This video is actually pretty accurate. Working on code is 30% of the whole work day. The rest of it is discussing with your teammates (over lunch or whatever) about the work progress, new ideas, helping with issues, news in the domain etc. And this is what actually keeps everything going.

Maybe those are the hours in California, but this not my experience as New York software engineering who works with Wall Street clients. My first 2 years when I was unmarried and was doing my best to learn both the business and the code base, I would get up at 5:45 AM, get to work about 7:15 AM, work to 9 PM, get home at 10:30 PM, eat a quick dinner before going to sleep and start all over again. Plus, I would often work on Saturday and would sometimes get called by work in the middle of the night, because our systems ran overnight to get clients ready for the next trading systems, and it anything went wrong we needed to fix it ASAP. I cut my hours a bit when when future wife finished college and moved back to NYC, and now with two teen kids and in my 29th year working at my company, I get up at 6:15 AM to get to the office at 7:45 AM, and leave work at 5:20 PM to get home at 6:45 PM ( though during COVID-19 it was 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at home ). Of course, like most places where software developers work, there are no set hours, but I can get more done if I work more hours, and I've been rewarded well for all the extra work I've done.

It's just a weird type of job. Everyone seems to be isolated doing their own thing. There's no boss, meetings or structure of any kind. There's not even a company logo to be found anywhere. I mean, how do you even get paid? Like do you have to produce an actual program and people rate it's worth and you get a commission on it? Does a boss come up to you and say, I need you to write a tax program for people to do their income taxes on. And then just leaves you to it? Takes as long as it takes you to get it done. I just don't understand jobs like these at all. I don't see where the money comes from or the accountability to produce something of quality.

For me, a day as a software engineer would be much spent on writing code, debugging code, checking out tech sites for related info to problems that I am solving, responding to client e-mails, troubleshooting tech issues, writing a program in a language I rarely use to get an integration going.
Once in a while after I hit a snag and nothing is forthcoming, I create a pseudo account on Stackoverflow and enlist for help from the experts but I would be lucky if I do not get more than 2 downvotes to my Question whenever I login back to see if someone extended a helping hand.
My happy moments are on those days when I get to fix a bug or figure out how to do something that I have been struggling with in the past and on those days when a client with an interesting project signs up.
When I am not at my desk working like on weekends or like when taking a walk, my mind will still be conscious about a problem that I am still struggling with or hopefully wishing that backup script for doing database dumps is working fine.
Maybe I never picked good coding practices along the way to make my life much more easier and smooth but for me, the gratification is usually delayed sometimes even measured by the reduced number of client calls and e-mails about support and bugs reported incidences.
Maybe I should post a TH-cam video about my life as a DevOps Engineer because my roles overlap with other roles outside the domain of Software Engineering.

Yep, spot on, at least in my case, I work in the heavy industries, automotive fields and my life as a freelancer sw.e. system integrator is mostly, look for new projects, fight with the customers because most of the times they don't know what they want/don't understand what it's possible/not possible, want it cheeper, want it ready for the past month, want to keep the old code base, but changing everything. Fight with the lack of docs of many 3rd parties systems. Fight with my own lack of docs. Fight with wife because I spend more time/weekends in factories around the world than at home. Fight because people tend to forget to pay on time. Becoming bald. Having developed gastritis in my early 30s. Sometimes, much more in the past, spending my nights thinking to some new bugs/problems/discrepancies emerged during the day. It's a stressful life. But I guess it depends on the project one is tackling.
Still video like this one make me wonder, where is this shangri-la? I'm keeping missing it :| Friend of mine worked in the bank managent field and he run away after few years, good money, but waaaay too much stress.
So why I'm keeping going on? Masochism.

He may mean less effiecient, its just like typing with two fingers isn't per say wrong, but if you are writing code all day you wouldn't get anything done.

Super Sloth good point. i know writing code also requires more punctuation symbols than regular typing, which my technique causes me to struggle with

I should have had a job like this, but I ruined my career. I did not study hard , not work hard. And once I found it was difficult or I was unhappy. I would resign, resign and resign without confirming my next job. And now I am typing in my parents' house and have not been working for a long time. So sad.

Im in a same place as you were right now. I had so many great opportunities and worked with some great companies just a couple years back but I absolutely ruined everything complaining about how boring and unmeaningful my job was when millions others would kill to have it. I resigned without a proper plan, and now Im stuck in my parents home waiting for some companies to call me and hoping to secure a job asap because of desperation. I hope you fare better than I am right now.

Studies show that software engineers only get 2-4 hours of quality work in per day. Because it's mentally demanding work, that's how long we can keep our concentration at a high level before our brains get too tired or the work starts to bore us.
This fluctuates highly. If I'm at work and the work is BORING, I'll only work a couple hours. It's all I can take. But for interesting projects, I'll keep concentrated for about 6 hours out of the day.

    • @MarcoAfonso
      @MarcoAfonso 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yes! I can work 4 hours in morning non-stop, but in afternoon I get my brain tired after 3 hours and code quality decreases which Im aware and dislike. So maximum should be 6 hours/day with 2-3 breaks.

I know people who are Auditors and Legal advisors at one of the Big 4 financial companies and they work 10-12 hours to get better position and better payment. Their career is solely built on doing boring work to get your life on track. And they do not whine on the internet about it, because they make money while you search the web. Engineers are just lucky to have a carefree worklife because companies have less supply than demand on the market. But dont worry I can tell you, after 2 more generation on the workforce and all yo lil shits will compete with each other like any normal worker does and then you will have no 10-24 am going to work or you will have no job the next day. The people who live comfortable are falling the easiest when there is a change in the market. And dont expect the new generations to be anything else but engineers since its fuking hyped up as shit.
