Just one of the many things that make Mincho one of the best young guitarist today is her simply incredible phrasing. She never follows the "norm" when she plays and her style keeps you guessing what she will do next. Kanami just continues to impress.
THE NON FICTION DAYS was written when Band Made was still outsourcing its composition and lyrics to others, but there is no doubt that the experience of those days has led to the creativity of these girls today.
Non-Fiction Days and the whole of New Beginnings and Brand New Maid are the songs the Maids chose themselves before they were cut loose on their own, and one thing not to overlook, they chose well. These two albums really set them on the current arc, which as we know is nothing less than total World Domination. And to your point, they played so well so early, they really did come in with so much talent and just look at them now.
Kanami's guitar work is what got me into Band-Maid beginning with Thrill. Domination is still my number 1. Kanami now has 2 signature guitars, the Addictone and PRS.
The Non Fiction Days use to be their go-to closer. When the song ended, the Maids would give Miku her few seconds to say goodbye, bow, and then all quickly walk off stage. The crowd felt like they'd been run over by a speeding freight train of awesomeness. It all felt so good and the fans wanted more! But they were leaving... until next time! Thx. Jim & Grin!
Onset to me is one of the greatest rock instrumentals of all time and I imagine Kanami's guitar being the "vocals"... really enjoyed seeing both of you vibing hard to it. In The Non Fiction Days video you can tell it's quite early also as the camera doesn't pan to close ups of Miku playing the guitar. She really was in her seedling stage as a guitarist. She certainly has come a long way. Before she played the Zemaitus guitar she played a Rickenbacker. Even back then you could hear Band-Maid's and Kanami's distinctive styles Onset has a special place in my heart as it was the 3rd song I heard from Band-Maid. You can tell already how far Miku's playing had progressed. My jaw dropped when I heard Akane on this track. Kanami was definitely in the zone. The shots of her with her head tilted back and eyes closed are ethereal to me. My introduction to them was that concert and Play was the first song. I was hooked instantly.
So far the most musically amazing song I've listened to by Band-Maid. I don't think its on Spotify so ive listened to it 50 times on TH-cam. Thank you for watching!!!

"ONSET" - Also known as "Saiki"s Pee Break" haha. Love your comment of "Old School BAND MAID". Couldn't agree more - love the "Old School" stuff. Funny when you consider their ages (early 30's). An as TG said, so much more to come including songs that don't have clips. Please don't shy away from songs without clips (Especially in the "Old School Era) because as you are both aware, they just don't write bad songs an they have PLENTY of hidden gems.
The story behind this video is that it was shot on a wind-swept beach in Japan on a cold winter day. Japan's latitude is the same as New England. The Maids had to wear those thin maid costumes for the shots but immediately after them they put on full-length insulated coats. For the night shots, the fire was meant to add light and drama to the video. Unfortunately, Kanami and Akane got too close to the fire and got their outfits singed. There are photos and outtakes from the video shoot that verify that. These Maids are rock troopers. Their motto seems to be, "whatever it takes to get our music out to our fans!"
Non fiction days was Released: 2016 on the Brand New Maid Album, so they were only a band for 3 yearsat this point. Unfortunately you can't get ONSET on any album...it's only performed live. I was blessed to be in Houston 22 where they played it back to back with "from now on" front row in front of the assassin.

I can't think of two better songs for you to do a doubleheader reaction. Non-Fiction Days has always been a favorite of mine, and Onset was the first Band Maid song I ever heard. As I have said before, I love instrumentals, and now in my head I'm playing an instrumental of Non-Fiction Days and it sounds perfect, lol. And I have to watch Onset at least 7 or 8 times a week because it is just perfection in an instrumental. It's not especially complicated, but the technical performance of the group in this song is unmatched, even better than From Now On, which is a different type of instrumental. And everyone gets their time to shine in Onset, which I love. Misa's solo is just sublime, even giving semi-jazz vibes. Kanami's solo, to me, was pure Southern Rock and I could just picture her up on stage with Gary Rossington and Steve Gaines and Ronny Van Zant. Miku shows her continued precision and style at rhythm guitar and coming into her own as a first-rate guitarist. Akane is well, Akane, working her magic on her kit and being the backbone of the group. Her actions as band leader do not get enough props in my opinion. Band Maid has played Onset at every show I've been to and at two I was right up front by Kanami and got to see her dazzling skills. Getting back to Non-Fictions Days, even though it's not one of Kanami's compositions, hers and Akane's arrangement turned it into pure, unadulterated Band Maid !!!!! And as always, GREAT REACTION !!!!!!
There’s a time signature change too. From 4/4 to 5/4 back to 4/4 in Onset. Oh, Gringa, did you notice Miku-chan and Saiki-san’s makeup in the non-fiction days? The blush on? is perfect. And in Saiki-san’s case it was under her eyes instead of cheeks.
Another banger from the before times, before Mincho was the driving force behind the writing. They didn't have as many absolute bangers as they do these days but, like Freezer and a few others, when they did hit they hit damned hard. Onset and Without Holding Back are my two favourite instrumentals of theirs
I felt the same way when I discovered them through thrill as a newly released MV back in 2014. "A force to be reckoned with" and through time with each new MV after Thrill, albums and live performances they just continued to blow my mind.
The non-fiction is a great banger from the early Maids period, I mean, before they were given the freedom to compose their own songs. Onset is the second song I saw by Band-Maid because after Thrill I wanted to know how they played live. OMG. My jaw dropped like a wolf in a Tex Avery cartoon. These girls rock like badasses, I thought. That day, I became a Maidiac. Kanami never mentioned Andy Timmons as an influence (I don't know him, sorry). Larry Carlton, Carlos Santana, Eddy Van Halen, yes but maybe she knows him anyway? Miku does a great job after only 5 years of practicing her rhythm guitar and Band-Maid's sound owes a lot to her. Been a minute since I watched this video and I was smiling at all the changes. Addictone, 4 string bass, all maidettes as you said. Even Kanamis solo style was different but still awesome.

A Band-Maid song a day keeps the doldrums away! TJ and LG there is no need for you to apologize from being behind on Band-maid music. There are so many great songs to react to. One of their cool early songs (which unfortunately they didn't write and doesn't have an official music video) is "Freezer". There is a great collage video of the song by PinD of the song, so you won't be bored listening to it. You can also see early on this one had a Kanami signature on it with her guitar.
One of Kanami's major guitar influences is the great jazz guitarist, Larry Carlton. She credits Carlton, Santana, and Chopin as her influences. Sadly, she does not pay homage to Akane's sacred TinyHat-san.
Onset is a great instrumental, but i like the aggressive attitude in From Now On a bit more. Both are fantastic. Miku does an amazing job coming in over the top when Mincho is tapping. Really fills out the sound.
It was very cold the day they filmed NFD...and they kept warm in the smudgepot fires they had for effect. So between NFD's cold and the 37C day they recorded "Influencer," they are a certified all-weather band. 🙂
Two "fun facts" about the shooting of the "Non-Fiction Days" video: Akane's dress caught on fire (the crew doused it almost immediately); the winds off the ocean were bone-chilling enough that the Ladies had to wear "arctic protection suits" when they were not shooting, so the production pattern was freeze-to-death, get warm, freeze-to-death, get warm, et cetera. Circa 2018-19 there were pictures of this on the Net; I have no idea if this is still so.
In the first song Misa has a 4-string bass. I think it's high time she switched to 6 strings. 😀 Of course Kanami knows Andy Timmons. If you watch Herman Li's (DragonForce) streams, you'll see that 3 years ago, right after two streams with Kanami and Miku, he released a video with Andy Timmons.

I was watching your reaction to FREEDOM again (yeah, we do that, us subscribers - or at least we do when the reactions are excellent, like yours) and realised that there are a few other hard-rocking songs like FREEDOM that you've yet to see. The NON-FICTION DAYS mv was on the list but I see that the likes of PLAY, DICE, REAL EXISTENCE and BLOOMING haven't been asked for yet. Or have they? Is there any way you can let us know what has already been requested? The Non-Fiction Days wasn't written by them (it's from 2016) but you can clearly see that they were going all-in with this kind of rock without looking back at their more "poppy" stuff. How great you both are! I think you are inside what is called ‘pigeon hole’. If you don't mind a detail. That guitar playing at 23:50 is not Miku. It's a track triggered by Akane on her pad or maybe by the tech guy on stage left who triggers her intros, etc. Kanami has his own technician, the great Kondo, who even changes the effect when Kanami is far away from his pedalboard. About a year ago YT showed me Thrill for some reason and I was intrigued. Then I saw Onset and that was it, Maidiac for life. 8 inches of pure rock and roll.
Thankfully CFCs were removed from hairspray or Miku would have created a new hole in the ozone layer by using all that hairspray to make her twin tails so bushy. (LOL) Kanami blazed that Addictone guitar on her TNFD solo. Jimmy, have you ever played through a Divided By 13 amp like Miku is playing in the Onset video? I think they would be considered a boutique amp hand-made in California. I have never seen one in person. Is there such a thing as a Divided By 13 profile for your Kemper? The Maids do have DigiTech Drop pedals in their pedal array to play in different keys without having to switch guitars. Andy Timmons is from my hometown. I have seen him in various local bands. Long after he had made it big he and a group of friends played at a local bar and they took requests all night. They would discuss whether they knew the song enough to play it and then give it a shot. They didn't get all the way through a couple of them but it was really fun to watch.

"Onset' aka Saiki's bathroom break is their first instrumental. It was probably to rest her voice before her throat surgery. But there's also 'Without Holding Back', it's an instrumentals. Kanami's old guitar was an Addictone Super Strat. You can always tell what era of BAND-MAID it is by their Outfits and their gear, especially very early like 'Thrill' and 'Alone', because Miku still has the Rickenbacker. Her first Tele Style Zemaitis was in 'Daydreaming'. But by 'Before Yesterday'. And MISA still has her 4 String Jazz bass in this 'Non Fiction Days', but you can see in 'Onset' she's switched to the 5 String Black Smoker with that Low B. But yeah, leave all 8 inches in. LOL!!!

In The Non Fiction Days video you can tell it's quite early also as the camera doesn't pan to close ups of Miku playing the guitar. She really was in her seedling stage as a guitarist. She certainly has come a long way. Before she played the Zemaitus guitar she played a Rickenbacker. Even back then you could hear Band-Maid's and Kanami's distinctive styles
Onset has a special place in my heart as it was the 3rd song I heard from Band-Maid. You can tell already how far Miku's playing had progressed. My jaw dropped when I heard Akane on this track.
Kanami was definitely in the zone. The shots of her with her head tilted back and eyes closed are ethereal to me.
My introduction to them was that concert and Play was the first song. I was hooked instantly.

An as TG said, so much more to come including songs that don't have clips. Please don't shy away from songs without clips (Especially in the "Old School Era) because as you are both aware, they just don't write bad songs an they have PLENTY of hidden gems.
The story behind this video is that it was shot on a wind-swept beach in Japan on a cold winter day. Japan's latitude is the same as New England. The Maids had to wear those thin maid costumes for the shots but immediately after them they put on full-length insulated coats. For the night shots, the fire was meant to add light and drama to the video. Unfortunately, Kanami and Akane got too close to the fire and got their outfits singed. There are photos and outtakes from the video shoot that verify that. These Maids are rock troopers. Their motto seems to be, "whatever it takes to get our music out to our fans!"
Non fiction days was Released: 2016 on the Brand New Maid Album, so they were only a band for 3 yearsat this point. The writing credits for Band-Maid's song "the non-fiction days" are:

Great way to start my day, with two kick ass Band-Maid songs!! Yes, Non-Fiction Days was Mincho's Addictone Guitar days. I love the guitar tone, and what a solo! If you watch MISA closely during her solo, you'll see the best view of her "pick tuck" technique switching from pick to slap. Woo Hoo for the double feature maid songs to come!!

Unfortunately you can't get ONSET on any album...it's only performed live. I was blessed to be in Houston 22 where they played it back to back with "from now on" front row in front of the assassin.

I can't think of two better songs for you to do a doubleheader reaction. Non-Fiction Days has always been a favorite of mine, and Onset was the first Band Maid song I ever heard. As I have said before, I love instrumentals, and now in my head I'm playing an instrumental of Non-Fiction Days and it sounds perfect, lol. And I have to watch Onset at least 7 or 8 times a week because it is just perfection in an instrumental. It's not especially complicated, but the technical performance of the group in this song is unmatched, even better than From Now On, which is a different type of instrumental.
And everyone gets their time to shine in Onset, which I love. Misa's solo is just sublime, even giving semi-jazz vibes. Kanami's solo, to me, was pure Southern Rock and I could just picture her up on stage with Gary Rossington and Steve Gaines and Ronny Van Zant. Miku shows her continued precision and style at rhythm guitar and coming into her own as a first-rate guitarist. Akane is well, Akane, working her magic on her kit and being the backbone of the group. Her actions as band leader do not get enough props in my opinion. Band Maid has played Onset at every show I've been to and at two I was right up front by Kanami and got to see her dazzling skills.
Getting back to Non-Fictions Days, even though it's not one of Kanami's compositions, hers and Akane's arrangement turned it into pure, unadulterated Band Maid !!!!! And as always, GREAT REACTION !!!!!!
There’s a time signature change too. From 4/4 to 5/4 back to 4/4 in Onset. Oh, Gringa, did you notice Miku-chan and Saiki-san’s makeup in the non-fiction days? The blush on? is perfect. And in Saiki-san’s case it was under her eyes instead of cheeks.
Another banger from the before times, before Mincho was the driving force behind the writing. They didn't have as many absolute bangers as they do these days but, like Freezer and a few others, when they did hit they hit damned hard.

I felt the same way when I discovered them through thrill as a newly released MV back in 2014. "A force to be reckoned with" and through time with each new MV after Thrill, albums and live performances they just continued to blow my mind.

The non-fiction is a great banger from the early Maids period, I mean, before they were given the freedom to compose their own songs. Onset is the second song I saw by Band-Maid because after Thrill I wanted to know how they played live. OMG. My jaw dropped like a wolf in a Tex Avery cartoon. These girls rock like badasses, I thought. That day, I became a Maidiac. Kanami never mentioned Andy Timmons as an influence (I don't know him, sorry). Larry Carlton, Carlos Santana, Eddy Van Halen, yes but maybe she knows him anyway? Miku does a great job after only 5 years of practicing her rhythm guitar and Band-Maid's sound owes a lot to her. A Band-Maid song a day keeps the doldrums away! TJ and LG there is no need for you to apologize from being behind on Band-maid music. There are so many great songs to react to. One of their cool early songs (which unfortunately they didn't write and doesn't have an official music video) is "Freezer". There is a great collage video of the song by PinD of the song, so you won't be bored listening to it. You can also see early on this one had a Kanami signature on it with her guitar.

One of Kanami's major guitar influences is the great jazz guitarist, Larry Carlton. She credits Carlton, Santana, and Chopin as her influences. Sadly, she does not pay homage to Akane's sacred TinyHat-san.
Onset is a great instrumental, but i like the aggressive attitude in From Now On a bit more. Both are fantastic. Miku does an amazing job coming in over the top when Mincho is tapping. Really fills out the sound.
It was very cold the day they filmed NFD...and they kept warm in the smudgepot fires they had for effect. So between NFD's cold and the 37C day they recorded "Influencer," they are a certified all-weather band. 🙂

Two "fun facts" about the shooting of the "Non-Fiction Days" video: Akane's dress caught on fire (the crew doused it almost immediately); the winds off the ocean were bone-chilling enough that the Ladies had to wear "arctic protection suits" when they were not shooting, so the production pattern was freeze-to-death, get warm, freeze-to-death, get warm, et cetera. Circa 2018-19 there were pictures of this on the Net; I have no idea if this is still so.
In the first song Misa has a 4-string bass. I think it's high time she switched to 6 strings. 😀
Of course Kanami knows Andy Timmons. If you watch Herman Li's (DragonForce) streams, you'll see that 3 years ago, right after two streams with Kanami and Miku, he released a video with Andy Timmons.

I was watching your reaction to FREEDOM again (yeah, we do that, us subscribers - or at least we do when the reactions are excellent, like yours) and realised that there are a few other hard-rocking songs like FREEDOM that you've yet to see. The NON-FICTION DAYS mv was on the list but I see that the likes of PLAY, DICE, REAL EXISTENCE and BLOOMING haven't been asked for yet. Or have they? Is there any way you can let us know what has already been requested? Not sure how that would worl but just a thought as I'm sure I'm not the only one with a need to buy coffees and see you react to the other remaining 80 or so songs of theirs you haven't seen & heard yet! And the live versions...and the acoustic ones...the spin-off shows....etc, etc. So glad you got to see the amazing ONSET live and the fantastic MV of TNFD and that list from Mr O'Furniture has some other beauties on it (ie, all of them) that we'll enjoy your reactions to. The Non-Fiction Days wasn't written by them (it's from 2016) but you can clearly see that they were going all-in with this kind of rock without looking back at their more "poppy" stuff. I think this is one of the best not-written-by-them Band-Maid songs, absolutely
As for Onset, well... a masterpiece that it has some kind of "electronic-techno" feel to it, idk how to describe it but when you listen to it it's like going into a trance: you mind elevates and just floats above your body LOL

If you don't mind a detail. That guitar playing at 23:50 is not Miku. It's a track triggered by Akane on her pad or maybe by the tech guy on stage left who triggers her intros, etc.
Kanami has his own technician, the great Kondo, who even changes the effect when Kanami is far away from his pedalboard.

The Maids do have DigiTech Drop pedals in their pedal array to play in different keys without having to switch guitars.
Andy Timmons is from my hometown. I have seen him in various local bands. Long after he had made it big he and a group of friends played at a local bar and they took requests all night. They would discuss whether they knew the song enough to play it and then give it a shot. They didn't get all the way through a couple of them but it was really fun to watch.
Man that's so cool to hear about Andy Timmons! I use a pitch fork for tuning and harmonies live. As far as a Dividend by 13 profile for the Kemper out there im sure if you dig far enough in the forums someone perhaps posted one or made a tone pack for sale. If i could get my hands on her Rig id love to profile her exact settings into my lunchbox lol. Ive never played out of one of them but i love that crunchy sound 🤘🤘😃🎸

"Onset' aka Saiki's bathroom break is their first instrumental. It was probably to rest her voice before her throat surgery. But there's also 'Without Holding Back', it's an instrumentals. Kanami's old guitar was an Addictone Super Strat. You can always tell what era of BAND-MAID it is by their Outfits and their gear, especially very early like 'Thrill' and 'Alone', because Miku still has the Rickenbacker. Her first Tele Style Zemaitis was in 'Daydreaming'. But by 'Before Yesterday'. And MISA still has her 4 String Jazz bass in this 'Non Fiction Days', but you can see in 'Onset' she's switched to the 5 String Black Smoker with that Low B. But yeah, leave all 8 inches in. LOL!!!
