This is so true...I'm a stylist who got duped when I got locs...truthfully I was being LAZY...not wanting to take the time to do my own and wasted $1200 ...I did keep tht set of locs for about 15 mos...eventhough I hated the parting!...which did cause breakage in the crown...parting was too small for the size of the loc...long story short, I combed them out and did my own...like I should've done in the 1st place....still too lazy to interlock my own hair...so I chose to do micro twist for fullness...my grid is perfect, for my texture & density....I did decide to add an extension to my tips only...to avoid bleaching/coloring my hair....the tiny amount of strands won't make much of a weight difference....I'm happier now

I’m sorry that happened to you, but you have a happy ending now and that’s the most important thing! It’s so hard to know if you’re doing the right thing. How far are you into your journey now?

I can relate to your story and I am going to take the time to install my own loc’s as well. I’m changing from pencil loc’s to micro loc’s instant locked with crocheted on extension’s, 2 point rotation to maintain the new growth on my medium density hair, loc count of 500.

THANK YOU for this video!!! Oh my goodness, I recently watched a YT video where this woman said she was “installing ‘Sisterlocks’ or Microlocs, or whatever you want to call them”. I felt sorry for her ‘client’ who thought she was getting Sisterlocks. Obviously from what the installer said, she was not a Certified loctician. SMH.

This is why I haven't done the certification and I'm still a trainee. I don't like the sisterlocks system and I don't think the brand gives enough to use after we take the course. I remember asking questions at the training as a licensed cosmetologist and was being told that I need to forget what I learnt in cosmetology school 😵‍💫 when it comes to doing sisterlocks. I felt like the whole system is designed to bring money back to the top and I almost felt like I was joining a cult (lowkey). When I do consultations I interview my clients as well to make sure they are really serious and ready for the journey they are about to embark on. I'm not about to waste my time on an install for someone who isn't serious about getting locked. In my opinion, I don't believe in microlocs extensions because it is very easy for locks to break from the weight of your own hair much less when you add extensions. Some people are treating it like braids and not understanding that this is a journey for most people towards hair freedom so it should be done as safely as possible. If you want locks you need patience. But that's how I feel.

So I started my microlocs via two strand twists with human hair extensions one month ago. These are the belle microlocs you may have seen on IG. They were very expensive; however, she has a years worth of pictures of installations and progress photos. I had been contemplating and researching locs for over a year. I almost started microlocs with my own hair but opted to get the extensions. They are extremely lightweight. I literally don't feel the weight of them on my head. It's lighter than any protective style I did with extensions. I have low density soft hair. But I've never had an issue with braids slipping out. I opted for the extensions because the low density would have me looking like a bald scalp for over a year and I don't enjoy wearing wigs. If done incorrectly, yeah extensions can be problematic. And yes the price was ~$2000. But that's because I opted to go with someone who had tons of photos of their work.

And I assume that if you're going back to them for reties they'd give real time advice. I've had one slip so far so it was combined with the one next to it. But other than that, I'm loving it! 2 months today

This is a great video. The girl who started my locs did a fantastic job but she charged me shop prices and a fee to travel to my home but she didn’t wash my hair. She told me she didn’t offer that service. I told her I’ve been getting my hair done for over 30 years. Literally since elementary school and I’ve never met a stylist that wanted to work on hair they didn’t clean let alone in some cases maintain and manage. So that’s a rough point of ignorance for me. Because I know natural stylist and I got both my natural and relaxed hair done in a shop. Idk why it didn’t register for me that I needed someone who could manage and maintain the health of my hair in addition to the style in this case. Thanks for this video.

Let me just let you all know why I don't offer ext. This is not a debate either. Nothing anyone says will make me change my mind. In my 9 years experience with locks I have saw a lot and I'm not in the business of guessing with ppl hair I did that already did that.
Unfortunately you may not feel what may be too heavy to your hair. Plenty have lost hair from braids etc that they didn't think was heavy. Think about it like this...When your hair locks it has months of shedded hair in it so where the lock started with 20 strands after 1 month let's say 10 of those strands have shed. Now the 20 at the base are holding on to extra weight. Now take those same 20 strands and add 30 strands of ext to it and not at the tip from the base. So now you have 20 strands of hair holding 30 extra strands plus the hair that will be shedding. That becomes heavy. To the strands not necessarily to you. Also with trimming them you will be trimming your real hair too bcz the hair is intertwined from the base when started vs at the tips when it is two strand twist ext.
With that being said I am not telling anyone to not get extensions. I am not doing them because I know hair and I like to do anything in my power to keep my clients hair on their heads. Keywords in MY power. so I will not do anything that I feel could potentially cause damage to those who trust me to keep their strands healthy.

I agree with your reasons on loc extensions also. It’s like weave hair it’s fake or not your natural hair locking. I want to be 100% natural I don’t want this foreign hair intertwined with my hair. I’m 16 mos Sisterloc’d and loving my journey. My hair is thin fine low density too. I looked like a bald eagle with my starter locs establishment. But to see your locs grow and thicken them flourish is so beautiful. While look at what God has blessed me with these beautiful strands of hair. I think some people want locs for the hair style and not for the life style! In the long run I believe the extensions ruin your hair. To each it’s own.

So I wish your video had been available before my install and I wish I had done more research and possibly gone with my first choice for my install because…reasons.
I’m pretty sure most of the reviews posted for the lady that installed my microlocs were fake and in hindsight there weren’t enough pictures of her alleged work posted; that’s on me for choosing wrong and I own it. That being said, I wanted what I wanted and I didn’t want to wait any longer so I jumped the gun and ignored all of the red flags. Her shop was always dirty, she was late every day of my install, she promised all sorts of new client/new install gifts and supplies and never delivered, my grid is sloppy, many of my locs are misshapen/gappy/oversized/ and my new loctician has to take them down and redo them (and I have to pay for the repair/redo, of course) and my first retie (with the lady that did my install) was two tight and I had a headache for almost 2 weeks. All of that and I paid $1,100 for a microloc install on 15 inches of hair. That included a $100 tip because I believe in paying black women for their labor.
I really wish I had just gotten Sisterlocs with a true consultant because I got played (played myself in the process) and that pisses me off. I love my locs though and I’m going to make the best of the mess until I get them where I want to be. I know that was a lot but I just want everyone to learn from my mistakes. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND TRUST YOUR GUT! It will save you money, time and energy.

I caught the tail end. But interview ppl. The person who started my locs is the same person who was doing my natural hair. She was a referral. Even after all the time being natural, I still waited until I was ready. I also am blessed to have a Sorority Sister that's a sisterlocs consultant and I asked her a ton of questions. But yes, what works for one doesn't work for all. Hell my hair is thick in the back and thin in the front so I'm mindful of what I do in the back, I can't do in the front. #thestruggles

I went with 2strand twists microlocs because it was more affordable. I wish that they could’ve been smaller but she probably knew that my hair wouldn’t be able to take the smaller locs.
