Davide Verotta - Four Movements for Violin and Cello
Four Movements for Violin and Cello is a short composition divided in four contrasting sections. The first is the most angular. It starts aggressively, retreats, and then returns to a quite relentless forward motion that plays two quite sparse themes against each other. The second is more playful, in a simple A B A form. We hear a first theme recognizable, plucked by the violin, enter a second (B) section after a while, and then the original theme comes back as a variation. The third movement is somber: a strict call and response (the violin and cello play in alternation), only interrupted by the most dramatic climax of the whole piece. The fourth movement is fast, and brash and bold, with just a moment of reflection in the middle.

If I must Die - Refaat Alareer - Sarita Cannon, soprano, Jessie Nucho, flute
มุมมอง 208หลายเดือนก่อน
If I Must Die, Let It Be a Tale is a poem by Refaat Alareer. Alareer was born in Gaza City in 1979. A graduate from University College Landon, and University Putra Malaysia, with a dissertation on John Donne, he taught literature and creative writing at the Islamic University of Gaza. Just weeks after he wrote this poem, on December 6, 2023, Alareer was killed by an Israeli airstrike in norther...
Davide Verotta - Lament for Gaza City - Maki Ishii Sowash, violin, Vicky Ehrlich, cello
มุมมอง 2673 หลายเดือนก่อน
Coming from a place of deep sorrow, and a life-long commitment to non-violence and pacifism, Lament for Gaza City is a recitative for violin and cello. It is a speechless wail, at times overwhelmed by violence, only at the end showing a timid opening of hope. Its composition was motivated by the current (2023- 2024) paroxysm of brutal violence and destruction taking place in Israel and Palestin...
Davide Verotta - Materials - Vicky Ehrlich, cello
มุมมอง 1803 หลายเดือนก่อน
Materials is a short solo piece for cello divided in a free-flowing first section, a slow enigmatic interlude, and a final fast section based on three musical chords. It was conceived as a preliminary exploration of musical materials that might be used for a larger piece for cello, or string quartet and percussion. Recorded live at the Presidio Chapel, San Francisco, July 20, 2024. Vicky Ehrlic...
Davide Verotta - Adagio for Violin - Anne Presler, violin
มุมมอง 1813 หลายเดือนก่อน
Adagio for Violin is an early composition of mine. Written in 2007 I could consider it an Opus 1, but it was revised extensively in 2024, when I pruned it to half the original length without changing any of the original notes. It is a rather somber piece, but at the same time strangely tender. Played by Anne Presler. Score is available at imslp.org/wiki/Category:Verotta,_Davide
Davide Verotta - Variazioni per Violino - Monika Gruber, violin
มุมมอง 1823 หลายเดือนก่อน
Variazioni per Violino is an early work from 2007, composed when I was studying at UC Davis, pruned and cleaned and tightened up in January 2024. The work is now in four short movements (moderatamente, pensieroso, scherzando, all’improvvisata), with the mood correspondingly ranging from the moderately serious, to the thoughtful, then playful and finally a little bit boastful. A fun piece, with ...
Davide Verotta - Flora - Amy Foote, soprano, Friction Quartet
มุมมอง 59911 หลายเดือนก่อน
A soft-spoken warning about global warming and the perils associated with the Anthropocene, Flora is inspired by two ancient texts about the goddess of spring. The first, by Ovid (Fasti, Book 5; written 8 C.E.), describes the origin and powers of Flora, and the second, a poem by Virgil (Hymn to Spring, Georgiche, Book 2; published 30 B.C.E.) celebrates the season of rebirth. In the narrative of...
Davide Verotta - Energy - Chamber Orchestra Version
มุมมอง 125ปีที่แล้ว
Energy is a relatively short orchestral piece that is divided in three main sections. The first presents three musical ideas that overlap and recur in a rather meandering way. Think about it as a coil that winds up, to lead to the second section. The second section gives the name to the piece: it never lets up, and even when the tempo slows down, percussion keeps the tension going until the sec...

Davide Verotta - Five Movements for Five Players
มุมมอง 553ปีที่แล้ว
Five Movements for Five players is a moody piece that goes through different emotional landscapes. After a short introduction the first movement explodes forward, establishes what will become a recurring musical theme in the piece, and develops into rather complex and rhythmically varied lines. The second, third (played with a short pause after the second), and fourth movements, in slow, fast, ...
Davide Verotta - Tsure - Haruka Fujii Trio
มุมมอง 462ปีที่แล้ว
Tsure is freely inspired by the classic Noh Theater play Yamamba (Mountain Crone). Tsure, a dancer from Kyoto, is traveling in a pilgrimage to Zenkō-ji temple in the provinces. One day, during the journey, the sun suddenly sets before sundown, and a woman appears. She reveals herself as a mountain crone and asks the dancer to perform for her. When the frightened dancer tries to do so, she angri...
Davide Verotta - Summoning in Vain - Martha Rodriguez-Salazar, Sharon Wayne
มุมมอง 111ปีที่แล้ว
Summoning in Vain is a piece for alto flute and guitar that depicts a feeling of unfulfilled longing. A longing for a moment in the past, or a place, a person. Summoned in our mind but, unavoidably, gone unanswered. The piece is divided in three movements. Recorded live in San Francisco, May 6, 2023. Martha Rodriguez-Salazar, alto flute, Sharon Wayne, guitar. Video/Recording by Zach Miley. Scor...
Davide Verotta - String Quartet No.10 - The Cecilia Ensemble - String Quartet
มุมมอง 455ปีที่แล้ว
Written in December 2022, and following up on String Quartet No.9 (The Little One), String Quartet No.10 (Hope) is a mid-sized string quartet that alternates between two main musical themes. The first comes in as a jolt, at the beginning of the piece. The second, much more hesitant and restrained, is heard immediately after. It develops into a short interlude that tapers off and leads to a retu...
Davide Verotta - Deep Blue, Vermillion and Ivy Gold
มุมมอง 133ปีที่แล้ว
Deep Blue, Vermillion and Ivy Gold is a set of two pieces for violin and piano. Originally inspired by colors, it later started to take shape as a sort of vague story, from which it takes its subtitle: “Later, after the vision, it danced, the slightly mad Faun”. First movement is the vision, second movement the dance. Recorded live in San Francisco, May 6, 2023. Monika Gruber, violin, Davide Ve...
Davide Verotta - Tsure Goes to the Beach - Haruka Fujii, Marimba
มุมมอง 182ปีที่แล้ว
Tsure Goes to the Beach is a set of two pieces for marimba that originated as a sort of lighthearted companion to another composition of mine, Tsure. Where Tsure is a rather complex piece inspired by an ancient morality tale, Tsure Goes to the Beach is just about a young woman excitedly anticipating a visit to the beach, and then when she gets there, she stands on top of a sand dune and marvels...

Thank you so much for sharing your material. It is light and airy with much force that helps to move it along. I've been studying composers' works (keyboard) for over 30 years and during that time I have collected over 26,000 pdf compositions along with nearly 500 solid books of jazz and classicals. Glad I am a deep Java programmer to keep them all a keystroke away. I share you concern for the passing of time and the realities that come to mind when I see and feel the abyss speeding towards me from behind the range of mountains. Cannot get it all finished.
I love this honestly. I've a violin but I don't know how to use it. Can you please mentor me on it please??
It's wonderful to hear Davide and Monika in performance. Beautiful work!
The recording sounds so far away from the instruments.
eh ... one is in the hands of sound engineers ...
Bravo Davide.
This is wonderful, Davide! Sharing with a flautist-editor friend, Jaye Marsh (Flute in the Wild).
Good job!
