Great comparison. Probably one of the best comparisons between these two cameras I've seen. Others have left out details that are important for considering these two cameras. You covered them all. Well done.
Thank you so much. That is so nice of you. I try my best to keep in every detail, but it does become a little tricky sometimes. So thanks for the encouragement.
You said you have to multiply the aperture by 1.5, but that's exactly right... If a FF lens is f/1.2 and on an APSC camera, it will still take in f/1.2 worth of light. The only thing ehat would be different is ghe depth of field... DoF needs to be multiplied by 1.5.
I own both... I love the FX30 body better, but I prefer the footage that comes out of my a74. They are probably identical in 4k 60, but in 4k 24 the A74 pulls away for sure. When a new video focused camera comes the FX30 will be the first to go
lol You said when you shoot in 4k60 on the fx30 you don’t have to deal with a crop. Yes you do. It’s a crop sensor camera. You get a crop no matter what. You have the exact same crop shooting 4k60 as you do on the a7iv and then you have an insane 3x crop in 4k120
Great video! Thank you so much. It’s only now I’m realizing in the FX30, you only have the electronic screen to view what you are filming. Should I cancel my purchase?
Great video! I'm really beginning to love the authentic vibe of your channel! I use the 14mmGM on FX30 to shoot with and it is amazing. The last video I shot, I forgot to turn of 120fps so the angle was so tight, but when I turned it off, it's the perfect vlogging and cinematic combo. My new run and gun set!
Hey Francois, that sounds like you have a great setup. I can't tell you how many times I forget to set a setting and the get home to find out I set something wrong. I need a checklist like pilots have to fly. Thanks so much for your kind words
Recording in 4K DCI helps with rolling shutter. FX30 works better with the A7 IV than the FX3 does in terms of sharpness. For this reason the FX6 may be a better choice when you need that rolling shutter performance, but you can always use 6K raw to get out the rolling shutter with an FX9.. What we are calling 8K is not 8K. 1K is 1000, but it could be binary value 1024, but it's in 16:9 aspect ratio so 1K is 1080 because both 1920 and 1080 are perfect numbers that divide by the perfect number 12. Thus 1K is 1920*1080, or 2MP. This means that when you put together four 1080p to get one 4K, and to do this process again you have to take four 4K monitors together, which is 16 1k monitors or 16K, not 8K. 8K is as similar ration to what 2K/1440p is to 1080p, 8K is 3K height. At that megapixel count you get diminishing returns.
Fantastic production quality here. Very thorough as well, just missing a low light comparison since that's the biggest factor for me when deciding between these two cameras (I often shoot events/clubs/parties and other extreme low light settings where I'm often at ISO 6400 and above)
@@thefilmalliance absolutely. I think it's very relevant between the two cameras; you need good low light to even think about shooting at 4k/120, and if the FX30 suffers in that area it defeats the purpose of having it, for me.
Nice comparison, coach! I think I would go for the FX 30 not just because of the price, but because I want to get into cinematography someday, and I believe the FX 30 would be a great starting point!
nice breakdown, thanks for your professional opinion, still not sure which way to go as you always think 'what if I do want to take some photos at a later stage'
Je suis dans cette même incertitude… c’est un budget et je fais principalement de la vidéo mais je voyage beaucoup donc je dirais 80% vidéo et 20% photo 😅
Thank you for this vid, ive been eyeballing the FX3 to replace my A7IV but after watching this I feel confident that I should simply add a FX30 to my kit and I really have it all. Bless. Keep killing ish too.
I’m trying to make this decision right now and am really struggling with it. I want both! I don’t know what to do. My heart says A7iv but something about that FX30 is drawing me in.
My recommendation is to wait and keep researching until you feel confident in your decision. Consider how you will be using it and which will suit your needs long term better
Hey I’m really late to this but I’ve been planning on buying my first camera, I’m planning on primarily going into car videography, and maybe doing some photography as well but not as much, and then for my personal projects maybe some cinematography and filmmaking, but the main things I’d need is a camera that can shoot lowlight very well, and can shoot rolling shots from a car. I’ve been told about the Fx30, and then I was also looking into the Fx3 for the full frame because I feel like it’d be simpler when finding/buying and choosing lenses, as well as I heard full frame is better for low light. Then on the other hand my largest inspiration used a A7S III for most of their work… so I was heavily leaning towards the A7S III, but then now I was just reading up on some stuff and saw many people recommending the Fx30 and the A7 IV, and now I’m even more confused on what to get… would you happen to have any advice? Which would you recommend based on what I described I’d be using it for?
Thats actually a very common question I get. I understand because I was in your shoes at one point in my camera journey. I own the a7siii and the FX30 so I have experience with both. But figuring out which one is right for you is a loaded question. To help you find yior camera, I created a'Which Camera Should I Buy?' course and a free quiz. @@shadowoftokyo haven’t chosen yet, don’t really have the money to just buy a camera without being 100% certain which one i want rn, saving up for some other stuff
Definitely leaning towards the FX30 now over the A7iv, knowing that 4k60 is cropped on the A7iv to super35. I have an A7iii and i plan on keeping it as well so I am still covered if I need better photos. Great comparison video, really enjoyed the narrative as well.
@@thefilmalliance the A7iv 4k 60 crop is the same as the Fx30 in 4k 60 because its already 1.5 crop so I think there no real advantage or disadvantage between the two cameras there. If you need 4K 60 full frame move up to A7Siii
Really enjoy your content! I've been watching the last couple of days and learning so much. Your style is so entertaining as well - the Black Mirror comment by another viewer is spot on. So, I'm getting started as a content creator focusing on vlogging sports, with some facility visits, interviews, practice and game/stadium content; as well as some in in-home "studio" work. Most of the content will be vlogging to TH-cam and/other soc med, but also want to be able to get some great pics. Because of the sports content focus, do you have a recommendation regarding choosing between the FX30 or A7IV?
Great video. Slight comment is that you don’t multiply the aperture by 1.5 as said because that suggests less light. You multiply the effect in depth of field b by1.5. One of the major benefits of an APSC (super 35) sensor and subsequent lenses is that you get greater depth of field while maintaining the amount of light coming in. This means good low light yet more in focus. More keepers. Really loved the comparison and video though. Subscribed
I'm looking for a B cam to compliment my a7s3 - mainly for second angle in interviews and to deliver higher quality stills. I honestly think the a74 is the perfect solution for me.
@@thefilmalliance A mix really- client work and youtube for fun. Smaller clients seem to choose someone who can offer stills as well as video. I need a B cam anyway- think the A74 gives me more options.
I get it. Choosing a camera can be overwhelming with so many options out there. I would say the a6700 but that’s with minimal information on your situation. Lovely. The way you present the things is amazing and i always thought after watching your videos that your are presenting things in front of us not in videos. One thing that i missed in video is low light comparison of both cameras. I heard that FX30 is not good in low light as A7iv or fx3. Secondly, fx 3 have the capacity of dual iso is that available in fx 30. How fx 30 is change with other apsc cameras such as a 6600 or a 6400 or canon R series. Love you brother. Love from Pakistan

Hey, I have been watching your content for a while. Awesome work. What's better for vlogging and travelling on TH-cam? Fx30 or the older a7s iii? I'm asking because of price and future choices.
Sensor size is always king. Sure the A7iv has a 1.5 crop in 4k60 but then again, the FX30 with lens crop, ibis crop, lens breathing comp crop, 4k crop is left with how much sensor size? 7 months after, there are more fx30 for sale than a fx3..
I've noticed that too for some fx30s on sale aftermarket. Curious about picking one up as mainly I want a vid cam, but with the full frame a7iv being as it is might be better to get that since u could still use apsc lenses. More options seems here with Sony vs others I've noticed

@@thefilmalliance I'm happy to not feel like The Lone Ranger. I should add a checklist as well. Keep up the GREAT work!
@@3rebornxd Thanks bro
Would you like a vid on low light comparison? I can def look into and maybe fit it into the schedule.
@@thefilmalliance absolutely. I think it's very relevant between the two cameras; you need good low light to even think about shooting at 4k/120, and if the FX30 suffers in that area it defeats the purpose of having it, for me.
@@PraiseYeezus a7 IV can't do 4K 120 anyway. Only FX30.
Did you find a good answer to this? I also do events/club stuff and wanted to know if the FX30 is usable for that purpose.
Your reviews has a signature style to it. Cinematic and the edits feels like im watching a mystery thriller netflix series haha
Appreciate it
Nice comparison, coach! I think I would go for the FX 30 not just because of the price, but because I want to get into cinematography someday, and I believe the FX 30 would be a great starting point!
Hey Tone, thanks for that. I really appreciate it. I agree. FX30 price is unbeatable
@@thefilmalliancesigma fp around the same price point also a great option.
Once you're there, you'll realize you should have invested in lighting than camera gear
Great video. The main reason to get the FX30 is the cinema workflows. Cine EI, LUTs, rigging and external recording

Awesome information! I'm going with the A7IV
They might be helpful resources for you as you weigh your options.
@@thefilmalliance haha smart marketing, I’ll consider the course, but the quiz definitely helped thanks!
Thanks sounds good
@@ivwvywhat did you end up choosing ?
@@shadowoftokyo haven’t chosen yet, don’t really have the money to just buy a camera without being 100% certain which one i want rn, saving up for some other stuff
Definitely leaning towards the FX30 now over the A7iv, knowing that 4k60 is cropped on the A7iv to super35. I have an A7iii and i plan on keeping it as well so I am still covered if I need better photos. Great comparison video, really enjoyed the narrative as well.
Good call, yes, it seems like if your more into filmmaking then I would go with the fx30.
@@thefilmalliance the A7iv 4k 60 crop is the same as the Fx30 in 4k 60 because its already 1.5 crop so I think there no real advantage or disadvantage between the two cameras there. If you need 4K 60 full frame move up to A7Siii
I have the a7iii too
Really enjoy your content!
Subscribed
Hey Andrew, thank you so much for the pointer. I really appreciate it, and I love getting feedback from people that know what they are talking about.
I'm looking for a B cam to compliment my a7s3 - mainly for second angle in interviews and to deliver higher quality stills. I honestly think the a74 is the perfect solution for me.
May I ask what you are shooting? Vlogging? Client work? Short narrative films?
@@thefilmalliance A mix really- client work and youtube for fun. Smaller clients seem to choose someone who can offer stills as well as video. I need a B cam anyway- think the A74 gives me more options.
All questions answered! AMAZING. Thanks so much, Joe!
Great, I am so glad that it helped. Do you have either of these cameras?
A f 2.0 is a f2.0 no matter if ff or apc. The only thing you have to multiply is the depth of field. You should know better
I’m looking to upgrade from the Sony a6500, and my main purpose is to create TH-cam videos professionally. Which camera would you suggest?
I get it. Choosing a camera can be overwhelming with so many options out there. I would say the a6700 but that’s with minimal information on your situation. To help people find the perfect camera, I created a ‘Which Camera Should I Buy?’ course and a free quiz. They might be helpful resources for you as you weigh your options.
Love from Pakistan
hey there, thanks so much for all of the encouragement, pointers, and feedback. I really appreciate all of it. I had a couple people comment about comparing the low light capabilities. Would you like a vid on that?
@@thefilmalliance yes pls bcoz ppl said its not like fx 30 in dual iso
I was sure I wanted the FX30 for TH-cam. Now I'm not so sure since you recommended the A7IV 😅 I have a couple of years until I need to upgrade anyway (still trying to get the most out of my ZV-1) so hopefully by then I will have a better idea on what's best for me!
It really all depends on what you need it for. I think either one would be fine for you
I'm about to buy a camera and it's exactly what I said at the beginning of the video, I can't go wrong with the choice. My doubt is not between fx30 x a7iv but between a7s3 x a7iv. Which would you recommend? I do events, weddings, travel videos.
I've A7cii and canon 90D. Im feeling I should upgrade my second camera. I decided to buy A6700 but so confused if I should buy FX30 instead
I have a9 and bmpcc4k I try to resist but the hype train hit hard lol
for travel hybrid like me A7iv maybe better choice but I miss A9 for blackout free and silent shutter. So I still wait the price fall down not hurry to get.
I can see the hard work you put into the video, amazing. I picked Ip the fx30, it’s pretty good.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it. Is your Fx30 backordered? I know that they were backordered for a long time.
@@thefilmalliance I preordered before release date, got it a few days after, so i've had it for a while now. I imagine a lot of people started buying the camera once it got media attention, likely cased a shortage. I'm in Canada, not sure if that made a difference.

Thanks for the comparison. Kinda has me feeling stupid for still going with a7iv as my first camera. As I will be primarily doing video. But you never know.

But, full frame is full frame haha. Would a used A7S III perhaps be the way to go? 💁🏻♂️ the new ZV-E1 is an absolute fail haha. It’s about £1000 over-priced. That thing will overheat so bad. Thanks man, for all of the support and positive feedback. I think that the A7Siii would be the way to go. Why do you not like full frame?
@@thefilmalliance huh? I love full frame. I prefer it. Since posting my comment, I’ve seen more reviews on the ZV-E1 and, yes…it’s overpriced. I just thought the FX30 was a better built camera is all and was hard to ignore at it’s price. When I said the A7iii was uninspiring to pick up and film with, it was simply down to the stabilisation and autofocus in video. The ZV1 had way better autofocus and was actually more fun. That’s all. But obviously, today, we’ve come a long way so I’ll see what some more reviews say on the zve1 overheating. Cheers.
