I grew up listening to Minnie, I was 10yrs old almost 11 when this song came out.. my oldest sister was 8 months pregnant with her first child and moved back in with us temporarily because her husband was in the army and she was almost due.. she slept in the room next to mine and we would listen to this song on the radio that was in my room and they would always play this song around the same time every evening and everytime we heard it my sister and I were captivated. This was Dec 1974, my nephew was born Jan 10th 1975... Everytime I hear this song, it reminds me of my beloved big Sister and my nephew who just turned 50. Precious Memories!!❤😊
I remember when this song came out in 1975. Had never heard anyone sing so high before. I know she has an incredible range, I think it is 4 octave & uses what they call the whistle register which is considered the highest register of the voice.
She was opera trained and a natural whistle soprano. She took a job on reception at Chess Records and sang all day till some one noticed. Sadly we lost her too soon to breast cancer. This is so beautiful. I was a teenage boy when I first saw the video and have been in love with her ever since. It melts me inside.
She has a five octave range and uses the " whistle register " which is the highest register the voice is capable of. The actress Maya Rudolph is her daughter and she references her by name towards the end of the song.
I heard this song on the radio well before I ever saw Minnie Ripperton perform it on TV. I had no idea that high-pitched sound came from her as I assumed it was from some instrument.
Minnie Ripperton is the mother of Maya Rudolph, then actress and comedian from SNL ( Saturday Night Live). This song is about her baby girl Maya. Very sadly, we lost Minnie to breast cancer at a very young age and Maya was just a little girl when her mother died.
It's so gratifying to watch you react to something so intensely that was part of the soundtrack of my youth. She had such an incredible voice. That song stopped me in my tracks every time I heard it.
There were several, weekend, late-night musical shows. One is Midnight Special, another, Night-Flight, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, & ???? ... maybe someone else can help me, here. In the case of Midnight Special, the introduction is given by Wolfman (his voice) Jack, a famous DJ.
that was talent, ur watchn a very talented singer wit a big heart n sadly lots of pain in her life, but choose 2 sing of joy!. minnie influenced others n u can hear that in modern singing. 2 me she sings vis live btr van v recording. maria carey i tink coverd vis n others.
Ever heard Mariah Carey? This was way before auto tune. I'm not young and I remember listening to this song on a summer day, playing with my doll and trying to sing like her. I failed.
Sarah, why is you screen size so small? Do you know that you can stop copyright blocking, simply posting a copyright disclaimer, just before posting the video. Then you can increase your screen size and run the video right through.
Well, there was no autotune then, and autotune wouldn't have done the trick. Minnie Riperton could just sing notes so high even dogs couldn't hear them. And we lost her way too soon. I also went to your main page to see which other artists you have covered. You have covered many of the newer ones, but there is one missing who you really need to react to, she being Lucy Thomas. She's more than amazing. I'll send you a link to her latest release, an original song rather than a cover (although her cover of "Unchained Melody" is the best ever, just sayin'). Here is the link to "Don't Walk Away", an award winning love song in 2024. th-cam.com/video/sv69cC6KGJI/w-d-xo.html
So I'm not clear. You are saying you enjoyed it? She died young. You can find video with daughter Maya talking about her mother and losing her. It was tough.
We were so lucky to have Minnie shine for us for the short time she did (RIP). And this performance was 100% live! Amazing!!
When she was singing Maya, Maya, she was singing about her daughter Maya Rudolph of Saturday night live .peace

The voice of a angel

I know how you feel. When I first heard this in '75 , I couldn't believe it either. But in this performance she goes even higher. Incredible.
@richardmaguire9536 I could of sworn it was throat cancer.
Some of the truly gifted among us are only here for a short time. Minnie was indeed one
I only knew the recorded studio version, and I love it. This live performance is amazing, and your reaction is wonderful.
Me too. I have heard it so many times. But this live version blew my mind.
She has a five octave range and uses the " whistle register " which is the highest register the voice is capable of. The actress Maya
Rudolph is her daughter and she references her by name towards the end of the song.
I always wondered what she was saying, thank you 😊
She's also Maya Rudolph's mother the comedienne from SNL. And Maya can sing very well as well.
MINNIE RIPERTON (1947 - 1979) - an incredible voice that went forever quiet way, way too soon...💜
This emphasises the talent we had available to us in the '60s and 70s. Brilliant singers and musicians, who were focused on the music.
Yes, being from that era, we absolutely did! So glad some of you are having the pleasure to hear it!
I heard this song on the radio well before I ever saw Minnie Ripperton perform it on TV. I had no idea that high-pitched sound came from her as I assumed it was from some instrument.
The first time I heard Minnie Ripperton hit that high note, my pants split right up the back! 😜✌️😅😝🤣🌹
Minnie had an incredible voice. She also has a famous daughter - Maya Rudolph.
No, autotune was not invented until September 19th, 1997, by Antares Audio Technologies.
Minnie Ripperton was the real deal.
Minnie Ripperton is the mother of Maya Rudolph, then actress and comedian from SNL ( Saturday Night Live). This song is about her baby girl Maya. Very sadly, we lost Minnie to breast cancer at a very young age and Maya was just a little girl when her mother died.
Great Reaction 👍🙏💯😎 No Autotune
A great old song.Stay safe young lady.
It's so gratifying to watch you react to something so intensely that was part of the soundtrack of my youth. She had such an incredible voice. That song stopped me in my tracks every time I heard it.
God blessed us with this a angel ❤ and thank goodness we can still enjoy what she left us with.
Yup. On the radio all the time. I was 12. Can't believe it now, couldn't believe it then!
I had the same reaction, as a 17 year old, watching this on the Midnight Special in 1975😁😉
True Song Bird. Gone too soon.
Back in the days, sweet Sarah, back in the days.
Love this one.
👍😁❤️
At the end when she sings Maya Maya, she is singing about her daughter, Maya Rudolph, from Saturday night live!
😂 the whistle note gets them every time!!
Minnie was God sent...just saying:)
She was a lovely singer. 😊

THATS Maya Rudolf's mother...for anyone who didnt know..
She is sing about his daughter, Maya. Maya is Maya Rudolph.
Amazing 👏 Back when people could really sing..No autotune needed..Autotune came out in 1997
Sadly, Minnie died 4 years after this from breast cancer in 1979😞.
that was talent, ur watchn a very talented singer wit a big heart n sadly lots of pain in her life, but choose 2 sing of joy!. minnie influenced others n u can hear that in modern singing. 2 me she sings vis live btr van v recording. maria carey i tink coverd vis n others.
That is what Will Hunting would sound like if he could sing
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😍😎
She is Maya Rudolph's mother. Just a factoid.
I really love this song, 😊 a little corny, but a great artists.
No sweetie, there was no need for autocue then, because the artistes had talent, unlike nowasays.
❤❤❤
Ever heard Mariah Carey? This was way before auto tune. I'm not young and I remember listening to this song on a summer day, playing with my doll and trying to sing like her. I failed.
In an era When you had to have pure talent
I actually like that song pretty well. Live versions often times just suck. That was weird.
Before Mariah, there was Minnie.
Sarah, why is you screen size so small? Do you know that you can stop copyright blocking, simply posting a copyright disclaimer, just before posting the video. Then you can increase your screen size and run the video right through.
oh tink her husband was playing v guitar tink vey wrote it together?, maya is ver new daughter. touching song n preformance

Mariah Carey can sing like this - whistle tones
So I'm not clear. You are saying you enjoyed it? She died young. You can find video with daughter Maya talking about her mother and losing her. It was tough.
Autotune? Minnie??? Not hardly my friend. ❤
So im supposed to believe that you've never heard this song?
