I don't even think the lessons I had when I first learned to drive were as good as these. So thanks! I'm hoping there's some motorway and dual carriageway ones as well as tricky roundabouts.
Stopping and starting using the clutch isn't riding the clutch. Riding the clutch is when you keep the car still using the clutch, here is a video: th-cam.com/video/81SOTuCsxV0/w-d-xo.html
just passed my driving exam and got my license, just by watching this channels vids, and actual driving of atleast y hours.. braking and turning had always been my problem but not now.. uphill too os not a problem anymore.. the key is "dont panic" but "be mindful of your sorrounding" and be mindful of your "spatial awareness"
There’s been something about watching these videos that I couldn’t describe or figure out but it’s part of why I keep watching. I’ve realised that’s it’s the camera position making you feel like a passenger, epic placement.
WHAT? you don't even need to use the break!!!! I am surprised that my instructor never mentioned that to me while she knows how much I struggle. I have been using both the clutch and the brake to control my speed in traffic and driving me nuts. Thanks for this
Yep. Pressing the clutch will decouple the transmission and therefore you will slow down. Can be done on petrol engines, but those need a bit of gas pedal too in order to do that. ^_^
I'm learning to drive in a manual, and I've been told to just use the clutch and the brake, when slow. It works an absolute wonder, and super easy to do as well. It's the same for reversing as well, as it's fast enough, at it's maximum speed and lowest when low (everything in 1st gear of course). So many people don't realise they can do this, and honestly so comfortable to do! Another cracking video 👏
Summary: To normally accelerate, push the clutch, give some gas, and lift the clutch to its bite point. To coast, give some gas, push the clutch, slowly lift it to its bite point, and push it down a bit so the car rolls without accelerating.
This is a much better way to learn then how I was taught. For new manual drivers there's a tendency to get overwhelmed easily. This lesson is nice and relaxed, with good explanation on the what's and why's. Only thing I would suggest is pointing out that sometimes you have to ride the clutch like that, but it does add wear, so it's best to avoid doing that say at a stop light when you're waiting for the light to turn green. Just do it when you really need to.
I remember when my dad taught me to drive a manual. He brought home a Mazda B2300 6 speed 4cyl and said "I don't have the patience to teach you. You have a week to figure it out. Next week you'll drive me around, and if you stall once I'm taking the truck back." I ended up driving that little truck for 200,000 miles over the next 10 years. I believe it's still on the road today.
Such informative video. Wish more people would see this. A lot of people think controlling the clutch at low speed (during parking/bad traffic) is still "riding the clutch". Thanks for the video!
How is this different than riding the clutch? I thought simply keeping the clutch partially pressed for long times is riding the clutch... But I will say, I tried this technique out on my manual transmission, and it was surprising how smooth it was. Normally in traffic, I wait for the car in front to get a car-length ahead, then take the clutch to the bipoint to get rolling about 5 mph then press the clutch fully to coast to a gradual stop..... I guess my way isn't the most efficient but that's how my dad taught me long ago 🤣
At first I am ready to give up in driving manual, but this channel gave me boost of confidence not give up and also make me look forward whenever I'll practice in driving, especially the clutch control. Thank you very much sir.
Pretty much got the hang of this straight without always needing to brake and pull the hand brake back up in slow moving traffic! Getting better by each day by gaining experience on the road. Great video as always and well explained to learners such as myself 👌

Eurekah and halleluja! Finally someone that mentions the clutch DOES NOT NEED TO BE RAISED ABOVE THE BITE POINT WHEN STARTING. Been arguing this for ten years as a driving instructor.
@Conquer Driving Quoting you from the video: "What you need to understand is that when you lift the clutch to the bite point the car will continue to accelerate, you don't need to keep lifting the clutch higher to accelerate. Holding it in the same place on the bite point and the car will get faster and faster." And this is what I've been struggling to make students and their parents understand so they can start to learn how to drive manual cars properly. They tend to have this misunderstanding that the clutch needs to be raised higher and higher, to the point where it can't go higher, and even lift the foot off the clutch before shifting to second gear which is just horrendous. My original comment was a compliment to you for pointing this out, and explaining it beautifully. Well done, very well done!
It's baffling. A year ago, I had trained on a manual (went to a driving school in Bengaluru, India) to obtain my license. I do not recall this issue occurring. Given the issues with traffic in Bengaluru and because I didn't want to add to stress while driving, I purchased an AMT vehicle (Automated Manual). I got good at driving it and becoming one with the car. Recently when I visited my in laws place, my brother in law asked me to check out his manual car. Believe it or not, I ran into the exact same issue and, I did not know how to rectify it. Instead I applied the brake slowly but that caused the car to stop with a jerk. This video was exceptionally useful. All I had to do was control the clutch !! Thank you very much Richard for these videos. Your work benefits people all over the world, not just UK. I recommend your content to everyone I know who struggles with a manual.
What a great demonstration during the first 2"30!❤ I almost forgot that the bite point itself also means acceleration, as a new learner. Really appreciate of it.🌹
Perfect example on how to keep your car slow and steady, particularly why it's a bad idea to keep your heels on the floor all the time. Liked and subscribed.
You make an interesting point about the heel position. I find myself losing hold over the clutch, I'll try what you suggested and keep the foot hanging until it's at the biting point. Great video!
As a manual driver my whole driving life (30+) years you have amazing tutorials! This video in particular is why I love my Jeep so much. They're geared in such a way you don't even need the gas pedal when starting in 1st. So slow driving or hill starting in traffic i just slowly lift up on the clutch with no gas pedal and away she goes. You also barely need any gas pedal if you're starting in 2nd gear either. Just a touch.
Hi, I would like to take this moment to really thank you for sharing all your videos. I have been learning how to drive a manual car and one of my friends was like an instructor to me but I have to admit I have learnt a lot from your videos and today I can drive on the road as a learner driver. Thank you so much!
Could you make a video on pulling out of junctions quickly ? Like accelerating fast into roundabouts and onto a busy road where there's not enough time to drive slowly onto the road
Yes please! I take too long and my instructor said that he would count to three. So he counted to three.... then four five six and i still didn't move out lol
very helpful. this is what my instructor is teaching me at the moment, so i don’t have to come to a complete stop and use handbrake every time, it makes it a lot easier in slow moving traffic. also the point about keeping your heel up when on the clutch was very helpful thanks ☺️
Stellar information, Richard! No one has ever explained this concept on how to go super slow/park/get into a garage etc. Also the heel concept near the bite point is amazing information also. THANK YOU!
Your videos are so helpful!! I have been driving a year but such a nervous driver, especially in traffic and will avoid busy times because of it, however my husband has said he will take my car away if i don't start using it more, and i watch these videos, and go and practice a little, and my confidence is coming on!! I still can't park for toffee, but hills don't terrify me as much now, no issues with roundabouts any more and even choose the bypass sometimes to get home, slowly i am starting to do more and its because you explain things so clearly. Now to tackle that motorway near me at some point then i can go shopping without the husband :-)
absolutely love your channel, hands down best explanations! your videos always give me a massive confidence boost before lessons because I actually feel I understand it properly
I was struggling learning Manuel and kept stalling I watched one of his videos and used his tips Than boom It clicked to me Honestly one of the best instructors only reason why im commenting because his advice really worked
1:23 I was that person even around 30h of driving school I really had trouble to taking left turns in really narrow roads I remember when I staid at 2nd which my instructor stopped me to tell me to put my 1st gear But even with that I was still driving to quickly So I pressed the brake pedal but I was going to slowly to the point of making the car shivering But one time I was coming accross one of your video when you can press the clutch when you must going really slowly I really appreciate your videos because it gives really useful tips
I'm on 3 lessons, my best advice is to go somewhere quiet with a suitable driver and just practise getting to the biting point and holding it. Mastering clutch control early helps so much. Steering will come to you, just try keep your left leg in the centre of the road as a reference.
@@BLINKBOXHD I'm on my third lesson as well 😁 I've realised that I always either hold the clutch down all the time or I hold the accelerator down without even realising. Also which steering method do you use? (My instructor keeps telling me to use the push and pull method but I hate it)
@@Mahmood.23 push pull is good for tight corners and bends cos otherwise your arms will lock up. But for roundabouts I just turn the wheel and hold it (make sure not to lock arm). There is no correct way to steer, just make sure your comfortable and have control. My hands are roughly 9:30/2:30 on the wheel.
U r such a good instructor. I am in another country that drives on the left like the U.k. Your videos are so helpful. Thanx for the wonderful work. U deserve a bells.
I had my second ever lesson yesterday, and I'm struggling a little with steering correctly and quickly for corners and keeping the car straight in the roads. And I had to deal with people driving very closely to the back of me, and using clutch in traffic made me anxious because I was worried about the people who were extremely close to the back of me.
If you're on your second lesson, go easy on yourself, expect to do plenty of things wrong. Accept you will annoy others, that's what happens when you learn yo drive, don't let it bother you. Or at least, try your best not to let it bother you.
Exactly what I needed I’m on holiday and my house here has a very tight driveway and narrow gate to exit I always use biting point and brake to keep it slow and find myself getting faster when I let off the brake or a few times stalling, was scared to use gas as the fear of hitting the gate or walls in tight driveway but now I understand controlling the clutch and adding a tiny bit of gas will help me smoothly and slowly exit the driveway, this is exactly what I needed you explain everything so perfectly and clearly! Love your videos keep up the great work you’re helping thousands of people learn how to drive safely and correctly

You're the most perfect instructor ever.
What a great demonstration during the first 2"30!❤ I almost forgot that the bite point itself also means acceleration, as a new learner. Really appreciate of it.🌹
Just learning to drive & I must say these videos have done a world of good to my learning process. Much thanks!
Thank you ☺
Perfect example on how to keep your car slow and steady, particularly why it's a bad idea to keep your heels on the floor all the time. Liked and subscribed.
You make an interesting point about the heel position. I find myself losing hold over the clutch, I'll try what you suggested and keep the foot hanging until it's at the biting point. Great video!
this guy is a legend! i have difficulty learning to drive a manual transmission car because of stalling , this video will help me a lot.
You are one heck of an instructor. Many of your videos had taught me on how to be a better driver with a manual transmission. Much appreciated!
Thank you ☺
As a manual driver my whole driving life (30+) years you have amazing tutorials!
Thank you man! You've been a great help to me! I dont have a car yet but I'm borrowing to my friends car to enhance my basics in driving!
Yes please
Yes please! I take too long and my instructor said that he would count to three. So he counted to three.... then four five six and i still didn't move out lol
Do you set the gas? That helps build speed
Try giving it more gas
Cheers for the feedback, yea I do set gas, but I'm still not fully consistent at pulling away quick, will probs get sorted with practice tho
The only issue im having with these videos is they are in miles not kilometers. Still extremely useful videos thank you so much 🙏
very helpful. this is what my instructor is teaching me at the moment, so i don’t have to come to a complete stop and use handbrake every time, it makes it a lot easier in slow moving traffic. also the point about keeping your heel up when on the clutch was very helpful thanks ☺️
Stellar information, Richard! No one has ever explained this concept on how to go super slow/park/get into a garage etc.
Also the heel concept near the bite point is amazing information also. THANK YOU!
I will find you someday and officially pay you for all you have taught me... thank you.
Haha, thank you.
Keep it up, regular practise is what's needed. Also, don't rush anything.
absolutely love your channel, hands down best explanations! your videos always give me a massive confidence boost before lessons because I actually feel I understand it properly
I was struggling learning Manuel and kept stalling I watched one of his videos and used his tips Than boom It clicked to me Honestly one of the best instructors only reason why im
commenting because his advice really worked
Dang! This guys a rare find in all the trash around.
1:23 I was that person even around 30h of driving school
I really had trouble to taking left turns in really narrow roads
I remember when I staid at 2nd which my instructor stopped me to tell me to put my 1st gear
But even with that I was still driving to quickly
So I pressed the brake pedal but I was going to slowly to the point of making the car shivering
But one time I was coming accross one of your video when you can press the clutch when you must going really slowly
I really appreciate your videos because it gives really useful tips
This is perfect timing for me. I'm taking lessons and my biggest problems are clutch control and steering
@@BLINKBOXHD okay thanks 👍
I hope it helps.
Am still learning how to drive a manual car and one of my biggest fears is riding slowly uphill.
This video has given me great insight. Thanks man
Uphill you can either use handbrake, or, if driving a diesel, it's got so much torque that you can pretty much just accelerate.
Can you make a video on giving way/ tight situations and using bite point on hills? These videos are extremely helpful
I need to do a video on tight junctions. This may help you with hills th-cam.com/video/O3cTlwMytfU/w-d-xo.html
He addresses the basic point a driver struggles with. Lovely!!!
Much love bro, here watching from Uganda east Africa 🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬
Nobody ever taught me this kind of stuff when I got my first stick. Just picked it up over the years, great videos, would have been helpful back then.
Great video! As a beginner driver I find this super helpful, thank you (:
☺️
So strange to see that as a European that as always driven manual, but you are making it very clear, so thanks for everyone!
Exactly what I wanted to know
☺️
Man as someone who knows how to drive manual, and has known for a very long time. It's great learning new techniques or remembering old ones
This is exactly what I needed now🙌🏼💙
😊
I needed something like this earlier today and I am glad this was recommended to me by TH-cam.
Champion! Spent the weekend having my first lessons in a decade and this is exactly what I need extra help with! Thank you. :)
You're welcome ☺
Ok, thank you so much. There's so much traffic and speed bumps here, and I never knew if this was good for the car or not.
Ur a bad man!.....u definitely know ur stuff👍🔥🔥🔥
U r such a good instructor. I am in another country that drives on the left like the U.k. Your videos are so helpful. Thanx for the wonderful work. U deserve a bells.
Love the shoes and socks! Would love to see a pedal cam in those killer socks sometime!
😂
These videos are literally teaching me how to drive manual I love them
Thank you so much, you are an amazing instructor, I wish I had you as mine!
☺️
Your videos are fantastic. I passed my driving exams all the way in Ghana. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you. Congratulations!
I was the guy who use to put the heel on the ground while shifting gears and in the traffic.
This video was very helpful ❤️
Omg I always have the foot slipping problem. Thanks!
Not sure if my comment will reach you. But I wanted to let you know that I learned to drive a manual by watching your videos keenly!
That's great to hear, I'm happy the videos helped!
I have driven a manual in traffic and I don’t really mind driving a manual in traffic it makes my left leg more stronger
Good exercise, that's the spirit!
Love your videos keep up the great work you’re helping thousands of people learn how to drive safely and correctly
can't you do this with just the clutch ? why do you need the gas ? i don't need to use any gas in traffic.
This would work if the road was flat, if it was uphill you would need gas
If your car has ECU, it gives gas automatically to avoid stalling. In a car that don't give you gas at biting point, you'd need to give gas.
Thank you for your videos sir! I'm new to driving a manual and your videos have helped a lot with my practice and confidence!!
Can you drive with 1 hand on the wheel on the driving test
Probably not buddy...
Bryan Guegan I find it a little more comfortable than with 2 hands
@@hoodnationproductions Maybe but still... If I do that I will probably get a car accident because I'm still nervous and young at driving...
Bryan Guegan I understand good luck if your taking your theory or driving test
@@hoodnationproductions I already have my driving licsence since 6 months and I still suck while driving my manual car and I stall too much...
Your videos got me in shape to rent a car in Ireland. I was never taught to use manual
