    I’ve heard a lot workarounds and excuses for the 4K 60p crop, but not anyone testing or showing the 1080 60p footage, I’d like to see that proposed as a solution. I shoot the a7c and mix 4k 24p and 1080 60p all the time, no one has ever said anything about a difference in quality between shots.

    Totally agree, Zac. Not a deal breaker for me at all. Coming from the Fuji X-T4, I'm used to an additional crop in 4k 60 and I tend to shoot slow mo a little closer anyway so it works for me. And as you said, you basically get a larger focal range. I use the 16-35 and with the crop I can get up to around 50. Great video, love those B-Roll shots 🙌

  • @4Dcruz
    @4Dcruz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Totally agree. I'm probably going to shoot most things in super 35 mode anyway at 24p/30p because it helps with rolling shutter. To me the best thing about full frame over aps-c is the low light performance--which you'll still benefit from. It's totally just a mental block where people need to think differently about lens selection. Most cinema cameras use low megapixel sensors and obviously look amazing... so a crop of 33 is still going to have plenty of detail. Not a hinderance, just something to get used to. Great shots btw!

    Well said Zac. Totally agree. I'm not sure that anybody cares less about the 4k 60 crop than me. However, I can see how it would be an issue for somebody that is doing a lot of running and gunning (like maybe a wedding videographer). Most of the things I do are planned out so I just bring the lenses I know I will need. Also, like you said, the crop can actually be an advantage in some situations (most of my slow-mo is at a closer focal length as well).
    I knew about the crop and rolling shutter before I got the A7IV. The rolling shutter hasn't been an issue yet, but if I am in a situation where I am concerned about it, I can go to 4k 60 or even 1080p (which looks great) to get the faster readout. Basically, just work around the limitations like I've always done. Even the next model in 3 or 4 years will have some give and takes. Just get the camera and have fun!

    • @ZacSopak
      @ZacSopak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said Brian! Couldn't agree more. There's always going to be some sort of trade off with cameras. Those limitations just force us into more creative problem solving.

  • @ruthanneswanson

    So it only crops at 60fps though which would mainly be used for slow motion right? If I wanted to shoot at normal speed it wouldn’t crop would it? I’d still get full frame 4k? I’m kind of confused by this. Thank you great video dude!!

    • @ZacSopak
      @ZacSopak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 4K 60fps mode FORCES you use a crop. You can still shoot with the entire full frame of the camera in the other 4K fps modes. However, you can manually activate a crop if you decide to do so. For example, I will sometimes activate a crop in 4K 24fps if I'm shooting with a prime lens and can't get closer to my subject. The quality still looks great and it gives me more versatility with my wider lenses.
      There are loads of videos that talk about this "hack". Some people will use clear image zoom on top of the crop to get an even tighter field of view. Hope that helps.

    Food for thought: I shot a wedding a couple months ago on a a7cii with the apsc Tamron 17-70 2.8. worked like a charm! I just think of it as a „better“ a6600 which I upgraded from in terms of 4k60 and the ability to shoot in 10bit. Maybe I’ll get the Sony 16-55G 2.8 for gigs like this.
    The 16-28 2.8 ist enough range for me and the 24-70 isn’t wide enough in crop mode. So working the crop mode with a usable apsc lens is the gamechanger for me. :)

    I wonder if Nikon could drop an (Z9) expeed 7 into a midrange camera and put the 60p no crop in. They have no cinema line to compromise. The hybrid shooter said he doubted sony would allow nikon to use its sensors like this. Im not so sure that scenario could happen - itll be interesting to see if they'll do it because they now have all the tech to make a disrupter product like the A73 was.
    Regarding the crop in my workflow:
    I don't use or have the inclination to use a gimbal. So for interior establishing shots I go 20mm 50p and slow down half speed on a 25p timeline to take any bumps out of my push-in clip. So the A74 would force me into 1080 for that clip. Not a huge deal as Im 100% social media.

    For the sensor resolution it’s efficient otherwise it would over heat quickly. Then everyone would be complaining about the over heating issue. People just complain.

    I got the A7IV and really like it. I have another channel where I do Car Audio related videos where I fabricate stuff using a router table etc and the 4k 60 for me is a must, I have the 24-70mm G Master Lens and to get the 4k 60Fps at a 24mm type full frame I need to use a 16mm lens to compensate for it but I'm cool with that. I'm a self funded TH-camr so for me this is a great camera cs using my smartphone with limited shutter speed and ISO control. I record indoors like 80% of the time. thank you so much for making this video. 😁👊

    Rolling shutter & crop I could live… but.. I ended up sending it back & bought the A7S3. I can use my A7C for photos. One day I’d like to replace the A7C with an A74.

    Possibly looking to switch from the Fuji XT3 with a 15-55mm 2.8 and 50-140mm 2.8. I do LOVE my Fuji and with my small rig cage can get pretty nice 40k60 and even 24fps out of the camera 4.2.0 10bit internal. I'm just maybe looking for slightly larger MP in the photo department and If I can off load my Fuji I could pretty much be an even swap for the A7iv with 24-105mm F4 OSS lens. I Don't shoot tons of wild life or sports, more of travel, walking around camping hiking stuff. I do love the versatility of the 24-105 as I've had that for canon back in the day. As far as upgrading goes do you think it would be a worthy upgrade? I don't have any issue with F-Log but S-Log 3 seems great and so does the IBIS and Optical Steady shot would eliminate some post processing workflow plus bump me up from the 24mp of the Fuji APSC sensor. How it also uses upscaled 7k is pretty sweet and If I NEEDED a long lens for a project I could always just rent something.
