  • The moon has probably inspired poets since the dawn of the human species. It is a silvery, soothing, mysterious, erratic presence in our skies. Moon Views is a short song cycle based on three poems that do not share much besides being human views of the same subject, the moon. They are actually of very different colors, ranging from the elegiac "Hymn to the Moon", to the strange luminous imagery of "The Moon was but a Chin of Gold", to the disturbing darkness of "Moon Fishing". They are sung in alternating stanzas from each poem.
Composed in 2021, the premiere performance was delayed by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Recorded in Paris, France, February 23, 2023. Sylvie Robert, mezzo-soprano, Angela d’Elia, flute.
Hymn to the Moon, by Mary Wortley Montagu, from the 1805 collection Letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montague.
Moon Fishing, by Lisel Mueller, from Alive Together: New and Selected Poems, published by Louisiana State University Press. 1996. Used with permission by Louisiana State University Press.
