i did this for about 2 months and i actually saw a big difference, i was happier and cared less about appearances/felt better ab myself. sadly, im back on the app and as i continue to use it, i notice that i always check my body and face in the mirror whenever im alone and in front of one. i know i will continue to use this app until i am once again in a low mental state instead of just putting the app down completely. but one day i hope i can leave the app behind. sadly, there is indeed a lot of fun content on there as well as a lot of cool content creators that i enjoy watching

I dont think that pretty people understand how fucking painful it is to be ugly. Like realising that *_this_* is how you're going to look forever and that it gets worse as you age is absolutely fucking painful. I can't describe it any other way.

Every time she said "what difference does it make" I cringed. This girl is pretty and intelligent, but she doesnt realize how different one's life experience can be when they're not conventionally attractive. People perceive you in a completely different way - they ignore you, exclude you, ect. I know it's not the most important thing to be attractive, but being unattractive does have an effect on you socially.

And once you stop highlighting everyone’s opinions of u and only look for validation within yourself instead of others is when u start to have confidence and I feel like u will look better naturally. And looks are subjective not objective how some ppl try to put it. Even if u feel the ugliest, it’s still subjective and stop looking at it as a fact and stop focusing on it so much. Absolutely. Quarantine was a really good time for my body image bc I didn't have to worry or deal with the judgement of others because of how I looked (also wasn't using social media) so I could just exist.
I know I'm not really good looking, I'm average at best. I see it in how my friends get treated compared to me, or how guys talk in front of me, or how people react to me. But at least in quarantine I could wear a mask and just vibe without the constant reminder that I'm not attractive. And I didn't mind what I saw in the mirror as much lol.

The thing is, it's true that from a scientific point symmetry is beauty but asymmetry is always going to be here so why stigmatize it? Like, most people sleep on one side, a lot of people lay down on one side, a lot of people rest their face on their hands, literally almost anything and everything will contribute to asymmetry so why stigmatize it? As someone who has really bad insecurity issues, the whole "Who cares?" thing is kind of mean. Yes, beauty isn't everything. But it's different when you can't get out of bed because you hate how you look, you hurt yourself because you hate how you look, you feel physically sick at your reflection, you've been made fun of for years about your appearance, and you have even thought about ending your life because you hate yourself. I understand that you, as a pretty and secure person, would see everything differently, but please try to think of people who can't just "not care" about their appearance. Because unless we get surgery (too expensive) or put on loads of makeup (which wouldn't even last anyway), we will never be conventionally attractive. And that fact alone, even with beauty not being the top priority in the world, hurts.
Of course this is just my perspective. But try to think more about WHY these people are insecure instead of telling them to get over it.

ok for all my asymmetrical girls out there i just wanna say she's wrong about facial symmetry making u "prettier." studies on facial symmetry show that when a large pool of ppl are shown pictures of various faces and asked to rate their attractiveness, symmetrical faces tend toward a bell cure grouping where most people agree that they're pleasant to look at. But asymmetrical faces tend towards much more varied results. the same asymmetrical face will get some rating it as unattractive and others rating it as incredibly beautiful. we are programmed to expect symmetry as she says, so basically those with asymmetrical faces are more memorable because they break that expectation, which to some is unpleasant but to others is striking. fr tho i wish she had discussed this aspect of facial symmetry instead of trying to prove to us how symmetry makes u prettier always, proving to us that she has a symmetrical face, and then doubling back and saying 'but facial symmetry doesnt matter.' for someone trying to discuss the dangers of comparing urself to beauty confirmation videos she sure has no problem showing us one of herself.

I studied the concept of beauty in uni and she misspoke a little. Babies 1) will obviously stare at anything, theyre babies and 2) the leading rationale for why they *might* stare longer at symmetrical faces is simply because theres less information to process if both halves are the same. Their little baby brains get tired of analyzing the very chaotic nature of reality (same lol) and an symmetrical face is probably just a less taxing thing to look at for a while

Brain chemistry stan here: one of the reasons we like symmetrical faces, camera shots, even 4/4 time in music is because symmetry results in the least amount of cognitive work for our brain.
Our brains are constantly having to define and predict different stimuli so we developed an affinity for anything that repeats itself (pattern recognition bias) because then our senses could “relax” for a second.
So ironically, My brain really doesnt think even faces are cute, shes just lazy and thats the most boring thing in the room. It takes half the effort to focus on lol
Its not an important distinction at all (bc then we invented beauty standards) but i really want to kill that “there is an *ideal* human form” argument. Nah bruh, thats just you projecting. Get therapy.

So thanks for the info, that's awesome to know.
After all, nature is almost never symmetrical: clouds, trees, flowers, canyons, etc yet we find it beautiful. It's really more about golden ratio and proportions, and even proportions come down to symmetry which thanks to you we now know is just lazy 🧠 preference

I WAS gonna subscribe but your lack of empathy towards those who are insecure just threw me off, (around 9 minute mark you start a rant) and the fact you tried to humble-brag about having a symmetrical face yourself. You do speak a lot of truth, but I think at the same time, since this issue is not relatable to you anymore (your glow up), you are much more harsh on the people facing it, making it obvious that you view them as super overdramatic, and ranting at them for being 'so fragile.' It didn't feel like tough love, either, it felt insulting. They don't need to hear anymore aggression, they are suffering, too, although no one is above normal criticism, like the people who actively put down others for these physical traits.
All in all, you are right, TikTok is a breeding ground for insecurities and we should collectively say no to that BS and try to combat those harmful challenges any way we can, as well as teach ourselves not to crumble into pieces over something as trivial as elbow skin, or hip dips. This message would just be a bit louder if you didn't boast about being symmetrical. That was kind of funny, ngl. You already showed examples of other people doing the symmetrical filter, you didn't need to demonstrate it yourself then go "OMG the baby staring thing makes so much sense now!! Its because I also have symmetry! I've been told that before, too!!" You probably thought nothing of it but you had plenty time to consider how weird it was, considering you start barking at people who care about their facial symmetry. Weird, dude.
If you read this far, have a good day everyone, I hope you pass all your tests and get a bunch of money. 👐

I think it's kind of interesting that it proves her point. We claim to say these things don't matter, but actually we checked and we fall into the acceptable side so we're good. While it isn't framed that way, it shows how these body checking trends affected her, too. She has high self awareness and and I feel like she's really close to saying how much it affects her, but she falls short of saying how she would feel if she didn't pass the "body checks". I feel like that would bring her point full circle to a call to action instead of illustrating how you can criticize a trend safely once you know it won't degrade you personally. I hope this made sense. I think she has some interesting takes, but doesn't fully remove herself from the situation, while also not staying in it deep enough to convey a lot of empathy? I think she definitely feels it, but sometimes it doesn't come across, which can make the video feel a little confusing. They're really interesting conversations, though.

First off, yes a lot of these 14 year olds in my opinion are pretty dumb for not critically analyzing the the source of these standards. Since I was 11, it wasn't so hard to see through the bs and realize that beauty standards just invent insecurities for us to obtain and let stupid corporations profit off of it. If someone isn't rational enough to see through this, they shouldn't have the app. Plain and simple.
And then there's the corporations promoting the beauty standards like it's a business (and it is). And whose the consumers? Fools that just want to fit in and in my opinion, we need to normalize critical thinking and with that, HOPEFULLY people can start to see through this and realize how dumb it is and promote interesting topics instead.

I really wanted to love this video. This is such an important topic. I thought it was gonna be a safe space for us asymmetrical girlies and instead she started off by validating our insecurities and literally stating the exact "science" that makes us "inherently unattractive" (complete bs) and THEN showed how she was explicitly hopping on the trend to prove her attractiveness and fitting the standard. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was made to feel like shit watching this, and I wasn't insecure about any of this before. I didn't even realize these were things other people would possibly notice or judge me for, but now I certainly feel judged. She was basically just like "y'all are ugly but that is ok

Everybody’s face is asymmetrical to some degree. Also meeting beauty standards set before you is never gonna fulfill you or make you truly happy. It will never make you feel genuinely loved or appreciated or comfortable with who you are. Even people who are perceived to be beautiful aren’t fulfilled or satisfied with just being them because society as a whole has a shallow and weird objectification of beauty that isn’t really enough to have great connections and relationships.

Which is kinda sinister? the natural check against an echo chamber would be the ability to follow a bunch of random people ONCE and just have a diverse feed as a result. Now, no matter how many people i follow, my for you page, my twitter feed, my IG explore page will aggressively pull me towards whatever i just liked. What if i dont want more of the same, what if idk...I WANTED A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE??

But I gotta say, it's easy for you to say that it's 'all in people's head' or imply that or generally say stuff like that when you yourself haven't or aren't experiencing these issues. You mentioning that you are and been told to be symmetrical and then literally putting a tiktok of yourself doing that fucked trend just shows that you have no idea what you're actually talking about. People's feelings aren't your opinions. Same with the bbl video. Since you haven't experienced or aren't experiencing that and feeling the way these people feel you don't got a say on that cause if you can't put yourself into such position then how the fuck are you supposed to know how someone feels or what effect it has on them.
Same thing if a person that never experienced or doesn't experience racism was about to explain a person of certain race "racism doesn't happen".
I like you but you gotta check yourself mrs ma'am. Cause you're proving something you came here to disprove it seems like? People having insecurities isn't something that makes them weak either, it makes them human wth

I was partly taken aback at how silly it was to be insecure about having bones and partly fuming by how many pretty women's self-love and confidence are shattered by this.
Like I know I'm beautiful, and I embrace every ounce on my non-binary self, but then other peoples' (mainly male) gazes come into play and pervert my confidence into something that I'm not.
