  • Many people get stressed, nervous and frustrated when they are behind the wheel. In this video I verbalise my thoughts whilst driving in some unfamiliar areas with busy roundabouts and parked cars so that you can hear how I think when I'm driving. I also park in a busy car park with cars and pedestrians close by.

I passed my test first time with only 2 minors. Before my test I made many mistakes however when it came to it, I just relaxed and gave it my best. I’m super self-critical, and on my first test I thought I’d made loads of errors. My driving instructor made sure to tell me that no matter how many mistakes I think I make, continue driving as though you haven’t made any. Don’t give up. Turns out in my test I’d only made one minor error.

    • @Mxerked

    • @sarahg2721
      @sarahg2721 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@Mxerked take each moment as it comes in the test! If you’re a worrier and an over thinker like me, try to give yourself permission to *not* do that for the duration of the test (virtually impossible, I know), but even if you think you’ve made a major fault - act like you didn’t. Tell yourself you still have a clean slate. I thought I’d made a serious fault and it turns out it wasn’t even a minor one. If I’d got in my head about it while finishing the test, it would have negatively impacted my driving and I’d have been more likely to make more errors. And then I really would have failed. Try not to be your own examiner during the test - that’s their job. Your job is to drive as safely as possible, and to do the best you can. Beyond that, a lot of it comes down to luck! If you never give up, you can never fail. Good luck!

At the beginning of my driving and in the driving school I was quite often nervous and was like "how can someone enjoy driving". A while after I got my license, when I got used to driving, stopped being afraid and nervous behind the wheel and got my own car, I started to really enjoy driving. For like last 3 years I enjoy it so much,I often just grab the keys and go for a random drive just because I feel like it and almost always come back home more relaxed, happier and satisfied. I do it to even relax after hard times or while feeling down. Despite some.... not so good drivers that drive dangerously, when i encounter one, I usually am not nervous for longer than couple of seconds,If necessary I just press the horn, relax and move on. I also always say to myself that when you are about to drive, take your ego, anger, tension and frustration and throw it in the bin, because if you take it with you behind the wheel, you will be only doing mistakes, you will only be more frustrated, angry, may put others in danger and possibly have an accident. If you put it in the bin, stay calm, dont look for trouble, you will start to enjoy driving. (edit) one thing that helped me is a change of mindset, you described it in lots of your videos, like dont be tense, dont desperately try to catch up with others, drive at your own pace, take your time for everything and etc.. Thanks for the vid!

I passed my test in 2017 and have hardly driven since. The reason is that I found I was a very nervous driver. It was probably down to a lack of experience, and confidence. I also had one or two minor incidents which didn't help and put me off driving. It's frustrating because I want to be able to drive and I know there is a good driver within me, otherwise, I wouldn't have passed my test. I want to get back on the road and build my confidence up which is partly why I'm watching these videos. I hope I can get back behind the wheel soon but will probably need some refresher lessons now.

THANK YOU!! At 7 minutes in. I have done this for years and you do the same. Namely, when in traffic and there are cars waiting to leave a junction from the left, let one in, go forward then the next driver lets one in. I rarely see this happen these days. It does ease stress and stops drivers 'bullying' their way in because no one will let them in. It was commonplace years ago, but not these days.

My three rules for staying calm, based upon my 45 years behind the wheel:
    1. Maintain a safe distance.
    2. Assume that other road users are simply having a bad day if they do something stupid.
    3. Be extra courteous in allowing drivers to pull out when appropriate, sometimes even if you have right of way - a surprised 'thank you' wave and smile are worth much.
Although a 'white van man' I am also an advanced driver and courtesy from such a vehicle often results in surprised or even shocked, but happy faces!

Hey! Just wanted to comment that i discovered your channel about a week ago and must've watched upwards of 30 videos by now. I'm around 16 hours into my lessons, my control of the car is pretty decent, though I deal with extreme anxiety in day to day life which carries over into driving, so my main drawbacks are observing, confidence, judging etc. Videos like this help a ton for people like me, it just helps show that driving isn't always some scary thing that'll leave you mentally exhausted at the end of it, and that if you can manage to be chilled out about it, it makes all those things i struggle with a lot easier to manage while driving. Thanks so much!

Your video on "test nerves" and "5 top tips for passing" were very helpful to make me relaxed and confident during my test. Also, there was a video on "how to use mirrors when reversing" that actually helped from failing ha - first test I missed up my reverse to the bay manoeuver and couldn't correct hence the fail, but this time I had the knowledge which I applied and it was just so EASY!!! I would recommended everyone to watch them if you have a test coming up and good luck 🥰

Wow, i thought this is going to be a boring vid but to my surprise it was worth the watch. Thanks for sharing. Im a new driver and thru this vid. I realize, there will always be rude drivers whichever part of the world you are or at least drivers who forgot to signal their intent. And its not worth immitating their driving style.
Your driving actually inspired me to become more a courteous driver while staying calm. Cheers!

I passed my test TODAY! (literally 2 hours ago!) It was in a different town to the one that I'd been practising in for the last few months with my instructor, so needed some courage the night before the test (I'd done a few laps around the town over the last few weeks as it became clear I wasn't going to find a cancellation in time in my own town), your video couldn't have come at a better time!
I've been watching your videos for the last few days, and the fact that you uploaded this last night was such a huge help; attitude and nerves was my biggest concern gooing into it, but seeing you stay calm helped me to get into the mindset - ended up having a nice conversation with my examiner the whole journey, just had to break the ice with a joke or two first!
Thank you for your brilliant videos, and thank you for putting them onto a free streaming service, you are helping hundreds of thousands of learner drivers get ready for the road.
I'll continue to watch your videos as you never stop learning things as a driver!

As a non-british all these roundabouts make me kind of worried 😆
We have a lot less roundabouts and more simple ones, but some of them have STOP signs all around, and some of them have no signage, meaning the one entering has the priority

Really helpful video. I recently passed just before Christmas but I’m having some issues with confidence when driving in places I don’t know, I seem to find myself driving in the dark more often than not with the time of year which isn’t helping! It always feels a lot more enjoyable when I’m relaxed. I have found it quite helpful to have a quick scan of the route on Google maps to scout out any big roundabouts and work out what lane I need to be in, probably a bit OTT but I feel more relaxed when I know what to expect! Keep up the great content. 🙌🏻

Dude what even is this timing!? I swear I sent you a telepathic spark or something. I have a resit tomorrow and I've failed four times now because of nerve-induced serious faults and have watched every single one of your playlists over the last few months (and I mean every single one), hoping for something which will help. A lot of it did, but imagine my delight at seeing this appear. If I pass, it'll be partly thanks to you Richard. And maybe even thanks to this video specifically. PS - that van driver at 10:45 is the reason mandatory resits should be a thing every 10 years.

@@ConquerDriving I passed but with 13 faults. Most of them to do with junction speed. My father sat in and disagreed with the examiner on this, so it could be that my Auto would over-rev near junctions, giving the impression of speed? Not sure, but either way can't wait to continue learning and watching your videos. THANK YOU!!! I will be recommending you to everyone.

Hi mate, love your videos, I work around Colchester so it’s fun to see the same roads… the arrows pointing back in where the lane didn’t merge, they are deflections arrows indicating a double white line system, line closest unbroken and telling you which side to pass, a bit misleading I agree because they aren’t positioned very well, probably because of the chevron area lead in didn’t allow space so they moved the arrow to the left, normally they’d be positioned further to the right, traffic signs manual chapter 3
