    The thing i struggle with is anticipation on busy roundabouts, some people leave indicators on and go all the way around, or dont indicate and come all the way around.

      Don't just go by someone’s indicators, it does not always tell you what the other driver is going to do, but rather also look at the position of their car and front wheels...

    Thank you Richard. This video describes exactly what I have to face everyday. I have just moved to the UK from Hong Kong. And there are many challenges on the road in the UK compared with in HK. Many closed junctions, many mini roundabouts, many busy junctions without traffic lights so I have to make my decisions, many narrow two-way roads with parked cars on both sides. Everyday I drive like playing electronic video games. Thanks for your videos!

    Hi Richard, I’m from Singapore. I passed my driving test for manual car on my first attempt and your videos really helped a lot! I’m thankful I chanced upon your channel and am still watching your videos even though I passed.
    How it works in Singapore is that different driving faults (e.g. fail to signal in good time would be 2 demerit points) have different demerit points and serious mistakes here are known as immediate failure mistakes. To pass the test, testee should not accumulate more than 20 points AND not have any serious fault.

    Hey Richard, a viewer from Australia here.
    I just wanted to say thank you for all your videos on driving manual, from covering every possible topics and aspects of it. Not to mention also making it engaging as possible through a video, which is a bonus!
    I have been driving automatic for over 5 years, and wanted to purchase my next car in manual as I turned full license. Your videos were such great help to me, especially not having access to a manual car and only having a couple of professional lessons to drive in a manual.
    Eventually I was able to bring my new manual car home recently, there was some tough moments, but using what I learned from all your videos helped me with those all certain situations I can across, from hills to traffic.
    Also I would always recite one of your sayings “focus on what you need to do, and don’t worry about others”, which really helped me throughout the drive.

    02:50-03:04 - biggest piece of advice I can advocate! When I was a begginer I was so afraid of being a nancy-williy and a nuisance to others in traffic, that I would be continously stressed of being honked by cars behind me. Sage advice for beginners. Do your thing, trust your gut and be aware. Let others honk if they're too much "in a hurry" and ignore those honks. Remember, rule no.1 for driving, be it on a highway or city roads, is to get safely from point A to B.

    You are so right about stressing out about the people behind so much that I am less prepared for hazards in front - my first driving instructor always got me to check my mirrors even before ever slowing down and in general always be checking/aware if there is someone behind you but I find that needlessly pulls my attention away and unless I'm pulling out or in slightly around parked cars I can't see why that's necessary - if I need to stop abruptly then it's an emergency, I'm not going to hit a person just because someone's riding my tail way too close.

    • @54356776
      @54356776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to check your mirrors before changing anything and it's a necessity to know what is going on around you (situational awareness). It's part of the test and missing a mirror check could get you a minor fault or worse. It should become second nature once you get used to it and it's an essential part of driving. A quick glance is all that is needed and it shouldn't distract you from what is going on ahead of you.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Em, I totally agree with you, checking your mirrors before braking can only delay braking meaning you will have to brake harder. On test I've only had pupils get marked down for not checking their mirrors before slowing down if they have had to brake harshly, which I've always found to be strange as if they checked their mirrors first, they would have to brake even harder.

    The road where I live is narrow with cars on both sides like in your example - it also has a couple of blind corners, ohh and it's also on a steep hill! I passed back in November but feel like I'm still learning how to anticipate other drivers and plan ahead for spaces to wait/pass safely. Watching your videos are definitely helping me to feel more confident!

    Really helpful video as usual, I can relate to what you said about not anticipating and planning because I'm worried about the drivers behind, this was me always rushing to get out of the way. I'm definitely working on this tho now my confidence is increasing 😊
    I've also never heard of the term 'leaving the door open' makes sense tho and helpful, thanks for this 😊

      i rarely drive a night only if a have too, can do it no issue but what bugs me bright lights behind so when safe i give signal to left they pass. normally early morning rush, 5am roads quite and fast locals caught up some blew past but few just followed closer than i like so next town signal left they went around, driving country lanes what driven before but rarely and never at night so i was slower than normal at times, when safe i allow them to pass they happy and im happy and few give thank you wave or flash hazards as they pass but if not safe for them to pass it tough luck they have to go at the speed i feel safe, even tho im no way a slow driver quick at times always catching up people but on roads you do not know or road with loads hazards i drive with extra caution even if it is slower than the driver behind likes and if they holding back i sure help to get them past when safe, reckless ones they pass first chance they get safe or not so just be ready to adjust speed

    I struggled for ages, doing lessons on and off and the problem was always anticipation. I found the solution was a better instructor. My first two were very old school and made me feel stupid for making mistakes, so I'd always hesitate in fear of making mistakes. A new approach and I'm a thousand times better.

    I live in Devon and I frequently enjoy road trips in both Devon and Cornwall. One technique I find very helpful with blind bends is having the lights on (dipped), even in daytime. Judging by the oncoming vehicle's sudden maneuver in response to the light, I can't tell you how many times I've avoided accidents thanks to that (in combination with slowing down, too).

    I always drive my car with safety in mind, it's a shame that this safe way of driving is not innate in everyone, then it would not need to learned. All it takes is common sense and respect for all other road users and stay clear of the idiots that want to play dangerous games on the roads.

    I slow down when needed, but people drive recklessly where I live, and I’m more afraid of them hitting me from behind/sides compared to me hitting them. What can be done regarding that? Also sometimes people enter highways with wider turns so I feel anxious about that too.

    We should all anticipate to give way even when it's our right of way. You do see people barrelling down narrow roads with cars parked on your side and don't stop because it's "ThEiR rIgHt Of WaY" even though you already committed long before them.

    One thing you didn’t touch on about anticipation is that you should also factor in your survivability and damage, for example, when I’m driving a big pickup truck I’d be less nervous when I see someone with a sedan weaving in and out of traffic, and wouldn’t really bother to brake so sharply when that car suddenly cuts me off, on the other hand if I’m driving a sedan and someone with a pickup doing the same thing, I would definitely react much more differently.

    Thanks for this Richard! Very helpful!
    I struggle with anticipation mainly at blind junctions. Once, I came up to a tight 4 way junction, and waited at the give way sign. It was a blind junction on my left and right, so I waited for 4 seconds and was under the impression nobody was coming, so I pulled out to turn right. At the very last second, an Audi who had priority came out of nowhere and we very nearly collided, but I stopped at the last second!
    It's strange, because I had just been on the motorway (the M1) for the first time since I was a learner in 2018 and was fine, but I almost had an accident so close to my house. I laughed it off at the time but thinking about it later, it could've been rough.
    Could you perhaps do a video on this topic? Also a video on what to do if you're in a crash would be helpful, as new drivers would probably lose their mind if they were in a crash.
