Totally agree. As you know, I’ve been doing these small studies now for several months. I’m up to over 200 now. I’m also doing them before doing the actual painting to work out any problems. I’ve learned so much from this painting challenge that I started and I’m just going to continue until.....there is no end. Just great one hour practice every day🎨😊🎨😊🎨😊
Great advice! I’m working on the smallest canvas I’ve ever worked on right now, 4”x4” and it’s really helping me stay loose so far. My hope is that the exercise will help when I go up in scale to like a 3’x3’ and still keep the loose and gestural brush strokes.

Well, I dont know how this video just popped up for me in this very day and time, when I have just finished my 3rd session of working on a big canvas, feeling demotivated, cause it doesnt go the perfect way I want it to go. This helps me a lot. Thank you very much for the video!

Your right well said, it hones your eye, makes you subtle discerning, basically you express what and should I continue, keep going and if you can see small first, drawing on a large scale in turn becomes a simplicity also, though and obviously all dependant on your style(s) etc. Life drawing skills and fine sketch detail in general, even with a biro pen is a must to everybodies self discipline..
It's so interesting, how you made a video of where I am at myself... very validating. I have just recently discovered, I like to a put a filter on my inspiration photo to blur it out and then paint using that as my reference. I also enjoy painting small sometimes just to be able to finish something in one sitting. Great advice and great channel!
What a great video! And I totally agree. I first had to grew into painting small but now I LOVE it. It's perfect for trying out new things, getting ideas just out of my head quickly and preparing new large paintings. A total gamechanger in my painting career so far!

1:41 for me that little thing that clicked and bumped me up was auctually one of your tips from a video. You said for highlights to change the chromatic tone of the color instead of adding white. So on a red object make the highlight orange or yellow. Such a little tip but it made a huge improvement in my work
I just discovered your channel & this video was super helpful. After taking a long break from oil painting due to health issues, I found coming back to it wasn't so easy. It's not like riding a bike - not for me anyway.:) I think using these tips will help me get back to it a lot easier. So thank you. Btw, I love how you paint your pathways. They're not super detailed yet they look so real. Hard to explain but I like your style a lot.
Awesome points! I started painting small to paint the figure in short poses, 5 - 20 minutes in tiny ACEO 2.5" x 3.5" paintings. As you said, it's great because it forces us to simplify and get the overall light / dark structure. My issue is trying to stay as abstract and thick with the paint when I go bigger.
Great idea to paint small since I don’t have room for large paintings and also don’t have a lot of room for painting. I did a small beach painting for a friend years ago and did enjoy the small work.
I tend to make small studies on an 8x8 canvas or watercolor paper and then move to the bigger canvas later. It helps in figuring out color, composition and shape.
these are new ideas to me, I always am trying to paint on the biggest canvas I can find/afford/justify so I am excited to flip that on its head and start making smaller concepts. You brought up some great points, thanks for sharing your experiences and expertise!

I’m a new painter. Started with acrylic... yuk! Am I a cop out to want to move onto oils before going thru my initial acrylic paint tubes. It dries ridiculously fast and I find that stupidity stressful. Great vid. Like your style. Thank you!

Thank you for your acknowledgement to my comment..I can paint quite small which I find much easier than painting large as I can paint them very fast...I find that you have to plan much more in painting a large painting...as far as size & proportion of items in the work.
All good advice. However, regarding PhotoShop, I would recommend an excellent much cheaper alternative, Clip Studio Paint. I suggest people try that before spending loads on PhotoShop.

This video came just at the right time for me. I went out for my second plein air painting the other day, and used a 12 x 24 inch panel. The painting looked decent outside from about 15 feet away, but once I got it home and had to look at it up close, it looked horrible. I've been wondering if I should have used a smaller panel. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks Chris. As always, great advise. If I can make one suggestion, if you cannot afford Photoshop, The Procrate app is a good alternative. There is iPhone version that I use to help with composition when I am pleinair painting.
Oh My God, People!!! You REEEEEAAAALLLLY NEED to try a program called ARTRAGE!!! It treats your pixels LIKE ACTUAL PAINT!!! AND IT'S AFFORDABLE!!! Please look up some tutorials on TH-cam, I promise that you will be AMAZED! Really, please try it out!
Gimp is a great free alternative to photoshop, I’ve used it for a few purposes and it can pretty much do what PS does, it’s great (I also do digital art in gimp or krita)
Can you do a video on how to use lots of paint without getting mud? I used to be poor and frugal with expensive oil paint and now have a bad habit of using too little. Thanks for the helpful, unpretentious tips!
I personally find thick paint difficult. I guess I like thin paint cause I feel it is easy to do technical paintings with. I guess it depends on the style you are going for.
Good question! Its good to do them small for studies with little detail but when it comes time to do a full painting I like painting on larger canvas for portraits

Photoshop's a bit expensive, especially if you're only going to use it for those few specific things. There are tons of free alternatives. An unrelated question: Do you ever have issues with black? I'm painting something in black (lamp black) & white and it looks glossy in some areas and sunken in in other areas. It's just a mess. What kind of black do you use? Do you use a pure black or do you mix your own?
I'm an artist and many years ago in a painting class instructor told us never use pure black. To enrich it, give it depth, and lustre, remove flat areas, shiny areas, etc. said to add blue, dark purple, crimson red, veridean green to the black paint. I have been doing this for years, the black is rich and beautiful.. And usually I will add the color that is prominent in the painting, for wxample predominently green? I will add dark green etc. Hope this helps, just a suggestion..

Bought some small canvas panels on a whim recently and now I paint a lot more with less pressure. Sometimes the little ones turn out great,
I will do trading cards. 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Learned a lot doing these! Watercolor or acrylics.

I have really come to love smaller paintings the longer I paint. My favorite size is 7 by 9!

Many artists use Ultramarine and Burnt umber to create a rich black, you can vary either color ratio to change the shade of the black.
