Fun fact: this song actually tells the story of the real-life Russian Air Force's Night Bombers Regiment 588, an all-female regiment of aviators who performed nighttime stealth/harrassment bombings against the Nazi forces in WW2. It was actually the Nazis who gave them the nickname "Night Witches" ("Nachthexen" in German) due to the broomstick sound their planes made when they turned off their engines and coasted near-silently over their targets to perform precision bombing runs in pitch blackness. It's definitely an awesome addendum to WW2 history worth reading about, but I'll admit the song works perfectly with Tanya anyway (despite the Empire being psuedo-Germany).

Well, from what I can tell, Youjo Senki is an anime that is set in an alternate world's world war equivalent, from which time period many Sabaton songs were stories from. For example, Sabaton has an entire album that is focused on "The Great War" and a good portion of the album "Heros" is songs set in World War 2. Specific songs that aren't from that time period are still mostly gunpowder based military action, or tributes to the Metal genre of music, such as Poltava or Metal Machine.

The main character Tanya is based off of Rommel. Yet her life and actions are that off the Red Baron. Thus the Red Barron & Ghost/Desert Fox became the legendary Devil of the Rhine. A single myth like Ace, leading their small elite task force of Ace's to eliminate all invaders of the fatherland. Many fear this flying circus, for it is irregular. Able to reach heights that many thought to not exist. Brutally efficient, they rule the skies like no other could dream off. They are, the 203rd mage battalion. The most elite of all elites. Though stopable, still merciless as tidal waves. They will not stop, till the war is over.
I don't know about sabaton songs but this one is made fore this show

It's surprising in terms how fitting it seems. Ok I know Tanya is pretty much on side of pseudo-Germany but same time this war is neither 1st nor 2nd world war (started bit after date of 1st one). Eeeeither way: considering there ain't many female officers... yup it's Tanya song XD
Especially considering 70% of her missions were indeed sudden attacks enemy did not expect in wildest imagination. Not mention 'violence' side with Tanya herself being someone with firepower of Schwerer Gustav :)

The real life all out WWI began in 1914.
In Youjo Senki : Tanya volunteers to conscription launched by country in fear of 'imminent war' (which is not stated how long after that began but pretty soon) once she is 6 y.o.. and it is 1920 alredy by then. It is small difference but war began there least 6 years later than in real case. I imagine it had same time a different origin but sadly as far as I know its not stated and 1st thing we know about it is sudden attack of Dacia in 1923 and beginning of war on Dacian front.
Admittedly though the overall tech advancement implements many WWII elements such as rocket engines.
Well, we can call it something like WW 1,5 I guess since it's beginning draws closer to WWI but overall tendencies are alike to WWII
It is a mix between WW I and WW II probably the first season more WW 1 focused (same situation but a bit later) and the second more WW 2 focused. Also there is one thing that would actually speak for WW 2. In the last battle against "the republic" there were clearly Pz III used, which is WW 2 tech. In WW 1 there were no tanks.

Youjo senki, from what I've seen in sabaton music videos, is a mix of mostly WWI, some of WWII, and futuristic fiction
I'll try to summerize it without giving much spoilers.
One day Being X(God) stops time for a non believer who's about to be murdered. After about 3 minutes of back & forth. Being X comes to the conclusion that the reason he does not believe is because there is no need to believe, because every need is met.
Being X then sends the man into a world full poverty & hate & on the verge of war. when Tanya is born a war breaks out (1924). By the time Tanya is old enough to enroll(1933), she climbs the ranks to Major. Using her/his(?) knowledge of how things turned out in her/his previous life. She suspects other world powers will join the fray soon. She becomes the leader of an elite mage unit meant to push back invaders. Throughout the war Being X keeps turning to world against our beloved Tanya.
All in all, it's a great anime. As for the whole SUB or Dub part. I'd say Dub. Normally I'd say sub but it was rushed & many translation mistakes are in it. As for the dub, it's actually pretty good. By good I mean, Cowboy beepbop level of good.
