  • Here's an EASY DIY upgrade to replace your RV compartment locks to quality cam locks that are more secure. Why? Many RV compartments use the same CH751 keys. It's true. This is a great and VERY important video and I am so glad it exists to spread the word that people with RVs need to change out their CH751 locks, however the type of locks that you are using to replace them are known to the lock picking community to be the easiest to open. I am not joking, with no experience anyone can open up a tubular lock as long as they have the right tool. So please read this comment and take it seriously. Please respond to me and I will show you just how bad this type of lock can be and how it is almost as bad a a CH751 lock.

    Thanks - great video! I was shocked when I found out that my new RV had the CH751 keys, so the first thing I did when I got the RV home was to remove all the locks and take them down to my local locksmith and have them rekeyed. Either way, it is a quick and easy mod which every RVer should consider before filling the storage compartments with all your expensive goodies! BTW - the door lock on many Rvs is also a standard key. My salesman put his 5th wheel key in the door of my new class A and unlocked the door! This is a subject which is seldom mentioned. Buyer beware!!

    thanks Tito for the discount code and the tips. these are nice locks and the tubular cam locks are so easy to use. i had to cut a couple of the old locks off with a cut off tool as they did not want to come off and i didnt want to take a chance of damaging the fiberglass. i put the new locks on with a 7/8 socket using only my hand and not a ratchet and tried to balance getting the new locks tight so they would not move and not to over compress the fiberglass door which is not hard to do.

    The first thing I did when I recently bought my new trailer was to replace the China bomb tires with made in the USA Goodyear Endurance tires. The second thing I did was to replace my CH 751 keyed locks with the same locks as Tito has. Very easy install. I did have to bend the latches slightly so they would lock. There are inserts supplied so you can use your old latches, but the latches have curved corners and the inserts are squared, so you would need to grind them down to make them work. And for the outside shower door, the lock barrel was too large, so I had to do a little filing so it would pass through, but it's just a cheap plastic door. But all in all, a very easy install and now I can throw away my CH 751 keys.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too. Some of my latches took a little bit of tweaking as well on a couple new compartments I put locks on. All good though.

    Hey, awesome tip, I'm totally doing this to all of my hatches. One of the big problems with the keys also is that sometimes it's hard to know what direction to put them in the lock. We have renters and they've broken about 2 keys thus far so I think this is the right move!

    • @RVwithTito

    • @stevereedatx
      @stevereedatx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RVwithTito Right, I think you'd have to really be trying to break one of these keys if that's even possible using your bare hands. The other keys, however, snap all too easily and are probably not the best types of keys for latches that often don't fit exactly right and can be a struggle. Thanks again for the great content, you did a good job showing how to do this upgrade and I appreciate the links.

    I never new this until someone commented that all CH751 locks are all keyed the same. My pickups locking fuel door uses one of these keys. To my surprise my fuel door key opened every compartment door that I tried at last years RV show (about 8 of them). Thank goodness my trailer came with the "slam latch" style which is much more secure because there are a total of 50 different key codes available.

      I was going to post this question to Tito but since you're here :)
      How common is the barrel key that you provide? The RV I am buying comes from a rental fleet so I am sure there's a million keys for every lock on it. I'll be a solo female full timer so getting as many locks replaced with a *more unique* key will be a priority.

      @@bridgetmurray1163 We normally don't check comments on videos so I apologize for taking 3 years to respond to your question. LOL. There is a total of 10,000 possible key combinations for our Tubular locks. What we do that no other seller does is we keep track of every single key code we produce. This means that we do not assign the same code to two customers in the same geographical area. For example if code X1965 was assigned to John Doe in Tampa the next time we have reuse code X1965 we will assign it to a customer in the west coast.

    I also ordered locks to replace the non keyed twist locks that were on compartments that had a 731 key lock and the twist lock on the other end. If you only replace the one side a thief can open the twist lock and use a pry bar or large screwdriver into the opening and bust the door open.

    Hi! I'm a Gramma who wants to be an RVer. Recently, someone breached all our outside compartments becuz one side of the compartment only has a toggle no lock & key. The intruders had a small slim entry, they just popped the locked side and bent the little piece of metal to successfully breached all the compartments, except the smaller ones that only had the lock. I am not very DIY but I am learning! I thought change all to locking type and use the one key type you used for your demo, maybe longer, stronger latch? Thank you for your instructional videos.

    Being a newbie RVer, who has the CH751 keyed compartments, this is certainly an upgrade that we had already planned on making. Also from what I read last year, (not exactly sure were I read it now though, or if it is even true), but I read that the RVs that have the old CH751 locks on the compartments, also some may share the same entry door keys as well. The doors don't use the same CH751 keys as the compartments do, but they were brought out with only a limited number of different door keys, (like 5 or 10 different keys only), so the odds that someone's key matches your door is possible. So we plan to change our door lock as well. In this day and time you can't be too safe. I've often wondered why the Generator compartment doesn't have a lock on them too for when it's not being used. It seems to me that with the price of those things they'd put a lock on that compartment to keep them from sprouting legs and getting stolen when your RV is sitting at an isolated campsite, or you're out boon docking somewhere, and have left the area to go out site seeing. LOL just my thought.

    • @RVwithTito
      @RVwithTito  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +crackerjack4u I did put a lock on the generator compartment too. I suppose someone could just fire it up with the manual start too...perhaps a joke you could play on your buddy at the campsite. Start it up, run away, and never tell him :)

Quick question; I've had a bit of a struggle locating stainless locks designed to last longer in a marine (fresh water) setting. Are those you installed in the video stainless? Super informative. Thanks! I'm going to order these. Probably a dumb question but to find out the size of your lock, do you just need to take it out and measure it? I was hoping there's another way because my trailer is parked outside the city in a storage facility and I'd like to get these ordered right away.
    Is there a way to find detailed specs on your trailer online?
    Again....thanks for a great video!

    I changed my rv locks from the crappy C-751 to another one ,but when i changed them the cylinder of the new lock moves left to right when I lock and unlock them any pointers on how to fix this ,it would be so appreciated

      It's adjustable. There's a little ring thing that goes on the back under the screw I think (like a washer). Flip it over or rotate it to change the direction of the lock. That should fix it.

    Did you end up changing your thumb latches as well? That would make them more secure and be a bit more of a deterrent. I'll be doing the barrel lock upgrade when we start our run-up to spring camping. The previous owner of our Trailmanor changed the door locks to a residential style lockset so that adds some peace of mind.

    Hi Tito thanks for the video. We have locks with black handles incorporated. Anyone happen to know where we could get those? Aso is there a video that explains installation. I need to add a second one to each door on my fifth wheel we just purchased. I looked in Amazon of course but curious to see if the Rv community has other suppliers to compare. Thank you for your help.

    Brian I have the exact rv that you have. 2007 32 four-winds 31f. I have made several up dates that you have suggested.My question is on the locks that you replaced on the outside compartments.you measured 1-1/2 cams. Mine came to 1-3/8.I came up with 11. DO you think I error ed and would 1/1/2 work for me . Great channel.
