Just what I was looking for (and more!) I knew about Concatenate and Split but I didn't know about the LEFT formula. So pleasantly surprised to have learned something entirely new in addition to refreshing my memory about concatenate!
When I "paste values only" the function is preserved and I'm unable to delete the original columns... EDIT - never mind. It seems that I had to paste the values in a new column completely outside the original column set? When I originally tried I inserted a new column left, which preserved the function for some reason.
One thing to know about this is... if you have your headings in the first row and your data following, this will not work. I had to make a new Google Sheet, paste the two columns in there and then do it, then copy and paste it back in.

When I copy and then double click (to copy it down), nothing happens... I'm trying to avoid repeating the formula over and over...help! :)
try just grabbing the bottom right corner of the cell holding the formula and then drag down.
