's bs. And from me experience from that job all the ppl that don't want socialized healthcare just wait until you really have go to the hospital and see how huge that bill and terrible the service will be.

My Mother's work just so happens to have the best benefits you can think of (she works for Charter Communications), it includes family dental and health insurance, and almost every single cable/premium service. We also get the fastest internet speeds they can provide for free. Watching this video made me realize how fortunate I am to have a good health insurance plan.
I work in agency on the property & casualty side of things (So auto and home basically), and it's hard trying to advocate for the stuff that the company we work for sometimes. From the little things like rate hikes that the company takes to one claim making your rates go up, or worse, it's really disheartening. It's hard to stand behind a product you don't believe in.

For me it´s really mind blowing to hear about all of this crazy problems with insurances (especially health insurance), because I´m from Germany and here the whole health care system is completely different. I have never experienced these kind of problems and I am truly glad that we have a different approach to health care in Germany, so that I don´t have to worry about health insurance.
Here in Brazil we have the SUS, is a healthcare system that cover everyone but just is good enough in places that are industrialized enough to have these clinics and aren't overpopulated.

Health care systems such as medicine should not be commoditized. There should not be a profit motive for hospitals(in fact, the US is one of the only major countries to have such a thing) and insurance should not be so counter-intuitive that it is in their best interests to not help you. Full stop.
I am an actuary... you pay those prices based on the calculations actuaries make on past data to determine the possibility of an outcome occurring. If the possibility is high like under 25 year old people in a car accident then you pay more. If the possibility is low then you pay a lower amount like people over the age of 25 have a smaller chance of having an accident and so they pay less.
The only answer is to remove profit from healthcare. That's it. It's only way. As long as greed impacts the way we treat healthcare we'll always end up in the situations you've described.
They do deserve to be compensated. Removing profit from the health system does not preclude people from making a living in that system. Do people not take home a paycheck from providers whom draw from Medicaid and Medicare? Drift0r very correctly points out that those systems already in place far outpace private alternatives. Medicare for all is the only answer. Just look to Canada and the UK for successful examples.
I work in healthcare. You always want to get Long Term Care insurance. it's specifically for when you have to put someone in a nursing home. I've seen it save so many people from bad bad situations.
My family recently switched to health insurance covered in Mexico because the insurance my dad was getting through his job was going to have a massive increase in rates per family member. Can't say I've had an issue there, things are relatively cheap as well as the Mexican peso is devalued so much against the US dollar.

Same! I tore my ACL and i had to go in for prehab (rehab before surgery) and after a new year starts you are supposed to get a new cycle of 21 rehab appointments, but they counted the first 6 i had to do before surgery. Ughhh
insurance companies essentially exist to try and get as much money from you as they can while trying as hard as they can to not cover anything so they don't have to pay out any money.

It seems so crazy to me that you have to pay so much for health insurance! Here in New Zealand we have universal healthcare coupled with health insurance if you need to cover more specialty incidents or you just want to fast track your treatment. I was diagnosed with cancer about five years ago and I literally had all my scans, tests, surgeries, chemo treatments and radiotherapy treatments completely covered. Do you know how much it cost my family to get me treated? $0. We even got fuel, parking and food vouchers! Now I know what people are going to bring up. Tax. How much do I pay right now? 17.5% max with an effective tax rate between 10.5% and 15.5%. Do you know what the highest tax rate is in New Zealand? 33% if you earn over $70,000 with the effective tax rate coming out between 20% and 33%. I pay about $600 in tax through my salary every month and that covers everything. The whole lot. Not just healthcare. If I was to look at Driftor's health insurance costs in the NZD currency, that would be about $935. I can't even fathom paying that much.
I have the gold plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield through my employer. I've never had a single issue with them not covering something I needed. And trust me, I have to use my insurance way more often the average person does. They've never not covered a procedure, never not covered a medication, never not covered a hospital visit/stay, never refused to reimburse me for out-of-pocket spending. I've just plain never had a single problem with them. In fact.....almost every time I go into a medical facility, they tell me that I have excellent health coverage and that I should be very thankful for that. So im sorry you've had issues Drift0r, but I never have with them. I do have my problems with health insurance companies in general though. Oh trust me I do lol
Watching this, I'm very happy i live in the netherlands. You can go to the general practitioner as much as you want, you always pay 60€ a month with no additional costs for surgeries and stuff.

Yeah I'm pretty much terrified to go to the hospital for the exact reasons you just listed. I think the last time I went to the hospital or saw a doctor was back when I was still a teenager and covered by my parents health care. I haven't seen a doctor or been to the hospital in probably 7-8 years now lol and unless I legit break a bone or I might be legit dying I don't plan on it/rather take my chances.

That's why i am so grateful for NHS, because from my experience i have received top tier care. Yes it has problems but i as a patient have not experienced them. The situation with lack of funding will always exist because elements in the NHS will want larger funds so they can personally benefit from.

Vehicle insurance is a nightmare. They want to know everything you're going to be using the vehicle for, are you only using your car for work only, or socially, are you going on holiday with it? What job do you have? Are you going to have another job soon? For gods sake I just wanna ride my motorbike. I'm not sure what I'm gonna be using it for. Then after paying they start asking questions and find out I'm using it socially too? Well you gotta pay another £50 for that.
At around 12 minutes in this video, that is very true if you live off the government or get a minor amount of assistance you get a better health coverage, versus being a working citizen where you get poor coverage, our system is very wrong and corrupt in my opinion!
Please don't ever think that you're "getting" anything when paying for insurance. You pay to be protected and to avoid financial devastation. It's called transference of risk. Most of us could never pay (out of pocket) of what the typical auto/health claim cost therefore we pay the insurance company to take on the risk. In regards to gambling, I'd probably look up , "the law of large numbers" principal. That's a better explanation of what you're talking about. ✌🏻
Hey Driftor, i've always heard that the US healthcare system was fu*ked up but i had no idea! I live in switzerland and pay around 450 CHF (+/- 500$) a month for my healthcare, which is a lot for me but i' glad that i can pay for it. The thing in switzerland is that it (almost) doesn't matter what happens to me, my insurance will cover it! If i were to need a surgery that would cost me 10'000$, i would have to pay 300$ + 10% of those 10'000 (so 1'300$ in total) for an otherwise 10k surgery!!! It's mind-boggling to me how the US is unable to develop a similar system. Listening to your stories really pissed me off! I wish you good luck for your future with your healthcare problems.

If I'm not mistaken, the Swiss system was what the ACA was originally modeled after. That would have before it was butchered into something that barely resembled it at all, by those who prefer bureaucracy and filling their own pockets over trying to help their fellow man (aside from the model source statement, this is all my opinion/speculation. I don't claim it as fact, because I have little/no proof for it in the first place. Just a hypothesis that I likely won't test).
I hear you Driftor. Let me tell you my situation. I have a hernia and my insurance doesn't cover the surgery cause it's not life threatening. So I've lived in severe pain for months cause I can't afford the operation out of pocket
Last resort you could move to Canada, everyone gets the same insurance and depending on how much you make determines how much you pay. At most you'll pay 69$ a month that covers mostly everything except meds, chiropractic and dental.
How exactly does someone buy drugs from Canada illegally? Doesn't an imported product like that have to go through some sort of screening process or customs or something?
Yes, he just calls one of his friends that regularely goes to Canada, give him the money to get the meds, and once he comes back, only a few papers needs to be filled. Doing this is way much cheaper than actually getting the meds from a pharmacy in the US. (We did that so we would be able to get my grandmother's meds, as where I live, 1g of one of her many meds would cost all up to 100dollars and she has no insurence)
man I got hit by a car a little over a year ago (I was on my bike). luckily I wasn't hurt much (I looked really bad after getting hit but no internal bleeding/breakages) however my bike was shredded. The police report said that the person ran the red light and hit me. So it was all their fault and their car insurance has to cover my medical and bike bills. well at first they told me they wouldn't pay for anything because the person who hit me claimed I was j-walking and therefore broke the law, making me the cause of the accident. Since they told me to send in the police report prior to this, it infuriated me knowing that they had the police report saying otherwise, but didn't consult it before not paying out. I told them about that and they apologized and payed me the money i spent in hospital/doctor fees and a new bicycle.... about 6 months after the incident fighting me the whole time. Since I wasn't harmed much I didn't sue and the payout wasn't that large in the scope of things, yet I probably wasted more money (by not working, hourly job) than I got from their final check. I felt like I was dealing with a legalized scam artist, and this was one of the major car companies we see on TV (not gonna say their company tho)
Okay so Drift0r I gotta talk economics with you, I'm not exactly a Dr. in economics but so healthcare is split into 3 basic services, the medicine creation and distribution, the doctors that work on you and prescribe said medicine, and the coverage companies. In a free market, this has huge competition of various companies to provide cheaper insurance with better rates and more coverage, better competition to create and distribute and sell medicine cheaper, and doctors to offer their services at cheaper prices and rates. This is because in a free market, to get a profit you must attract the consumer and the consumer is attracted by the best quality service/resource, at the cheapest price. A lot of people are healthy so there isn't a high need for insurance for them. The appeal for a healthy individual to get health insurance, is in case of an accident. This causes various companies to be willing to drop prices so that healthy people have an incentive to purchase it. I could explain this more but I think you get the point. Socialism and socialized healthcare, destroys healthcare

My Mother's work just so happens to have the best benefits you can think of (she works for Charter Communications), it includes family dental and health insurance, and almost every single cable/premium service. We also get the fastest internet speeds they can provide for free. Watching this video made me realize how fortunate I am to have a good health insurance plan.
I work in agency on the property & casualty side of things (So auto and home basically), and it's hard trying to advocate for the stuff that the company we work for sometimes. From the little things like rate hikes that the company takes to one claim making your rates go up, or worse, it's really disheartening. It's hard to stand behind a product you don't believe in.
As a Canadian I find it hard to understand how the healthcare/health insurance can be so bad for you guys. I've literally never had to worry about this stuff in my whole life.
If you want an answer on how to lower health care and insurance costs, get government out of health care and insurance. Any time government puts taxpayer dollars into something like say college, it gets more and more expensive. This is an observable trend over the past twenty years. IMO Government should do as the founders intended and protect it's citizens and their rights, and leave businesses alone to do their own thing.
The type of insurance your Grandmother has is called Long Term Care (LTC for short) and it's not really sold because it's generally not profitable, and (more or less) a bad purchase as your family has had to experience. As someone who works for an insurance company, I can't help but wonder what would happen if they were run as a non-profit instead of a for-profit...

I know a 70 year old man that has worked at my gas station for over 20 years to keep insurance for his diabetes and everything associated with that.
For me it´s really mind blowing to hear about all of this crazy problems with insurances (especially health insurance), because I´m from Germany and here the whole health care system is completely different. I have never experienced these kind of problems and I am truly glad that we have a different approach to health care in Germany, so that I don´t have to worry about health insurance.
Here in Brazil we have the SUS, is a healthcare system that cover everyone but just is good enough in places that are industrialized enough to have these clinics and aren't overpopulated.

Health care systems such as medicine should not be commoditized. There should not be a profit motive for hospitals(in fact, the US is one of the only major countries to have such a thing) and insurance should not be so counter-intuitive that it is in their best interests to not help you. Full stop.

I am an actuary... you pay those prices based on the calculations actuaries make on past data to determine the possibility of an outcome occurring. If the possibility is high like under 25 year old people in a car accident then you pay more. If the possibility is low then you pay a lower amount like people over the age of 25 have a smaller chance of having an accident and so they pay less.
The only answer is to remove profit from healthcare. That's it. It's only way. As long as greed impacts the way we treat healthcare we'll always end up in the situations you've described.

They do deserve to be compensated. Removing profit from the health system does not preclude people from making a living in that system. Do people not take home a paycheck from providers whom draw from Medicaid and Medicare? Drift0r very correctly points out that those systems already in place far outpace private alternatives. Medicare for all is the only answer. Just look to Canada and the UK for successful examples.
I work in healthcare. You always want to get Long Term Care insurance. it's specifically for when you have to put someone in a nursing home. I've seen it save so many people from bad bad situations.
My family recently switched to health insurance covered in Mexico because the insurance my dad was getting through his job was going to have a massive increase in rates per family member. Can't say I've had an issue there, things are relatively cheap as well as the Mexican peso is devalued so much against the US dollar.

I just graduated a year ago and started working as a Civil Engineer and I’m super glad that my company has really good health insurance. That’s one of the main reasons I push petiole to go to college and get a good job in a good company. The benefits are worth it

Same! I tore my ACL and i had to go in for prehab (rehab before surgery) and after a new year starts you are supposed to get a new cycle of 21 rehab appointments, but they counted the first 6 i had to do before surgery. Ughhh
insurance companies essentially exist to try and get as much money from you as they can while trying as hard as they can to not cover anything so they don't have to pay out any money.

It seems so crazy to me that you have to pay so much for health insurance! Here in New Zealand we have universal healthcare coupled with health insurance if you need to cover more specialty incidents or you just want to fast track your treatment. I was diagnosed with cancer about five years ago and I literally had all my scans, tests, surgeries, chemo treatments and radiotherapy treatments completely covered. Do you know how much it cost my family to get me treated? $0. We even got fuel, parking and food vouchers!
Now I know what people are going to bring up. Tax. How much do I pay right now? 17.5% max with an effective tax rate between 10.5% and 15.5%. Do you know what the highest tax rate is in New Zealand? 33% if you earn over $70,000 with the effective tax rate coming out between 20% and 33%.
I pay about $600 in tax through my salary every month and that covers everything. The whole lot. Not just healthcare. If I was to look at Driftor's health insurance costs in the NZD currency, that would be about $935. I can't even fathom paying that much.
I have the gold plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield through my employer. I've never had a single issue with them not covering something I needed. And trust me, I have to use my insurance way more often the average person does. They've never not covered a procedure, never not covered a medication, never not covered a hospital visit/stay, never refused to reimburse me for out-of-pocket spending. I've just plain never had a single problem with them. In fact.....almost every time I go into a medical facility, they tell me that I have excellent health coverage and that I should be very thankful for that. So im sorry you've had issues Drift0r, but I never have with them. I do have my problems with health insurance companies in general though. Oh trust me I do lol

Watching this, I'm very happy i live in the netherlands. You can go to the general practitioner as much as you want, you always pay 60€ a month with no additional costs for surgeries and stuff.

Yeah I'm pretty much terrified to go to the hospital for the exact reasons you just listed. I think the last time I went to the hospital or saw a doctor was back when I was still a teenager and covered by my parents health care. I haven't seen a doctor or been to the hospital in probably 7-8 years now lol and unless I legit break a bone or I might be legit dying I don't plan on it/rather take my chances.
Brad I 100% know what you are talking about. I have 3 jobs, and one of them is just because I get Health Coverage at part time (20 hours a week)... I have 2 jobs to get money from, and another job just so I can pay for health insurance basically... Its ridiculous.

That's why i am so grateful for NHS, because from my experience i have received top tier care. Yes it has problems but i as a patient have not experienced them. The situation with lack of funding will always exist because elements in the NHS will want larger funds so they can personally benefit from.
I remember the hailstorm in Carrollton it damaged my roof and window the insurance actually came threw and covered everything

Vehicle insurance is a nightmare. They want to know everything you're going to be using the vehicle for, are you only using your car for work only, or socially, are you going on holiday with it? What job do you have? Are you going to have another job soon? For gods sake I just wanna ride my motorbike. I'm not sure what I'm gonna be using it for. Then after paying they start asking questions and find out I'm using it socially too? Well you gotta pay another £50 for that.
The solution is, work for the state or government be a drone for 15ish years and retire with a pension and crazy good benefits.

All this is so true. Same thing happened to me with medical. Even with motor insurance I've been screwed over for something that wasn't even my fault.
At around 12 minutes in this video, that is very true if you live off the government or get a minor amount of assistance you get a better health coverage, versus being a working citizen where you get poor coverage, our system is very wrong and corrupt in my opinion!
Please don't ever think that you're "getting" anything when paying for insurance. You pay to be protected and to avoid financial devastation. It's called transference of risk. Most of us could never pay (out of pocket) of what the typical auto/health claim cost therefore we pay the insurance company to take on the risk. In regards to gambling, I'd probably look up , "the law of large numbers" principal. That's a better explanation of what you're talking about. ✌🏻
Hey Driftor, i've always heard that the US healthcare system was fu*ked up but i had no idea! I live in switzerland and pay around 450 CHF (+/- 500$) a month for my healthcare, which is a lot for me but i' glad that i can pay for it. The thing in switzerland is that it (almost) doesn't matter what happens to me, my insurance will cover it! If i were to need a surgery that would cost me 10'000$, i would have to pay 300$ + 10% of those 10'000 (so 1'300$ in total) for an otherwise 10k surgery!!! It's mind-boggling to me how the US is unable to develop a similar system. Listening to your stories really pissed me off! I wish you good luck for your future with your healthcare problems.

America doesnt develop a similar system because they hate everything that envolves equitative wealth distribution.Its a "Comunist" thing.
If I'm not mistaken, the Swiss system was what the ACA was originally modeled after. That would have before it was butchered into something that barely resembled it at all, by those who prefer bureaucracy and filling their own pockets over trying to help their fellow man
(aside from the model source statement, this is all my opinion/speculation. I don't claim it as fact, because I have little/no proof for it in the first place. Just a hypothesis that I likely won't test).

I hear you Driftor. Let me tell you my situation. I have a hernia and my insurance doesn't cover the surgery cause it's not life threatening. So I've lived in severe pain for months cause I can't afford the operation out of pocket
Save your receipts, document everything, take photos. Read your policies. Don't assume coverage until you've verified it.

Last resort you could move to Canada, everyone gets the same insurance and depending on how much you make determines how much you pay. At most you'll pay 69$ a month that covers mostly everything except meds, chiropractic and dental.

How exactly does someone buy drugs from Canada illegally? Doesn't an imported product like that have to go through some sort of screening process or customs or something?
Yes, he just calls one of his friends that regularely goes to Canada, give him the money to get the meds, and once he comes back, only a few papers needs to be filled. Doing this is way much cheaper than actually getting the meds from a pharmacy in the US. (We did that so we would be able to get my grandmother's meds, as where I live, 1g of one of her many meds would cost all up to 100dollars and she has no insurence)

man I got hit by a car a little over a year ago (I was on my bike). luckily I wasn't hurt much (I looked really bad after getting hit but no internal bleeding/breakages) however my bike was shredded. The police report said that the person ran the red light and hit me. So it was all their fault and their car insurance has to cover my medical and bike bills. well at first they told me they wouldn't pay for anything because the person who hit me claimed I was j-walking and therefore broke the law, making me the cause of the accident. Since they told me to send in the police report prior to this, it infuriated me knowing that they had the police report saying otherwise, but didn't consult it before not paying out. I told them about that and they apologized and payed me the money i spent in hospital/doctor fees and a new bicycle.... about 6 months after the incident fighting me the whole time. Since I wasn't harmed much I didn't sue and the payout wasn't that large in the scope of things, yet I probably wasted more money (by not working, hourly job) than I got from their final check. I felt like I was dealing with a legalized scam artist, and this was one of the major car companies we see on TV (not gonna say their company tho)

Okay so Drift0r I gotta talk economics with you, I'm not exactly a Dr. in economics but so healthcare is split into 3 basic services, the medicine creation and distribution, the doctors that work on you and prescribe said medicine, and the coverage companies. In a free market, this has huge competition of various companies to provide cheaper insurance with better rates and more coverage, better competition to create and distribute and sell medicine cheaper, and doctors to offer their services at cheaper prices and rates. This is because in a free market, to get a profit you must attract the consumer and the consumer is attracted by the best quality service/resource, at the cheapest price. A lot of people are healthy so there isn't a high need for insurance for them. The appeal for a healthy individual to get health insurance, is in case of an accident. This causes various companies to be willing to drop prices so that healthy people have an incentive to purchase it. I could explain this more but I think you get the point. Socialism and socialized healthcare, destroys healthcare
