Then you are not getting the point of a maxi scooter. If I had to choose between them for just one day I would choose the X-ADV. If I had to choose to own one of them it would be the TMax.

I see the X-ADV more as a dual-sport or even touring motorcycle rather than a maxi scooter. test drove it a few weeks ago with a pillion and we were both impressed how smooth, yet punchy when necessary, and also how comfortable it is. Much more comfortable than the NC750, for the rider and especially the pillion.

Fine get a motorcycle but I love my Xadv. I love everything about it but it's so easy and fun to ride. I have ridden my Xadv on some really rough stuff, in fact it can go places the Africa Twin can't. It can because it's so stable with its low COG, there's little fear of dropping it. The NC doesn't appeal to me, it's just a cheap bike, but the Xadv is top of the line everything from the USD forks to the radial mounted calipers. The Xadv is all I need in a bike. It goes anywhere and does it with exceptional economy and fun. It'll tour the highways, rip up the trails, and commute around the city. The TMax does not appeal to me at all, it's the ugliest thing on 2 wheels.

The X-ADV actually has 3 levels of "Sport Mode" although probably not relevant in this comparison test, also, if off roading is your thing, you can get the optional footrest which are set at the back of the running boards, these would address your (correct) observation regarding being to close to the bars when standing, these are as far as I know are not an option for the TMAX, regarding storage, you are correct regarding the under seat storage, I couldn't fit my Arai Tour X in there with it's peak attached. Anyway, a great mini review 🙂

    • @buellterrier3596

No it isn't redundant because a transmission could vary the gears in steps, in that case it will be "discretely" variable or "step-wise" variable. In the case of the CVT, there are no steps, i.e. the variation in the gear ratio is infinitely seamless between the lowest gear ratio to the highest gear ratio.

    Blimey!
10 out of 10 for your video making style and "all you need and nothing more" approach.
    I ride a 2012 V-Strom 650 infrequently and PCX150 daily here in Japan.
Although I adore the V-strom - and well serviced it will run for ever - I want a more comfortable option (I get pain in my left hand and wrist from clutch work when in traffic).
The 2018 Suzuki Skywave 650, 2017 Yamaha Tmax DX and Kymco AK550 are on my wish-list.
A Honda Integra or even CTX700 would have been but if I am not getting a motorcycle, I am not going to tolerate chain maintenance every 1,000 kilometres.
I am almost sure I will get the Tmax, having just looked at one, but having had a Skywave (Burgman) 650 as a loaner (earlier model), I know how comfortable they are.
Still, 1,350,000 Yen for a the Tmax DX (about 10,000 pounds), and 1,000,000 for the Skywave... what to do?
The final consideration is road conditions and traffic - road speeds here are 1/3 lower than the U.K., and roads are narrower, so filtering ability is as important as almost all other considerations.
Thanks for a very good review and comparison video.
I'll be on the look-out for more of your videos (not that I`ll be buying most of what I see there).

I traded in my x max 400 and I think the t max will be it for a good few years. Decent power, storage and great looks. It's my 7 days a week vehicle so for me, the classic maxi scooter-isms are what wins out for me too rather than the x adv having more power, less storage and less weather protection.

I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. The TMax is a maxi scooter whilst I am not sure in what category the Honda belongs. It has a scooter step through look but a dual clutch transmission whereas most scooters even the maxis have a belt driven CVT. The Honda appears to be designed with some off road capabilities whereas I would never attempt off road riding on a scooter. I own a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 (cruiser)and a Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive (scooter). Scooters, even the maxis are designed for riding in the city. The big ones can take on touring as well. A cruiser is for the open road spending all day on the road. My point here is choose a bike/scooter that suits the riding you're going to do, commuting, touring, off-road riding and so on. Comparisons are only fair if you're comparing apples to apples.

Interesting review. All very subjective of course. I'm a recent convert to the Tmax and I find the Tmax 530 standard model entirelt suitable to my personal needs. I love it. I also love my W800 Kawasaki but for very different reasons. as for off roading, I would never expect the Tmax to be as green lane capable as say, an XT225 or a Honda CRT250 both of which I have owned. . I know for sure the Tmax would not handle some of my favourite sections of the Fosse way, why would it? Niether would the W800 but for different reasons. Still, an enjoyable video. Thanks.

Bmw c650 gt and c650 sport would destroy both of these choices and its available in America. The Suzuki Burgman 650 is also a better choice than both of these and available in the us. That's if you're interested in maxi scooters. They are also 2-4k $ more but definitely better choices.

If you want a Maxi Scooter go for TMax, Burgman, Vespa 🛵, Klymco, BMW etc... but if you want the experience to be closer to a motorcycle with off road appeal and a DCT gearbox the It has to be the XADV for choice...

This seems like a good place to ask...
I have just bought a 2017 Tmax 530 DX brand new. Don't congratulate me. I'm very disappointed. Between about 3,750 - 4,750 RPM it sounds like a broken washing machine. It seems to be the way they are made. I thought the test-ride model had been modified, but now it seems not. I cannot keep the bike if I cannot make it quiet. Who buys a scooter for relaxed cruising and then listens to an incessant drone noise at cruising RPM?
    QUIET exhaust recommendations, PLEASE!

I haven't ridden either of these machines. They both have pluses and minuses. The Yamaha TMax may be a bit over priced if it is the same as the Honda but has a almost 200cc smaller engine - especially when you consider there is a better equipped model than the base model you tested. There seem like a few things to like about both of them. Despite the designation of the Honda I'm not buying a scooter to go off-road even if it is just down a short country lane. The Honda screen while more easily adjustable looks to me to be mostly cosmetic like one of those stupid screens you see on sports bikes. The Yamaha might need a bit more work and time to adjust but looks to do a better job of providing wind protection. This is important because it takes the strain off the arms, chest and shoulders at motorway speeds. When considering the Yamaha I wonder why the screen isn't electrically adjustable like the Suzuki Burgman 650 (at least on the Executive model). Your review is comprehensive and informative. Thanks for posting

  • @busterrabbit

Off-road on these will be more down to tyres than anything else, oh and by the way you should never ride sitting down with your legs dangling on or off-road. The Honda combines the disadvantages of a motorcycle and the disadvantages of a scooter and isn't very good at either, I'm not sure who it appeals to. The T MAX (and get the model with the electric screen next time) is a great two wheeler and can commute or tour with the best of them, without the hassle and width of panniers!

If all the scooters you've ridden have been too hesitant when asking for power, they have all been running stock roller weights in the cvt ;)
Manufacturers always put heavy roller weights in to make mpg and emission figures nicer.
You typically need to drop 10%.
    End of story.
But still, nice to hear how it rides with the stock roller weights.
Btw. They cost like 10-15£ for a set. Try it out if you have a scooter with stock roller weights.
Its a long tine since ive ridden any scooter with stock roller weights
In denmark we only ride 50cc and 125 scooters, and we have like a culture for derestricting bikes illegally.
Around 60% ride illegally, so most people know the basics of scooter tuning, or at least know someone who does.
And an ubusually large sample of the population knows how to do mechanical finetuning at an intermediate level on scooters.
We should legalize them... thats anothee story for another day.
Roller weights is the first thing you adjust after derestricting the cvt.
Because when someones already in there, and if its a 2stroke scooter it does NOT like heavy rollers.
My yamaha cygnus got a malossi cvt kit with around 15%lighter roller weights in it.
Since then i've said that EVERY sporty 4stroke scooter needs to have its cvt adjusted to run right.
It makes a very noticable difference
Probably less so on a tmax ieve never tried one. But im absolutely certain that the difference will be more than noticeable. Short of overwhelming.
With a set slightly stiffer engagement spring in the centeifugal clutch i am tempted to say it would powerwheelie off the line effortlessly.
Since clutch engagement and gear ratio choice is preset, testing a tmax with stock cvt setting is kindof pointless :'D
Noone ought to ride one as it comes from the regulatory inspection /factory

Old review. The X-ADV has traction control now. My opinion... the X-ADV is far better. It has more power, looks a lot better, feels and sounds like a Motorbike and has longer travel suspension. I don't think these two are close enough to compare. But before I saw the review I didn't know that, so the review was still a good idea.

Watching this review I have to say: I don't think you are getting to the bottom of the concept of the X-ADV. I bought one (2018 model), and it is a real motorbike, not a scooter. So instead of comparing it to the TMAX, which is a really fine scooter, I have to admit, it would have been more helpful to compare it to a motorbike. It is a motorbike with a helmet compartment. And DCT with drive modes (S1 might have been the right one to choose, when going faster and overtaking cars, although you can always change the gears manually with one click on the left hand).
It is not a perfect bike, and it is ugly as hell. But it does the job for me, and it gives me joy as an every day commuter ride. =)
