      I'm so glad you're inspired! I have to say, the colour from those few Caran D'ache pastels is stunning against the dark pastelmat. I have a tutorial for a fighter fish here:

    Hi, thank you so much for your videos, they're very helpful. You mentioned about getting pencils in the post - I am moving into pastel pencils but worried about ordering online for delivery (espcially open stock); have you ever had issues with breakages when having pencils delivered in the post?

  • @vincefreeman1130
    @vincefreeman1130 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have never used pastels or pastelmat, so perhaps have no real right to comment here, but I do paint in oils and your comment on how the pastel appears darker on the lighter board intrigued me.
    It does appear darker but I believe that's a trick of the light and eye, colours appear darker in value when placed next to a brighter value. It's closely related to the checker illusion from Edward Howard Alleson.
    In theory the fish would appear much brighter if painted on the lighter toned paper IF you then darkened around it, and the pastel pigments have an element of translucency.
    Unless there's some other weird science at work here 😀 .
    Anyway it's a beautiful piece of art and has inspired me to buy some pastels as it looks a lot less hassle for travel/plein air sketches! Keep up the great work! 😊

    • @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
      @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’re totally right! The pastel pencils are not completely opaque (and like oils, some are more than others), so a white pastel mat with dark around it would give the brightest results. I have to say I love working in this way as I get a really harmonious finish to all the tones 😊

    Only recently found your videos. Beautiful work. I have tried pastel pencils a few times, but return to my coloured pencils on pastelmat. Will certainly give it another go after watching you. You don’t seem to bother much with backgrounds, using the colour of the paper/ board to do the work for you. Have you done a tutorial on backgrounds using pastel pencil and have you ever worked with coloured pencils? My interest is wildlife too. Michael.

    • @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
      @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michel, thanks for your comment. You're quite right that I don't usually bother with backgrounds, there are a few reasons for this. In short, I don't enjoy creating backgrounds and find it a bit dull (personally!). I also find pastels somewhat problematic as the opacity of the premixed colours creates certain challenges when trying to obtain your depth. I haven't worked with coloured pencils, no, I found pastel pencils and simply love them!

    Have you ever considered using a mechanical pencil (the one that holds a regular pencil lead) for the broken pieces of pastel that are long enough so that there isn’t so much wastage of pastel? I ask because it costs me twice as much to buy art materials because I have to order them from the US and have them shipped to my US shipper who brings them over to The Bahamas for me. I am charged 45% duty plus shipping charges plus tax on the cost of the items and on the shipping! I simply can’t afford to waste a speck of pastel lol!

    • @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820
      @emilyrosewildlifeart-paste9820  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I feel you Mona! It can get pricey and is surely doubled hard for you. I haven't tried what you suuggest, however, with more practice I do waste less and less pastel. That said, as your pencils are travelling very far to reach you, I suspect more pastel could be broken. If I were you, I'd give it a go! Be aware that different pastel brands have different pastel diameters :)

    • @StorytellingHeadshots
      @StorytellingHeadshots 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Mona, You may not see this. Because your comment was a while ago. But you can crush the broken tips and use them “pan pastel” style-especially for base layers. You can use pan pastel soft foam tools for this, or cheap soft brushes..
      Also Caran D’ache has a cool thing that is like a palette with a rough surface that also you can “sand down” broken tips and then use a brush to apply the resulting dust.
      Also, pastel is water soluble so you can break down the dust and then apply with a bit of water. And a brush. I recommend using cheap synthetic as this will definitely ruin any quality watercolor brush.
      Lots of options here!
      I hope this is helpful! 😊

There is always a risk for breakage, however, do keep in mind the pencils have had to travel to get to the shop in the first place.
