    I got this laptop 2 weeks ago, love it. Played all of Alan Wake 2 on it. Ran like a champ. Did have a screen flickering issue pop up yesterday where the screen would blink in certain apps. Hey there! Thanks for all the reviews and updates with this issue! I believe the 7i problem lied with some bios/driver issue; the stuttering seems like the computer switching randomly between the iGPU and the dGPU.
    Now that you have thoroughly tested both , how do you see the screen size of the 14' to use without an additional monitor? I wanted to buy a P1 G6 as a mobile workstation, but saw that the thinkpads have a really serious issue with overheating :(, spent a whole night re-researching my options and ended up deciding between the slim5 14 (the 16' looks awfull honestly, although technically makes more sense lol), and the 7i; and I would 100% would go with the slim 5, but Im afraid that the screen might be too small for photoshop (i mainly do image editing).
    Also, how did you see the 7i performance while working on it? I barely game, so maybe your issue wouldnt affect me so much, since I can just manually switch to balanced/performance before gaming once or twice a month :v.

    • @Payne.
      @Payne.  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for the kind words. I personally don't use the 14" to edit video, I really rely on a monitor for that. I have used a P1, P16 and P17 and the P17 overheated initially. After a firmware update and setting it to performance via the Windows power settings, the issue was resolved.
      The 7i was fine for editing videos, and the model I used was the 2023 one. I'm sure the most recent release is fine and I just got a dud. In the end, I love the Slim 5 for its build and versatility, it's a little workhorse.

    Honestly, I’m impressed at how well it handled most games at a resolution I’d expect you’d need a 4070 for. DLSS+FrameGen is really something.
    As to fan noise, a comfy set of over the ear noise canceling headphones is key for laptop gaming, imo. Fan noise is the type of white noise that noise canceling is excellent at deleting, and I find that plenty of games have a lot of effects that you flat out miss if you have typical weak laptop speakers fighting fan noise.

    • @Payne.

    I came from the Beau Lenovo Legion Slim 5 review video and saw the comment where you mentioned your 16gb Ram had few preformance problems.
    I'm currently looking at buying a 16gb Ram version because we don't have a 32gb Ram option here in Croatia. I only saw positive reviews for it, but your comment concerns me tbh. Would you recommend it?

    • @Payne.
      @Payne.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Karlo, so that comment you read was a follow on from a previous comment Beau made around RAM being the issue. Nothing was tested, it was just speculation that the 16gb of RAM could be a bottleneck. It really depends on what you're using the laptop for, but 16gb will absolutely be enough for a vast majority of games.
      32gb really helps with Premiere while performing other tasks at the same time. I'm sure you'll be fine. Let me know if you go ahead and purchase it!
      Also, just an FYI, in Australia 32gb of RAM was only available in the Ryzen 7 config, is there any chance it's the same for you?

    Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 AMD 14" RTX 4060 32gig 1tb. I find I have a whistling fan noise at low RPM's kind of like a small baby jet engine. Did you find that was the case with your review laptop. Thank you.

      @Payne.  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thank you for the kind words. I don't have that issue.
      It's very loud on performance mode and runs hot but I've never had any whistling noise. Does it happen on balanced mode?

    • @sebastianplusa
      @sebastianplusa 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Payne. What happens. As soon as the fan kicks in no matter what mode right at the beginning you can hear a small faint whistle noise. Almost similar to a faint whistle noise you get in your nose at rare times lol. hmm maybe, anyways. If the fans need to go faster the noise goes away, and you hear clean fans running. But if they need to stay at their lowest RPM's then that noise just sticks around pretty much always. I talked to Lenovo and their more than happy to replace the laptop. So, I am doing some battery tests to see the efficiency at power saving mode and GPU off mode to see how I like it.

    • @stevennorton8960
      @stevennorton8960 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have this model and specs. I can say the screen tearing definitely happens. But it's more likely to happen when you limit fps. Over 100 fps, it doesn't happen nearly as much. But turning vsync on isn't bad. It's just not as good of a technology. In games where it's an issue I just turn it on and I don't notice it anymore or feel any input delay. I'm all for gaync but imo it's nowhere near a deal breaker. OLED is just too good I was not disappointed of the trade-off.
      I will say they had on their specs after release that it supported freesync. That is not the case and they since removed that info from their sheet.
      Tl;Dr
      I never tried the G14. But the OLED was too good and I was concerned with g-sync as well. After using it. I never think about it. And it's a trade-off I considered worth

      Great question. You can disable Auto HDR in Windows manually or have it only activate when a game that doesn't have native HDR supports it.
      There is also a separate piece of software that changes colour profiles called X Rite. It won't impact your video and photo editing.

    The laptop does have an hdmi 2.1 port though, so if you were to connect to a gsync capable tv or external monitor via hdmi would it work?
    I guess I'm asking if the lack of gsync is strictly due to the diaplay panel, or if it's not available in the graphics card

      If you get to the stickers before you use the laptop too many times then it's quite easy to remove and you can use the stickers to pick up bits left behind.
      Once heat gets involved it becomes a bit stickier and then you would probably need to use a good remover. I'm sure someone in the comments will know.
      The big problem is if you leave it for too long, then there is discolouration where the stickers are.

    Helpful review since I am looking into buying the g14 or slim5. Right now the g14 is the better deal since I have seen it go on sale for $1000 and the slim5 for $1050 on Best Buy. They both are good in my opinion and I know the slim5 is better overall but it has soldered ram. Where I am it is only available for 16 gigs not on sale on the Lenovo website so I can only buy it from Best Buy. The problem is that 16 gigs of ram is going to be enough in some time so the slim5 isn't good for the future. The g14 ram can be upgraded so it's just better for me. Do you think that's the right choice or is 16 gigs of ram more than enough for a long time?

      GSync reduces screen tearing when you have a variable refresh rate. Meaning that if the game isn't locked to 30, 60 or 120fps you may see screen tearing...
      Vsync does a lot of the heavy lifting but it isn't perfect. I often lock my games FPS when the game allows which is why an absence of GSync hasn't been a problem for me.

    @MGJ182 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I got it and it arrived with issues. It's my third time purchasing from Lenovo and every laptop I've bought has always come with some form of issue:
    My first Legion refused to recognize the GPU, it wouldn't even appear on the drivers' list until the BIOS would be reset. This occurred on every restart cycle
    Then I got an IdeaPad which short-circuited two months in whenever I would rest my hand to the left of the trackpad.
    The third was this, the Legion Silm 5 14": if I would browse for 10 minutes, the screen would just go black. Didn't happen in games (would have 2+ hour long gaming sessions), only while browsing on any browser (even with Hardware Acceleration turned off).
    Needless to say, I'm not buying from Lenovo again. This laptop was phenomenal architecturally, but I've had too much bad luck with this brand. I was really devastated that the Legion 5 didn't escape the misfortune, because on paper it really is an amazing machine.

    The only reason why I won't buy gaming laptops in 2023 is because for 1 the 14th gen integrated cpu gpu chips are going to be twice as powerful next year. and for 2 it's a total scam you can't get an 18" screen for less than $2k. I want a 14th gen 5050. 18" screen. And I know they won't make one because that would be "poor" performance.
