  • Guys… getting a job as a new grad was so difficult. I documented my new grad job hunt process for software engineering, and I’m here to share it with you! This was definitely one of the most humbling experiences ever :’). If you’re a new grad watching this, know that I believe in you!!! You’ll get there, I promise. Just stick with it.
Some helpful resources during my recruitment process:
    - The Github New Grad Repo which lists a bunch of new grad SWE/Quant/PM roles (I'm linking the 2024 one) github.com/ReaVNaiL/New-Grad-...
    - The Grace Hopper Celebration which is the largest women in tech conference. If you're a student, your school will most likely fund your trip! ghc.anitab.org/
    - CodePath which is a non-profit organization that teaches FREE courses to current university students. I took their advanced technical interview prep one! There's also a career fair in October that matches you with potential employers. This is one of the best resources I used!!! www.codepath.org/
    - Leetcode which is a bank of coding questions similar to those asked during your technical interviews. leetcode.com/
    - Neetcode which provides some structure and amazing explanations for your Leetcode journey. This was very helpful!! neetcode.io/
    - Don't be afraid to cold message/email recruiters! Really put yourself out there - you never know what could happen!
    - And, this is gonna sound cheesy, but don't forget to believe in yourself. You're smart, and you're good at what you do. Never forget that - even when the process is absolutely terrible!
p.s. if you saw that i put the wrong time at the end, no you didn’t🙈

Hey guys! I'm Steph, a recent college grad who studied computer science and biology. I’m here to document myself growing up and trying to be better with hopes that you’ll find some entertainment or inspiration in it! Welcome to my little corner of the internet!

A few tips from a software engineer in big tech:
    - Right now, the job market is pretty bad for juniors, so don't lose hope keep applying and improve your resume(Add relevant key words to get past the pesky ATS systems)
    - Practice the blind 75 questions, those should be enough practice to solve any technical questions.
    - Do learn in depth how the language/Framework you use is better than other languages/Frameworks out there, it's always beneficial to show in depth knowledge then talk about a lot of things you have shallow knowledge in.
    - Always ask 2 why's to every concept you learn, keeps you curious and shows expertise in an interview setting.
    Good luck peeps, God speed!

sorry, but 75 questions is not enough. You need more like 300 these days to actually pass. Remember, you are competing with other people, not just trying to be satisfactory. You see all those other 30,000 people at the conference? You need to ask yourself what would make a hiring manager choose you over them, and be honest. This is the reality of job hunting.

    • @raysterfernandes4941

@@user-nj8lu8ld9e You need to do the blind 75 problems to learn the various techniques to tackle commonly asked coding problems, if you need more practice you can solve as many problems as your heart desires, but post 75 the reward to time ratio doesn't make sense to me atleast. Time could be better spent focusing on system design which is a different ball game in itself.

saturation + bad market + layoffs

    • @rodneyh1947
      @rodneyh1947 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +14

CS is over saturated. Don't major in CS. Just get a useful engineering degree like civil or electrical, then focus on CS as a minor or do a lot of CS projects while in school, take classes because your real resume in the software field is what you have done, not the courses you took or your degree. To get an interview you need to have projects and work under your belt either from school or personal projects. Also make sure you land internships while in school, you will be guaranteed a job if you do after college. CS is such a self-taught field, unless you are going to school for AI and machine learning at the graduate level , a degree in CS is a waste of money and time. A useful engineering degree is the best bang for your buck because CS can be easily self-taught if you are already in engineering. I am in electrical engineering and I worked as a data scientist a few years before I transitioned into a licensed Electrical Engineer work in power for utility companies. Coders will be gone when AI gets implemented, data science and AI/machine learning is where the jobs will be. Bottom line is you dont need a CS degree to work in computer science but you do need an engineering degree to work in engineering, so engineering is the best bang for your buck in college. Also with engineering you can teach (because STEM educators are in high demand, especially teaching physics (which is a prereq for all engineers, not so for CS majors), if you need back up profession to keep that income coming while you look for your software or engineering job.

@@rodneyh1947saying “AI will replace coders” is a little fearmongering. People in the industry say we’re many decades away from that, and even then, there’s going to be people required to interpret and interact with the AI that understand the code.

Also one bit of advice in preparing for a coding interview: in addition to leetcode, do mock interviews with someone. I only discovered this once I was interviewing folks at one of my jobs. Once you are the one giving hints, you get a better idea of what the interviewer is looking for. You get used to coding on the whiteboard and how to manage the time. Hope this is useful to someone.

Just went through this myself and I made it to the coveted tech side, don't give up. There are plenty of us along with other's who are more qualified that have been laid off. I have had an internship every year in college along with most of them being extended, well past their supposed end dates practically working at a FTE and it simply did not matter. Gotta be right place right time and have the skills when the time comes for it. Make sure to do LC to ensure that you don't get as nervous when solving complex problems. Study system design or whatever skills you put on your resume. Also make sure to apply early. I put all of my eggs into one basket and it fell through for me big time.. so even if you have a position secured or that you think it is. Apply to another position anyway and get the job you deserve!!

I got lucky because I was quick. I got a job from my internship. Luckily I focused on school because they first got interested because of my high GPA, then there were interviews, some pre exercises to see if can I learn new stuff/figure things out and present it. I tried my best and imo did well. I think my personality and genuine interest helped too (even though I'm socially anxious as hell LOL). That was stressful but I'm really happy I got in. The working community is nice and the things I learned in school are put into proper use now. I feel like I know enough to learn comfortably now, instead of struggling constantly. I started almost from a zero in 2020 (I knew only some basic js, html and css) so if I can do it, so can you.
This year has been tough for many my peers. I wish you good luck!
Edit: I just finished the video! I spoke too quickly. I'm so happy for you! Congratulations 😭🎉💞 Hard work payed off

Congrats on finding a job! I'm a junior software engineer at an MNC with a mechanical engineering degree. I know, it's not CS because I don't need one👀. I didn't know Leet code existed until after getting the job 😅. Just wanted to let you know that there's a lot more SWE roles outside of the app/web stuff and they pay really well! Some examples are: semicon machine OEMs (eg TEL, Besi,ASML), Embedded systems/controllers (eg FPGA, firmware, sensors), Networking (eg DDS, intel), RTOS related (eg QNX, VXworks, controls).
The SWE role exist before big tech and before the internet. Big tech has its ups and downs but there's always demand outside of big tech. I think app/web job market is brutal right now but the industries that I mentioned are actively hiring as they do not have enough SWE.

I don't know how I chanced on this video...I remember how stressful the uni grad role job application was. I had a role at Rabobank the year after graduating, but decided to quit as it wasn't fulfilling nor on the same path towards where I want to be. I took 3 months to apply to jobs FT alongside uni and managed to land 1 internship at the end of my uni degree at Salesforce and 2 grad roles at Goldman Sachs and Deloitte after applying to 90 jobs.
To the individual that might find this encouraging...I found that taking a break is helpful for your mental wellbeing. Recognise the effort and progress you've made applying to these jobs and know that it'll take time. No one knows how long it'll take, but if you're persistent enough and reflect on the feedback you're provided, you will get closer to your goals.
