What I mean by “alien”.... it is a sound that has been lost through time. That's why it sounds alien to our modern ears. More videos and musical releases like this should help to rectify that! I didn’t mean to cause offence or even debate! However, by reading all the comments I realise I really am a very uneducated man and have an awful lot to learn about early music and European culture! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!

You know, that's one thing i've always admired about Native Americans, that you in spite of all the shit that's happened over the years are still in touch with your roots, but i think we Europeans are beginning to feel a longing back, like our ancestors are calling to us from the other side, making us feel more interested in rediscover our roots and our ancient indigenous ways, truly our gods were only napping and now they're awake and people are flocking back to the ways of old if by some deep rooted primal urge. Keep strong and never forget your roots, culture, tribes and religion, in the end we would'nt even be here if not for the ancestors, who paved the way for us.

    Got Nafiskr Orf

What am I supposed to do
If I want to talk about peace and understanding
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall
But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace
But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking...
So my tongue shall become iron
And my words the mighty roar of war
Revealing my divine anger´s arrow shall strike
All action for the good of all
I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun
    The sword is soft
In the fire of the furnace
    It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
    They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain
    Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
    The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    And bliss in my heart
    Coexistence, Conflict, combat
    Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you
I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise
    To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification
    Look like dying embers
    Look like dying embers

Ancient Greek music was more refined and gentle so in a sense this sound can be quite alien for alot of people.

There are parts of Stonehenge that date back around 10,000 years, and it is established that this place is (and was) of spiritual and religious significance. When I listen to Heilung I can't help but wonder what these pre-roman invasion peoples were like. The stones are at least as old as the pyramids, possibly older, and it is clear the site was once much larger and parts of it much much older still. I guess they disappeared with the arrival of foreign swords.

  • @Whisperlost
    @Whisperlost 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Heilung is sounds from the northern european iron age and viking period. We used everything from running water, human bones, reconstructed swords and shields up to ancient frame drums and bronze rings in the songs. The lyrics contain original texts from rune stones and preserved spear shafts, amulets and other artifacts. Furthermore poems, which either deal with historical events or are translations/ interpretations of the originals. Every attempt to link the music to modern political or religious points are pointless, since Heilung tries to connect the listener to the time before Christianity and its political offsprings raped and burned itself into the northern european mentality. Heilung means healing in german and describes the core of the sound. It is supposed to leave the listener eased and relaxed after a sometimes turbulent musical journey.
So its not scandinavian, its protogermanic

Since you are in the mood to debunk myths about culture I offer this correction to you. Christianity never dominated the world. Catholicism did. Middle ages Catholicism came from Roman Catholicism created by the previous Roman Empire. The Romans were very good at adaptation and absorbtion of cultures. They conquered many peoples and allowed them to self govern but under Roman rule. When the Empire tried to crush ancient Christianity they found that Christians just kept springing up. Rather than keep fighting an idea, they choose to adopt Christianity into the Empire but made Christianity play by Rome's rules. They bent the teachings to their will and like many Pagan religions, it was fundamentally changed forever to the point it's not the original belief system anymore. This is why our holidays are such a mash up of Catholic and Pagan practices. So no, Christianity did not take over the world, Roman Catholicism did along with Suni and Shiite Islam. The latter which has murdered and enslaved magnitudes more than any "Christian" religion has ever done. At least we can say they're consistent. People can't even agree on what doctrine of Christian faith is the best.

Saxons, lombards, Varangians, Rus, Goths( both the ostro and vestrigoths, the people in Beowulf which partially takes place in Sweden), Vandals and so on were all scandinavians looking for new lands to settle. Might reflect climate changes or a long period of war and infighting.

Heilung aims to bring the organic original sounds from the Iron age until late antiquty. They sing in the Proto-Germanic language, also all their instruments are handmade by themselves.
In my opinion they might well be the most accurate representation of Iron Age music,so something like a religious rite/a large sacrifice to the gods for a better harvest for example could very likely have this kind of music. All the lyrics in their songs are actually original words from spear shaft archeological finds ,and various other real sources,so thats why the lyrics are all saying we are not afraid,we will laugh at death herself, and you will die etc. That all has been found on spear shafts inscribed in runes...
I think the part of the song where the woman is singing is supposed to present the joy of life, and when the lead singer started singing that is supposed to represent the rough, dry and bloody side of life that is also a part of life,as much as is the joy.So joy and suffering,I think.
They also have a slogan that goes something like this :
Remember, that we all are brothers
All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind
We all descend from the one great being
    That was always there
Before people lived and named it
    Before the first seed sprouted
They stand for preserving your heritage, and honoring your most ancient ancestors, something i myself stand for aswell.I would also like to mention something I noticed recently, recently there has been a real rise of all this revival on the ancestors,I personally see this in the Germanic culture,Celtic culture and Slavic culture the most, there is probably other people from other backgrounds doing the same but I didn't see it personally.

They are tapped through a lot of the video, but you don't always see them. Just like life, maybe you have to keep looking for the things that keep on going, and that keeps you going, despite the "soundscape" occurring in your mind or life.

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 10,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group. I recommend this video of her concert.

I knew this was from the ancient Tuetonic religion and was very happy to experience it. Since then I've been goobling up all the Heilung my economy will let me and wanting more. I hope they are all doing well and producing more.

I wonder why you compare it with metal mate....I think it is what it is called by Heilung itself: Amplified History...wich means traditional / spiritual music (from different cultures/mostly nordic or germanic) combined with modern techniques like microphones / sequencers and samplers...The performance is more like a ceremony with the same intentions. If you listen to the way the sounds are arranged you can find tons of elements of tribal music (more like techno music arrangements).... If you ever have the opportunity watch them life go for it!
    It`s incredible!

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm guessing the raspy vocals, which are characteristic of nu-metal and such subgenres. I personally would describe Heilung as non-electronic electronica, as it gives the same experience as trance and other electronica subgenres. Which you did note, after the fold.

I would seriously travel to Europe with seeing them as a primary objective.

    The concert was outstanding !
The last number " Hamrer hippyer" was 10 times better than on the cd. Actually I thought it was a new number .... Maria Frantz noticed a halfnaked viking in the front scene who was dancing and headbanging and she came slowly and played the drum just in front of his head for 5 minutes - Fantastic !!
I cant wait to hear the new cd in the spring of 2019 - Heilung has a glorius future !!

the words Krigsgaldr is two words. first word is "krig" which is war. the second is "galdr" which is essentially a spell or incantation. put together you have a war spell or war incantation that is meant to rile the spirits of your warriors and remind them of the glory of Valhalla, should they be lucky enough to meet a foe formiddable enough to take their life in battle.

Absolutely LOVE Heilung. The Lifa concert video is amazing. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to/watched the whole thing. I'm a 33 year old Native American (100% Native American, not "1/64th Cherokee" like so many *ahem* white people like to claim) but, for whatever reason, I never felt any real connection to my heritage. I found Heilung early last year and as soon as I heard their music, I felt..... home. Their sound speaks to me like nothing else I've ever experienced. I really can't explain it. I've seen others say the same thing. Heilung are definitely something very special.
Side Note. I've been subscribed to your channel for a few months now. Great content. I'm just now going through your older videos.

Not because I'm not aware of it's reconstructive nature but rather because it's something that my ansectors (Ancient Greeks) would have probably called "βάρβαρο" or "barbarian". But I think that it's this urefinined nature that makes it so interesting and compelling to listen to.
