The more I listen the more I'm convinced that this is THE best version of Casta Diva. I've listened to Callas, Sutherland, Bartoli, Netrebko, and Caballe. Even though Fleming took some liberties with her interpretation, the fact that she does it with such ease, not to mention she sings the lyrics like how one would recite a poem, not forcing her mouth to be round all the time like Sutherland or Caballe which makes the language incomprehensible and makes the singing sounds like mouse squeaking, shows her superiority and naturalness of the Bel Canto style. She brought me to tears each time I listen to this. Kudos and I will definitely recommend this to any Casta Vita fan who hasn't heard it.
cb88 that's just your perception. I don't understand Italian but when I listen to Renee Fleming, I didn't care. It's really something so beautiful that understanding of words is not needed to understand the beauty. Her vowels and consonants are also all extremely clear, clear enough that obviously it's not how people would normally speak. For example, most people do not roll the "r" on a word that ends with "--ra." she's the only one who does it very clearly: "---rrrra" So I know that it's an r instead of an l (which is also very difficult to do, especially when you go high in register, rolling the r that way makes it harder to sing, so it shows her more difficult technique), which in Opera singing, unless you truly understand the language, would make it very ambiguous and hard to distinguish. The fact that she can sing something that communicates to people who DON'T understand the language, is no easy feat and a tremendous accomplishment. When I listen to Maria Callas? Nada, and her overly sharp upper register and wide vibrato just hurts my ears, if you want me to be even more honest.
cb88 LOL, you are SO wrong you don't even know. I made an effort to learn Italian and I deeply care about the language. What you said was regarding how people would normally speak comparing with words in singing. That's of course different. For example, when Americans sing their songs that they understand, they say: "lerv" instead of "laave" for the word "love." So normally, people say "lerv" not "laave," but actually, "laave" would actually be more correct and more poetic (nobody nowadays speak like actors in Amadeus, but the English in Amadeus is much more proper, beautiful, and poetic), and that's how the word such as "love" is sung in classical music and opera. Not only this, but it makes people who are not acquainted with the language natively understand better. That's what Renee Fleming is doing here. And actually, that's how you would eventually to learn how to speak properly. There is a reason why non-native English speakers sometimes speak even more proper English than native English speakers. For example, I don't say "iilly" anymore for "Italy" which is how American English normally and naturally pronounces the word. Now I actually say "I-ta-ly" with a very pronounced "t." People who are native speakers think it's weird, but people who deeply care about learning and understanding English, but are not native speakers (including Italians) appreciate that tremendously.
cb88 "that I am so wrong about my "own" language I don't even know?" No, you were so wrong that just because I'm an American, or that I don't care that I don't understand what was sung, therefore I don't care about the language of Italian as sung in opera. "Sutherland, Caballe, Birgit Nielson (who was Swedish) and especially Callas can be understood by an Italian" Well of course, I can understand people who sing in English, whether their diction is clear or not. "All your teachings are nonsense, it is obvious that words are sung differently in opera from how they ara normally pronounced, but this just a stretch." What are my "stretches?" I'm telling you FACTUAL things. I've given you examples, so what's your point? "All the sopranos I have mentioned can be understood." By a native speaker, OF COURSE!!! It's the NON-NATIVE speakers who NEED clearer diction that sometimes even deviate from how people would normally speak, or are you just not understanding all the examples that I've given you? "I assure you that if an Italian soprano messes with French, English or German pieces I'd make the same comment." non-sequitur. No be clear, I actually never said that Renee Fleming sung the Italian better than Maria Callas (Maria Callas is Greek after all, so she does have an advantage), or that she has the best Italian diction. She has one of the more CLEARER diction for somebody who is a non-native speaker to be able to differentiate, that's point. Now you say that other sopranos have more beautiful Italian and sings them more correctly and with more native-like nuances. Okay, I'm not going to argue with you on that. That wasn't my original point. Of course there are people who have better diction. Renee Fleming just has one of the more clear ones for a non-native ear. If you are a native speaker you would of course look for more naturalness rather than overly clear vowels and consonants. that was my point.
cb88 Okay, I see what you are saying. For me she sings definitely clearer than Sutherland or Caballe, both of whom I cannot even make out one word. But if she makes these mistakes or her nuances are just not correct in some of the more advanced words. Then obviously it's not correct. But I can make out more words from what she sings than some other sopranos, that's all. She may make more mistakes however, then I wouldn't notice that.

I've just finished listening to Radnovsky (sp?), Callas, Sutherland, Netrebenko, and now Fleming sing this aria.. They're all beautiful and sublime, but in different ways, and i'm not enough of a musician to say how.
I love that in these classical settings the audience is respectful to the artists and wait until the price in completely done before showing their gratitude. Nothing bothers me more than watching a legendary performance while having crazed fans scream their lungs out.
There’s a time, place and obligation for the opera audience to go completely insane. After Dame Joan Sutherland’s now legendary debut performance of Lucia di Lammermoor at Covent Garden in 1959, the audience just couldn’t help it. It was, and remains, one of operas’ most miraculous performances.
Renee Fleming is a national treasure, no matter what she sings. She could sing the phone book and make it beautiful! I wish I could’ve seen her on stage as Norma. Such a fantastic and beautiful voice.
Never heard of this amazing woman... After this performance I will never forget her! Thank you to whomever told you yes. Angelic voice. Superb talent. Wow!

Goosebumps from the very first note! Wow! She’s amazing! She’s so beautiful! She’s gifted and talented! I love you Renee Fleming. ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏
I think I'm finally starting to understand why my English teacher in high school said his favorite soprano was Fleming... What a blessing on this Earth
That trill at the end...WOW!
That broke my brain. She is a miracle.
i dont have words but i have to let something because this was an unique experience, sublime
Wow. An amzing voice...

Beautiful song
Абсолютно непревзойдённое исполнение и, наверное, лучшее из ее собственных Дивное Прелестное

Лучшая после Кабалье.
Beautiful, and with such great sound coming through my tablet. A joy. ❤❤❤
WHAT a wonderful champagne dress!!!! Oh, I love it so much on her. Perfection all around.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING in every way, without equal. Bravo!
Величайшая певица! Необычайная природа голоса, богатый обертонами , и конечно же - талант , огранённый великолепной школой, мастерством и бесконечным трудолюбием))❤️
Heavenlygorgeous woman😏

волшебно, великолепно глубоко и прочувствованно! Изумительно! Брависсимо! Очень эмоционально!
Брависсимо, очень верно
Little sis has the unique mastery! A richness and depth that is truly other worldly. She took me “way over there”. PWG
Casta diva is not all the way through gentle singing but also dramatic explosion. She pretty much does everything equal cause her voice is not a dramatic one . So generally it doesn't matter that she sings soft all the way ,this is a masterpiece of inner dramatic contrast.
Renee is so filled with ight and beauty. just love her voice!
SHE IS WONDERFUL, AMAZING, TO BEHOLD HER VOICE ! IT LIVES FOREVER SONG SING AS HERS, ! EVERLASTING ! SO BEAUTIFUL !
Sans aucun doute, une voix incomparable, une pure diva, un son cristallin, une rondeur incroyable, sa voix ne grince jamais dans les aigus absolument splendides et une puissance émotionnelle rare......
Absolutely mindblowing and truly gorgeous performance.Goosebumps all over.
brilliant and she loves to sing ,the smile is always there
This is for me the special performance , the best of the best CASTA DIVA 🙏Thank you 🎩👌
Thank you for posting this - her beautiful sound is glorious in this aria. I was in the feuer downstairs at the Met for her first Metropolitan Verdi role - it was sold out - matinee Saturday - we listened over the speakers - (pretended I was waiting for someone to come out!)when she transitioned from her romantic Mozart, Strauss repertoire to the Verdi ❣️🎼. She spoke to my daughter when we were in line - beautiful lady. Glorious Verdi singing. ❤🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
The warmest, most sensitive voice with a gorgeous colorato the right emotion! No. 1 in the world as far as I'm concerned!! My favorite soprano in this genre by far!!
She is one of the best but try listening to Sondra Radvanosky too here: th-cam.com/video/yhsOOUj6r38/w-d-xo.html
I have no words to describe her voice, the only thing that comes to mind is spectacular !!!
Close, very close to the emotions i get from listening to Callas. Only those two really pierce my soul.
Isn' t it the most beautiful version of this masterpiece?
Absolutely beautifu!!l.. I'm listening in 2020.. breath taking.. just awesome!!
TH-cam must add the "i'm listening in [year]" button that appears when you writing comment to music video
Is even more powerful in these challenging times

Shuuutt..🙏
love the opening scene!
Control so chillingly divine; listening in 2020 and finding my confined quarters still allow the soaring of my soul to great thanksgiving for this life.
So wonderfully expressed.
Yeah she’s the dogs bollocks !!!
Magnifique!!!!!!
Renee is my favourite soprano of all time! The most exquisite tone, soft, yet powerful. This rendition of Bellini's Aria is the most beautifully sung, by Renee, than any other soprano. My favourite Aria and she sings in the most beautiful setting of the Palace of the Tzars! What could be better?
A gorgeous aria, gorgeously sung. Renee Fleming is one of the greatest lyric coloraturas of our time or any other.
she is more a full lyric, but she is lovely here. Lisette Oropesa, Erin Morley----these ladies are more lyric coloraturas.
A magical talent and a regular person to boot ! What in the world is NOT to like here ?
I don't think it can get any better. This is *magnifique!*
Как прекрасно исполнила. Доставила большое наслаждение.
I've just finished listening to Radnovsky (sp?), Callas, Sutherland, Netrebenko, and now Fleming sing this aria.. They're all beautiful and sublime, but in different ways, and i'm not enough of a musician to say how.
You didn't listen to Caballe???
Чарующий, необыкновенной красоты голос! Душа замирает!
Como se extraña a la enorme CALLAS!!!
This song is so beautiful! Omg she did absolutely amazing
что-то космическое в этой музыке и в этом голосе
there is something cosmic in this music and in this voice
I love that in these classical settings the audience is respectful to the artists and wait until the price in completely done before showing their gratitude. Nothing bothers me more than watching a legendary performance while having crazed fans scream their lungs out.
Especially when they do so before the performance is truly over - those moments before a conductor would drop the baton.
Effortless and extraordinary beautiful!
Never heard of this amazing woman... After this performance I will never forget her! Thank you to whomever told you yes. Angelic voice. Superb talent. Wow!
