I'm in highschool and I've found that a lot of my girl friends understand that instagram is fake and they're moving towards body positivity. BUT the issue weirdly seems to be centered around the fact that it isn't the girls who follow the IG influencers but it's the guys. so there's this weird vibe that the girls are trying to ditch this beauty standard but all these boys are still hanging on to these photoshopped versions of what women are supposed to look like. I wish it didn't cause so much insecurity (because I'm trying to ditch that internal male gaze) but it's kind of interesting to be aware of.

Boys and men are either just very behind in seeing how fake Instagram is, or they know but seem to not react - it’s like they feel they’ll be emasculated if they show they care as caring is too feminine? My brother is really into fitness and will constantly tell me that most of the big (male) fitness influencers are on steroids and obviously all muscle pictures are posed and edited. That being said, he still finds pressure to match up to this kind of physique despite knowing it’s not real. I saw a tiktok where a girl pointed out that GymSharks Instagram page had all these realistic body pictures of female athletes to celebrate “real” bodies, but all the photos of male athletes were ultra posed/tensed shots to make them look lean af. She had positive reactions from most girls but she got SO much hate from boys in the comments calling her horrible things and saying they “weren’t as weak” as the girls and didn’t “cry” about their appearance. Basically, they told her to fuck off, mind her own business and not to speak for or help them. A man then did the same video and all these men were commenting saying they agreed and there was too much pressure on them, I sat there like 🤨
I feel like they’re coming to a realisation about the fakery of social media but it’s just taking them much longer to get there.
The problem is, is that they seem to be REALLY bad at telling what’s fake and what isn’t, so they’ll follow girls they think are natural when in reality they aren’t. Us girls know this because we know the tricks of the trade through “outing” pages like Beauty False or surgery before and after comparison photos and even influencers posts outing themselves to highlight internet vs reality! But the boys don’t, they haven’t seen this content because the algorithm doesn’t show it to them and also hardly any male influencers they would follow produce similar content either. As a result, the girls in their everyday life are subconsciously held to these online caricatures and thus the cycle continues...
I think things will change, but it’s not going to happen quickly.

Same here in Germany. Not sure how the situation is in high school though as I'm in university already. But nobody takes them seriously/looks up to them/admires them here in my age range and circle of acquaintances. People are also well aware of the problems that being as rich as these people are causes other people (the ones at the bottom of the food chain aka the poor. Making them more poor or even homeless) in a capitalist society. Hence why people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and also the Kardashians are not well liked here. They're shitty people for accepting the effects they have on society at large just to... I mean idk? Why are they accepting it? To wear ugly, overpriced, unethically produced clothes and own mansions so big, they spent 95% of their time in them on just 5% of the area? From a moral perspective, these people straight-up disgust me ngl.

Hot take: A lot of girls don't actually like giving out their number so they'll opt for getting their instagram. And for the take on DM-ing a girl only when they post is not always because they forget you exist, but also because it's a lot easier to make conversation when something relevant or recent pops up. It's not always a wise approach to cold DM out of the blue. But if you're just friends, That rule goes out the window

What? Is social media THAT important where you guys live? Because, where I'm from (Portugal) it's not that big of a deal, to the point that there aren't any actual "influencers" and that there are A LOT of people that either *don't have social media or that don't post anything there* and just use it to follow the news or something of the sort.
Social media here is mostly to talk to the friends you've made in real life and to follow events/ shows/ companies/ news/ celebrities. Instagram specifically also has the added function of a public sort of photo album. Though people tend to curate what they post, and there are some who will take 100 pictures before posting one, they do not usually photoshop their face or their body - filters, as in colour grading, are common, however.
That's how I see it, at least in my age range (I'm an university student, so it might be different for teenagers).

Re: "ugh why did I post that nobody cares"
I was in that hole a while back, and the mindset I adopted which helped me is that this is MY account, this is MY page, MY post, MY story. I posted it because I wanted to, because I liked it, because I care. It's healthier imo to use social media when you do it for your own enjoyment, and not to push a certain image. It's easy to say it, but truly, once you realise that having a photo that YOU are proud of is enough reason to post if you want to, even if it isn't "perfect".

The thing you have to understand tho is that there are a lot black people who will condemn white people for *NOT* speaking up on black struggles (see: silence is acceptance)
I agree that it’s annoying being constantly reminded of struggles when I just wanna browse social media for memes and funny videos, but I also feel like non-racist white people need to constantly prove that they’re not racist by bringing awareness to black issues, *ESPECIALLY* with how loosely the word “racist” is constantly thrown around, and with how many people are constantly labeled racist for *NOT* speaking up on said issues/struggles

Im 35 and only got an instagram like 2 years ago. When it came out I was in film school and completely disgusted by this homogeneous “photographery” social media thing. The format of the big block of pics with no borders, the filters, even the way comments are structured is built to flood and smush together.
So now I’ve seen for myself what it is, I do not get why people do this to themselves. Even my friends on there don’t interact with each other through anything beyond emojis or likes.
So it feels like spying on people you used to know but are no longer in their real lives.
Anyways I deleted my account and will now get back to living my life.
    Good video.
    Get that booty 🤘

Class plays such an important part in beauty perceptions - the woman who can afford to splurge on her appearance with time and money is more desirable, more otherly. The perfection these people display is not real but they can afford to curate their lives. The Kardashians were a driver for this filtered portrayal of life, and influencers have strengthened it.
Social media is overtaught bc part of us wants to try to live up to that level. Even within our own small social groups, we want to increase our social capital. I don't post a lot because of anxiety and comparing myself to others I know, but I hope to work on that. Realising that we can remove ourselves from that pressure, and view it as what it is - curation and editing - will lead to more peace.

I’m from eastern Europe, and Kardashians aren’t really well-known where I live, but the beauty standards here are pretty much the same.

Something that has helped me a lot is shutting off notifications for my social media apps. I go on them for a little bit of time, but only when I feel like it. That way I'm not constantly being thrown into all of the drama that is on social media. I enjoy it for the connections that I made and the art that I have discovered, but with the examples you gave, I completely dislike many platforms, including instagram, for.
Always great to hear you voice your perspective and open up a conversation. Social media really does cause people's perspective of self and self-worth to change, sometimes postitive but also many negative ways.
I appreciate your content and hope you are doing well. Sending supportive, postive, and loving energy♡

I really enjoyed what you said about people trying to seem “carefree” on the platform when we literally put so much effort into our posts - I think we need to find that healthy balance again, where we use social media for its actual purpose. To express our creativity and connect with others - I feel like we’re overindulgent because it’s easier and seemingly ‘less taxing’ than actually taking time to call or meet up with someone. It’s ironic, how we try to make our lives seem effortless on SM when in reality so many of us prioritize it over most things. “There’s no such thing as not giving a fuck because when you’re choosing to not give a fuck - you’re actively trying to not care, meaning you do”- so I agree we need to stop taking it so seriously and actually live our lives! Amazing vid, loved listening to you, you should start a podcast !💃🏾
