Older movies had to be so clever in their writing. They weren't allowed to say so many things, so they had to smartly imply them and it makes it so unique.
@@thelastmoviestanding It makes for an awkward scene and at the time being drunk was a taboo, Cary Grant's face when she walks in is hilarious. Those eyebrows 🤣
Your video gives me hope for the future, that younger generations will discover and appreciate B&W films. It's interesting that in this day and age B&W has practically become a new film genre. I have to admit that when you started talking about HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, I almost passed out and fell on the floor. It's such a great flick for so many reasons, but it's the last thing in the world I would have expected you to mention. Thanks for recommending Movie Mass. I just subbed. Some films I would recommend if you haven't already seen them: THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955), LAURA (1944), BLACK SUNDAY (1960) and Martin Scorsese's first feature WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR? (1967).
Some of my favorite B&W films are Night Of The Demon, 12 Angry Men, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Eyes Without A Face, The Tarnished Angels, Good Night And Good Luck, The Train, Experiment In Terror, Pick-up On South Street, Manhattan, One-Eyed Jacks, Le Silence De La Mer, Odd Man Out, Wings Of Desire, The Elephant Man, Marketa Lazarova, Ice Cold In Alex and Rapture. Whew!
Having the title "Sin City" edited to still be in red was a nice touch. Cool video! For the longest time growing up, I never gave black and white movies a fair shake. I used to have that stupid mindset that old=bad. Obviously that's incorrect, but I chalk it up to a maturity thing. I just got the 4k of Seven Samurai in the mail and I'm pumped to watch it!
High school confidential I looked up. It’s got a great underrated cast in it. And apparently the European version had two scenes extra that the US one didn’t. Because they were too explicit at the time to show in America . I would love to see that version. A movie that I can highly recommend in black-and-white and white is Truman Capote in cold blood based on a true story. And of course, Schindler’s list you probably have that one already
Firstly, your intro music is an absolute banger! I always crank up my home theater before I press play. One incredibly important one you forgot was Seven Samurai. Then again, you can probably make a second B&W top 10 consisting of nothing but Kurosawa films.
There has never been a channel where I have had to make sure I’m still subscribed because the videos don’t come out for a week lol missed you 💪🏼 great video 🎉
I like watching black and white films more from a technical standpoint. Watching how each shot was framed is like watching someone paint with light in the absence of color. It feels like there is a lot more attention to detail in the contrast areas and it’s not always as delicately cared for in color film.
Another movie where the B&W really adds tons of atmosphere that couldn't ever be replicated in colour is Robert Wise' "The Haunting". In my eyes still one of the scariest movies of all time.
Great topic. I'm still just dipping my toes into black and white. My next movie haul video will have one of your favorites. It'll be a first-time watch for me.
@thelastmoviestanding I think you'll be pretty happy, after watching this video of yours. I'm about to sit in front of the camera for a couple of hours. 🫠
In Cold Blood starring Robert Blake...the rain on the window scene...His Girl Friday was the first movie to have the actors stepping on each other lines. Irene Dunne movies...Pennies from Heaven...a three hanky tear jersey.
Great list Brian. You won't be sorry if you pick up Double Indemnity on 4K. Also can't go wrong with Anatomy of a Murder, On The Waterfront, Dr. Strangelove, For All Mankind, and Eureka's Touch Of Evil all on 4K. High Sierra and Notorious Criterion Blu-Rays are good, And a couple more recent B&W's I like are Raging Bull on 4K, Young Frankenstein and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid on Blu-Ray are good for a laugh
Notorious is a personal favorite of mine, I recently showed it to my wife for the first time. Just picked up the 4k of Double Indemnity too, haven't seen it on 4k yet so I'm stoked.
Great video! You know I'm a big Marilyn Monroe fan and Some Like it Hot is a Billy Wilder film that is a favorite of mine the MM did and is beautiful B&W... The horror anthology I want do next will have segments of black and white in it and I had planned to do my SciFi horrir in B&W..I'm with you, it is awesome
@@AVAPopCulture the original plan for my current future was to be shot B/W, but once I started adding the school dance scenes in there I decided it wouldn’t be best. But there is a B/W dream sequence in the movie I kept
First watched Casablanca when I was like 10. I don't know what even prompted me to pop that tape in, but I loved it. My mom then started getting more Bogart movies. If you like Film Noir, I would highly recommend The Big Sleep.
Some great B&W movies for sure, I also love: It's A Wonderful Life, Ed Wood, The Thing From Another World, The Last Picture Show & CLERKS. An honorable mention is Schindler's List even though it was 99% in B&W.
Great video! Really got me into trying to find The Awful Truth and High School Confidential as I haven't seen either of those. Regarding B&W movies, you could easily do a list of only Bogart films. Besides Casablanca and Sabrina (which are both wonderful), The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is suberb Bogart movie gems - highly recommended! Best modern B&W movie must for sure be Schindler's List, if you can call a 90's movie modern. Since I'm Swedish, I have to promote Det sjunde Inseglet/The Seventh Seal, which is a great B&W movie with a young Max von Sydow.
I highly recommend Ed Wood by Tim Burton if you haven't seen it already. Shot entirely in black and white on 35mm film and was a love letter to B movie sci-fi movies of the 50s
A movie I recommend you watch is "Island of Lost Souls." From 1932, Charles Laughton plays Dr. Moreau in Erle C. Kenton's adaptation of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." My favorite black & white movie is "Psycho." That is a movie that work horribly in color. A modern black & white movie that's kind of cool is "Renaissance" from 2006. It's animated and stars Daniel Craig. I agree with your opinion on modern movies being converted into black & white, like "Mad Max: Fury Road." I own "The Mist" on 4K and it has both the colored version and black & white version. I like the colored version better because I think the movie was lit for color, even though Frank Darabont originally wanted to release it in black & white. I also own "Godzilla Minus One" in both color and black & white. Even though it was filmed in color, the Minus Color version was edited by colorist Masahiro Ishiyama in post-production for releasing it in black & white. I prefer the colored version.
Great video! I love B&W movies too. I grew up watching them. I never knew how important lighting is when making a B&W movie, I thought it was just about removing the color. Have you ever watched The Artist? I think it’s B&W but I never watched it, I think it came out 10-15 years ago. Thanks.
For a film that must have been “blacklisted,” ‘Baby Doll’ was doing good to get 4 Oscar nominations: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. It was also nominated for a few BAFTAs, winning 1. Not bad for a “blacklisted” film…😅. Sorry, I couldn’t help it. I’m surprised that you didn’t mention ‘Clerks,’ shot on B/W film stock or ‘The Artist,’ which was nominated for Best Picture. There were also a couple B/W films in the 1970s including ‘The Last Picture Show’ and ‘Paper Moon,’ both Peter Bogdanovich directed films. Both have had Criterion releases with ‘Paper Moon’ having been released this week, I believe. In addition to these films, I have a number of B/W films starring Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis and a couple Joan Crawford. Many of them have had Criterion BluRay or 4K releases. If you like young Cary Grant, you should check out three of his best, also co-starring Kate Hepburn: ‘Bringing Up Baby,’ a screwball comedy, ‘Holiday’ (both from 1938) and ‘Philadelphia Story’ (1940) also co-starring James Stewart. And another great 50s B/W classic is ‘East of Eden’ with James Dean, Julie Harris and Raymond Massey.
Only straight Black/White i know out of my head i have is The Saint S1&2 on dvd. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a mix. PTS of Casino Royale 2006 is in B&W. I have one episode of a Superman animated shorts and first 7 Seasons of Bewitched in color who are original in B&W.
Lighthouse i loved the first time i seen it when it released on bluray. I think if you understand it's a take on how stir crazy Lighthouse attendees went being left alone for months at a time and dealing with the oil fumes and nothing to keep entertained
@thelastmoviestanding i haven't seen the Northman yet but any time I try to watch the Witch i always get bored and turn it off half way through so I have yet to finish it same with Hereditary so I need to get a chance and sit down and watch them to see how they end to see if I like them
Older movies had to be so clever in their writing. They weren't allowed to say so many things, so they had to smartly imply them and it makes it so unique.
Very true. The Hayes code
The Awful Truth is top notch glad you enjoyed!
Yea it was really good, since don’t know how I feel about out the ending when she shows up “drunk” to the dinner but else I loved
@@thelastmoviestanding It makes for an awkward scene and at the time being drunk was a taboo, Cary Grant's face when she walks in is hilarious. Those eyebrows 🤣
It's my favorite film of the 30s and one of my favorite films of any decade! You've got good taste sir
@@popculturemass As do you my friend!
My brother at heart! There's nothing like a well lit, gorgeously shot, flawlessly framed black and white film. So much detail in the absence of color.
If you haven't seen them yet, an amazing early Kubrick B&W is "Paths of Glory", another very good one is "The Killing".

You should watch Night of the Hunter and Bergman's Persona (some shots from Ida are directly taken from Persona). Best B&W cinematography.

One of my favorites is Broadway Danny Rose. I like it in black and white but I do think it would be cool to see a color version.
