  • In this episode ‪@DriftJesus‬ and Aaron Losey chat about what really matters when building drift cars. You can put a Nascar V8 in a Passat and it works, or a 2JZ in a Corolla and win events. Does air pressure in the back tires make more of a difference in chassis dynamics than carefully planning stuff? Everything seems like a lie at times!

    Dang I could listen to this man talk for hours, thanks for introducing me to his channel!
    As an engineer myself, I definitely related to a lot of the philosophies that he's preaching.
    One comment for Aaron, might want to consider being conscious about letting people finish their points, I've noticed it in the past, but in this topic where you clearly disagreed / were trying to contest his points, it was extremely obnoxious where you'd be cutting in whilst he was talking. Drive me nuts when people do that to me haha.
    Awesome content anyway. Keep it up!

    In racing getting the last 100th of a second rally matters but for drifting allot of things come down to personal preference imo

    I think one of the reasons why there isn't a "meta" build in drifting is because it's a judged sport, unlike road racing where it is much easier to identify what works and what doesn't, so I don't think it will reach the bottom of the funnel any time soon. IMO teams that come up with the best synergy between resources, crew, car, and driver would be the most competitive.

    Man Wout is so right about his point a view. Totally right if FD was like a FIA organization nobody would care.
    I LIVE for obscure car and setups that do good.
    Feels like this sport is still obtainable. But nobody dreams of being Lewis Hamilton but I definitely want to SHREDD like Chelsea!!!!

    I will always stand by the setup aspect of drifting I’ll argue with ppl Bc they have a v8 and can just roast tires, I have to setup I have a low hp i6 I have to really setup the car tire pressure weight reduction etc just to get as much as I can, I’m still new tho still learning

    This is a bit frustrating to watch. Up until minutes 9 you guys are talking about 2 different things. Top level Competitions car vs drift week cars.... i don't think anyone is clocking lap times on drift week while say in FD they do and it seems like where the smaller details matter the most is at the top level of Competition.

      Agree, but DW cars usually aren't "built" as I mentioned. They're more like an evolution, and have to do more than just drift on track. These interviews are unrehearsed and unscripted and Aaron just comes up random and pulls you in to do them, its all zero prep :)

      @@DriftJesus i have watched many of his videos interviewing you ( hopefully all of them) and i love your videos on your philosophy of how to build cars the frustrating part was taking your thoughts for one thing (pro cars) and applying it to something else (drift week/ grass roots).

    Even with the example of James Deane, he moved weight from the rear of his euro fighter forward to get closer to 50/50 weight distribution. Previous i believe it was 52% rear.

      I think that was more tank position, the past years a lot of drivers went from tank behind diff to tank above rear axle

      @@DriftJesus didn't he move the dry sump tank as well?
      As far as his video on it hgk had the philosophy of putting a lot of weight towards the back which gave them a huge advantage off the line but sacrificed in other areas like the pendulum effect or over rotation under braking. I think James went towards a more balanced car as in not so fast off the line but better at angle/transition. But wtf do i know i just watch TH-cam 😆😆

      @@DriftJesus but regardless it proves your point where weight distribution matters a lot or else he wouldn't go through all that trouble and he couldn't just let out 4psi from the tires to be more competitive like Aaron mentioned.     It's like me and my bmx bike. I can get a cookie cutter bike and still do the same tricks and all I do now but having a custom setup and getting a half degree different headtube angle or whatever make it feel more comfortable to ride. Sure in drifting people are great drivers with terrible setups but if you're building from a bare chassis it would be more beneficial to be mindful of weight balance and all to squeeze ever little bit out of it to make it competitive. It might only make a slight difference but that could mean a lit when your at the limits.

    I really love the way you preach Aaron about drifting and builidng a car, but holy shit you were annonying and Wout said that when he said you're just cherry picking the examples. I guess you were trying to keep this interesting but I would have lost my shit hahahahahahahhaha.

    Drifting has lots of competitive platforms and parts. I think what's dictating winners is drivers that understand physically why their car moves how it does, and teams that know how to keep a car on track.

    Aron you gotta think of weight distribution in 3D, not just front and back. For example iron/alum heads will make more of a difference than iron/alum block with weight transfer(also pushrod vs over head cam). Drift is more like drag car setup than road racing in my opinion. What he is saying is that drifting is such a wide range/field, the best/winner is one who can adapt fastest. There is not always a clear mechanical advantage winner like in most other Motorsports. Also lets be real drifting is more like figure skating since it's a judged sport.

    My impression is that tire rules let engines be competitive. If you could run more and more tire to match your 1200, 1300hp engine, then the big displacement cars would be able to run away.

    If every fd team was unlimited budget and unrestricted in what parts could be used thats when you will see that funnel get smaller as to what the perfect setup combo is. As was said, we aren't there yet.

    To add to their discussions on Formula D dominations. If you look at the FD season champions in the last 10years... you'd notice it's not just the drivers winning the championships but they're backed by manufacturer support and a powerhouse of a team.
    W/ the exception of Essa, who i'm not too familiar with about his championship season.

    Weight distribution is definitely important in a 1000+whp FD car. It's not important in a 220whp E36.

      I would argue that it is more important in the e36 IF your driving against top level competitors. Power makes drifting easier, so it can cover a lot of mistakes and bad setup, without power you need to use everything at your disposal (weight distribution) because you cant just stab the throttle to catch up or pull yourself out.

    Well and that's the thing is every track is different and every driver is different and I get building a car for yourself as far as you feeling the car and responding to it.there is so many factors to every event maybe even every lap.

    Aaron I love you mate but your opinions clouded you in this interview.
    Can an OK chassis and driveline be competitive? Sure, depending on the driver. Can an OK driver be MORE competitive in a well thought out and setup car? Maybe. Could a great driver drive better in a well built car? Absolutely. Can an average driver win FD in a cobbled together car because they want to upset Chelsea with an SR in a Chrysler 300C? Chances are low.
    If you're building a car for Pro 1 FD are you trying to build to the highest standard you can or just make it work? When there's so much on the line do you try to mitigate risk or introduce it? Do these teams with tire sponsors care about a lighter rear for tire wear or do they want more weight to get bulk grip to pull on you mid-corner?
    Apples and oranges...

    Everyone comes from their specific background and what they are comfortable with, chassis and power train wise. Long story short. Driver skill/experience/background and comfort in a certain chassis dominates all across the board. Doesn’t matter if it makes sense and is scalable for everyone it works for that individual/ team.
    The same reason why when people change a current chassis to a “better” chassis they almost never surpass the performance outcome of the previous chassis

    I think a car with good weight distribution definetly helps, but if u got the money to override that with power then ig anything is possible

    My XJ buggy makes zero sense on paper if you're using conventional wisdom. It's a big handful on track too. But the few people I've let drive it have confirmed it's an absolute riot to drive, even if it's different and difficult. I still say technique and driver skill is way more important than chassis dynamics.

    It's pretty simple that most people can learn to drive AROUND an imperfect setup. If you're doing a clean chassis build, and have the budget, why not make it perfect?

    Well of course there isnt a best dominating chassis/engine combo in FD. It all depends on driving skill. A V8 mustang/ Corvette or 2J s chassis means nothing if you can't get deep into those outside zones or keep up with your competitors, or worse break your car lol

    I’ve been in a perfect simulation playing games while you’ll did it in real life it’s the EXACT same way in the game accept we have a “perfect” simulation with no limitations. On the none “suspension engineering side”.
    Also the Chelsea statement it’s true, but it’s also the “standard by the book” setup with 30% wants Vs needs.
    I’ve made setups for drivers on the more extreme side than James Deane with a Taylor hull/Vaughn style even.
    Perfect weight distribution for a drift car Is actually between 51-53 percent front bias not rearward unless track get smaller again or less power.
    Also the chassis difference HAS BEEEN BEEEN happened you can’t even add a 4 link Japanese style straight axle setup to a AE86 or the reason a Miata NC is not competitive on top of the need for a Minimum weight vs tires size in formula drift it’s trash which is why there’s no skill gap either.
    The formula drift rule book caters to newer longer wheels based cars with more weight because if the tire rules too.
    Not to mention the drag slicks engineered specifically to drift like Daigo on Achilles 123s XD

      @@DriftJesus well he was asking something I find quite relatable. He was saying how drifting seems to be strange because you can take a car that shouldn't do well (from a engineering a balance perspective) and it can still be very competitive even though weight is off its barely kept together etc. The other guy was saying it's not spec racing etc which is all true. And we don't have the perfect setup yet. But still feel like Aaron's point was how come a shitter can do well. In part at least and I find myself wondering the exact same thing so was curious haha
