Did the lock you purchased allow you to remove the key in either the locked or unlocked position? We bought some that you couldn't take the key out unless it was in the locked position, which meant you couldn't just unlock a door without it either being swinging open, or you had to close and lock it each time, they just sucked. they too were the barrel style key

Oh boy, that is the most common lock folks usually replace for added security.

+@electricamish yes, you are able to remove the key in either position. The ones you go do sound like a pain in the rump!
