WHY lefties are better footballers

  • What do Da Vinci, Mozart and Picasso have in common with Maradona, Rivaldo and Messi? They're all geniuses. And they're all lefties. Controlled by the right side of the brain, they're special people. They're more creative and more emotional. Just clichés? Kick off! reporter Constantin Stüve and Mönchengladbach's Oscar Wendt explain why left footers are different class.

      Your clearly not getting the point. Of course there are world class right footed players hes says that in the video, the point is that there if often a lot more right footed players than left footed players but, there is an abnormally high amount of world class players who are left footed. eg every 1 in 10 right footed players may be world class where as every 3 in 10 left footed players are world class.

    Here's my observation:
    More right footed player=more practice against and with right footed player
    Results in:
    Left footed players as rare = more unknown to the majority(right footed players)
    *Results in:*
    Left footed players harder to predict therefore harder for rights to defend/attack
    *Results in* :
    Left footed players used to right footed players' movements and abilities = also figure they'd continue working on their strength (left foot) to be even more unpredictable for right footed players
    *Ultimately Left footed players dominate *
    Thanks to their minority/rarity.

    • @margofalgo5089
      @margofalgo5089 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Temporary Kinda exactly. It’s the idea of competition vs cooperation, where competitive dominant species such as dogs and cats are 50% left handed and 50% right handed, while cooperative dominant species such a humans are 15% left handed, and 85% right handed. Because cooperation benefits people who are the same, for if you’re the same, whatever works for me, will work for you, so it’s easier for humans to cooperate and share things such as weapons, machines, and other tools, since majority of people have the same dominant hand. But then there is competition which benefits the unusual, so you’ll see in terms of competition there will be a mix up in physical features, such as height, size, weight, and of course dominant hands, because the more different you are to other people in your species, the better you benefit in terms of competition. So that could be an explanation for why people such as Messi, who is left footed, but also shorter than majority of the people he faces benefits in football, similar to how Ronaldo who is taller and physically stronger than most wingers that defenders face, also benefits. It’s just simply the idea of being different than others that benefits you. Hence why left handed people benefit in a right handed world, same as how right handed people benefit in a left handed world.

    • @sikeman
      @sikeman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      This is true. I have been playing against a left footed striker that plays in my team, so during matches in training we play against each other. I'm a defender (CB) and I've played a lot against him, it's been 2 years now. At first it was really difficult to predict, as he is also very skillful, but then as you get used to him it kind of gets easy as he will always use his left foot no matter what.

      This applies to martial arts too and it was my first thought when I saw the title.
      It's an advantage because its harder to play against something you have no means to train against.
      If there's more to it than that it should be researched not just debated.
      But I remember my martial arts teacher had us take turns training vs the only left handed disciple we had on the dojo, and it was hard and they had an easy time because fighting vs right handed people is natural to them, *but then they had the same problem when they went to a tournament, the left handed had an extremely hard time fighting another left handed individual.*

      It’s in proportion to right footed players, lefties tend to have the numbers since almost every left footed player is good, compared to right footed players.
      The only way to know would be if the population was 50/50, not 80-20 in favor of right.
      Also, one of the best pitchers (Cy Young {Literally has an award named after him}, or modern day Clayton Kershaw of the LA Dodgers) and quarterbacks in the NFL was left handed (Steve Young). Of course, most are right handed, but lefties can be good at other sports too.
      McGregor is left handed, and he’s one of the greatest UFC fighters ever. Lefties may be small in number, but the ones that do, tend to stand out.

    As a right footed player, what strikes me most in dis video was this: Lefties more often than righties work on their strenghs (Messi, Robben, Rivaldo). On the other hand right footed players more often use both feet (RC7, Neymar etc..). Dunno ...I personally and definitelly on purpose train my left foot. i can pass, shoot, cross, do some skills with both feet. Sometimes even better than my stronger right. For example today i played futsal..i scored two goals (one with right + one with left). My question -should i work more on my strenghts rather than weaknesses ( maybe my weakness isnt my left foot-its kinda bonus to be able to use both legs in every situation.......MAYBE my true weakness is my right foot...bloody hell XD)? ty for patience

    The main finding of the study was that about 12.1% of people were left-footed. There was a strong, but not perfect, overlap with handedness. While only 3.2% of right-handers where left-footed, about 60.1% of left-handers were left-footed. Thus, the chance of being left-footed is considerably higher for a left-hander than for a right-hander. Men had a slightly higher chance of being left-footed than women and professional athletes had a higher probability of being left-footed than the general population. Interestingly, footedness was less influenced by cultural and social factors than handedness, probably because no parents ever try to relearn their left-footed kids to be right-footed.

    It's probably impossible to definitively prove but I definitely think there is something to this theory. I played for a highly competitive soccer team growing up. We were a big club, probably around 50 kids in my age group divided onto 3 regular teams and 1 elite team where the best players from each of those teams would play together against an older age group. Of those 50 kids, every single left-footed player was on the elite team. There was not a single lefty who wasn't a top player in our club. And the two guys who ended up having the most successful careers from our club were among those left-footed players. It's just one anecdote but I do find it very interesting that none of the lefties were bad players. It's something that I've been thinking about a lot, so this theory really resonates with me. There's just something about lefties.

    Here is my theory. If you have a left foot, you are more intuitively genius, while if you are right footed you are thoughtfully genius.
    Thats why right footed wingers and attackers are ball magicians like Zidane, Ronaldinho, Pele, Ronaldo, Okocha, Zlatan etc. They have alot of tricks up their sleeve since they use the left part of their brain and have a lot of moves for every situation.
    While the left footed players play more intuitively and it seems like the foot is glued to the ball,but since they play more intuitively they get stuck in certain habits like Messi or Robben and dont use many tricks.

Hence most footballers grow playing against right footed, makes it easier to defend against them, also these guys forgot to mention some great people who are right handed, like Aristotle , Einstein, Socrates, Plato, and top footballers like ronaldinho, cafu, maldini, ronaldo,. Statistically, since left handed are lesser in population, any generic amount of left handed geniuses will out way the total population of right handle, as there's a smaller total sample size out of both right and left handed people. Where as for right handed people its the opposite. This creates an illusion that left handed are more geniuses,

    As a lefty myself I have to sadly point out that lefties use more of the right side of the brain is just a myth. Many studies have already debunked this idea. ,
    it is often cited that around 95% of right-handers are “left hemisphere dominant”. This is not the same as the “left brain” claim above, it actually refers to the early finding that most right-handers depend more on the left hemisphere for speech and language. It was assumed that the opposite would be true for lefties. But this is not the case. In fact, 70% of left-handers also process language more in the left hemisphere. Why this number is lower, rather than reversed, is as yet unknown.

    The best players in history are ambidextrous, they're just too rare because the circumstances that make them go both feet are particularly rare. Pele was a prime example of this, he was right footed but could do the same things with both legs he trained every aspect of his body because at age 8 he promised to his dad he would win the World Cup. In the case of Maradona after Goikoetxea broke his leg he had to work intesively to recover it but couldn't get it to how it was before so he improve his right one a lot even tho he still overwhelmingly prefered his left foot. Then there's Johan Cruijff who as a wee lad was told he couldn't play because of his physique, he was naturally right footed so he had trained his left foot to become left footed. More recently, Diego Forlan thought his left foot was so useless that he began training it and became ambidextrous with a left foot that had much more power and almost as much precision as the right one.

    I'm cross-dominant right-hand/left-foot. Like Wendt said, coaches always played me at LW or LB as the only leftie on the team. That meant I modelled my game after players like Giggs and Roberto Carlos. I think this is part of what makes lefties generally finesse players-all of our role models are wizards! It's a little bit like wearing the no.10 or 7, you know there's an expectation of the kind of player you need to be.
    One season I was playing up front and recovering from a knee injury which meant I had to take most shots with my right foot. It was my best scoring season ironically as I think I focussed a lot more on getting into "easier" scoring positions because I was shooting on my weaker side.

    As a leftie i tend to like playing through balls on either side of the pitch. It feels so simple and effective. Being left footed has advantages like when facing right against and opponent it’s easier to change directing to the left. I’ve always felt special as a left footed but it has also many disadvantages. It’s very hard to work with righties.

  • @klumszy
    @klumszy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    'm a lefty and haven't played in years, but thinking back, something that helped me a lot was being pretty good with my right foot too.
    From an early age, I would kick the ball with both feet because of one reason, Cruyff. My dad said if you want to be as good as Cruyff you have to learn to play with both feet. Well, I heard that as a 6 or 7 year old and I was sold - who didn't want to be as great as Cruyff? Unfortunately I never quite made it to Cruyff level, and although I practiced all the time, my right foot never became as good as my left. However, my right was good enough where I never had to think twice about using it. If a ball was coming to my right foot and I had a shot on goal or good pass option, I took it. If I was dribbling and going to my right to get off a shot was an option, I went right and took the shot. So overall, it just opened my options up.
    At the time, I never thought about it. I thought everyone practiced and played with both foot. It wasn't until more recently that I've started watching more soccer and noticed how many pro players are exclusively one-footed. It's surprising to see missed opportunities because they waste that fraction of a second to move the ball to their strong foot, but by that time the defense is there and the opportunity is lost.
    Cruyff was my motivation, but I also wonder if being one of the only lefties on my team made me want to learn to kick with my right too - you know, "to fit in". Not that I felt I didn't fit in, but I just wonder if lefties are more likely to learn to use their right because of some subconscious feeling;

  • @AlexGrtner
    @AlexGrtner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Ok so I think the fact that 90% of football greats are right footed sort of cancels this out. But another question, why is it left footed players are normally so bad with their weaker foot?
    Ie. Messi, bale, Robben, Cairney, Di Maria, Sturridge etc. Whilst most "two footed" players are naturally right footed ie. Eriksen, Forlan, Zidane, David Villa, Pedro, Cazorla etc.

    • @dublindave78
      @dublindave78 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. The video touches on this a bit, saying Lefties practice their 'special skill' more, but it doesn't explain why this is the case.
      Have there been any great two-footed players who were naturally left-footed?

    • @AlexGrtner
      @AlexGrtner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dublindave78 Only ones I can think of are Ousmane Dembele and Brahim Diaz, but in interviews they both say they aren't sure which is their strongest foot. Brahim takes freekicks with his right foot, which means maybe he's more naturally right footed, but we can't be sure haha.
