Part of the reason the crowd is quiet is because this was their first EVER live show. Their album had been out for a while but hardly anyone had ever heard this band or this type of music before. Like everyone when they first come across Heilung their thoughts are 'What the hell is this? I love it,' :)

Maria Franz has so much talent it take three bands to express it all. This is just one of the three.

  • @martinsriber7760

First part is invocation, second part is basically Proto-Germanic ABCs and last part is Maria going ethereal.
Edit: As for suggestions, anything from LIFA really.

Maria is doing kind of Kulning 😁

    • @FenrisEx
      @FenrisEx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

second part is more than just the ABC. It's a proto-germanic chanting. The ABC wasn't just symbols but had real meaning behind them. So, yes, technically it was an ABC but chanting them had a meaning. The real meaning got lost, as we are not able to identify the meaning of the symbols anymore but could reconstruct them and do some research what they could have meant. What is probably off to the (original) meaning by miles. As different tribes had their own dialect and use of words (some of them not even written but later on described)
But hey, I'm not a language specialist. As the proto-german language is very complicated (pre- early- late-) to reconstruct and the times these languages got redefined, emerged and lost it's hard to tell. But it was more of a chant (as every letter had a meaning of itself) than just an ABC for kids.
Sorry, I didn't want to come off as an asshole here, just to clarify it's not just the ABC, but a little bit more in the background (probably not very much more, but more)

    • @martinsriber7760
      @martinsriber7760 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FenrisEx You can chant ABCs. And each symbol having meaning is pretty common. Phoenician or Cyrillic alphabet are other examples.

    • @FenrisEx
      @FenrisEx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@martinsriber7760 I just wanted to add that it's not the ABC we know today, but is different when you write it or enchant it. It's not like screaming AAAAAAAAA and FFFF. It is more than that as the letter itself has power.
As Isaid before, I don't want to sound lik a nitpicking raisin shitting guy here. Just want to clarify that the ABC is not like the ABC you learn about in sesame street.

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 1,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. I hope this review helps you to understand a bit the context of this musical group.
Some curiosities. When they built the drums for the group, one of which is made from horse skin, a doctor drew blood from the three members of the group and painted the drums and some of their clothes with it. The male singer with the deep voice is a great tattoo artist and very professional. The bones the girl plays with are human bones and sometimes they have had problems in the countries of the tour to introduce them through the border from the country where the concert was held.
The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language.
"Harigasti Teiwa" is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several inscriptions including the words "harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as • Come, guest Tyr", since this line was trying to invoke a God for war.
The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. This is also known as runic song. Come, guest Tyr For this invocation I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon the one of the Sun to aid our army
    Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz,
    Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo,
    Hagal, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera,
    Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowelu,
    Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz,
    Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala.
    In English:
    Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath,
    Travel, Torch, Gift, Joy,
    Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest,
    Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun,
    Creator, Birch tree, Horse,

About the vocals... he used overtone singing / throat-singing. No recording techniques or anything like that. She used overhead singing to reach those high notes and keep up the power in the first part of her solo, then she just went full on power vocals (sort of what heavy metal vocalists used to do back in the day). No "modulations" whatever they mean to you, nor effects. Other than that, great reaction and love the fact you don't interrupt the video too much. Cheers!

@Connor Ó Dubhlaoich Hello ... I think you have not understood the context of the sentence in which I communicate to educatermarine that Heilung does not sing in the Gothic language as he said, because Gothic is an artistic style. What I am communicating to him is that the words that he believed to be Gothic are actually Latin words. One of the languages that heilung uses in his songs. Of course most are Germanic languages. I have never said otherwise. I have only remarked that Gothic as a language does not exist and that those words that he educatemarine believed to be Gothic were simply Latin. Like for example the word Regina. A greeting.

th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Opening Ceremony (chant/prayer with band and public about Yggdrasil, the tree of life, that we are all part off)
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html95 - In Maidjan (the corruption) about creation: the gods are called to create the sun, and everything that sprouts from it. Then the Elder Futhark is chanted: the runic alphabet. Each rune both a sound humans make to communicate, a letter, as a 'concept' in itself, for example S, Sowilo, also means 'Sun', M(annaz) also means 'Man', D(agaz) also means 'day' (concept of time) etc. Then Odin is asked to look at our struggle.
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Alfadhirhaiti (All names that the allfather, god, has) About the things created and experienced by god through his creation. From wolf to human warriors. Who will always continue to exist, because we remember them. Then follows a list of names of 'god'. Basically: 'everything'. ('God of the hanged' is a reference to their religion, where they thought god hanged himself upside down in the tree of life, to splinter in 'life', and to experience the universe through us, so god himself, as an entity is 'dead', and only continues to live, because we remember him, we are 'gods eyes'. Jup: Its complicated)
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html390 - Carpathian Forest is a reference to the protogermanic greatest accomplishment of defense: the battle with the roman invaders in the carpathian forest: where complete legions of romans 'went in, but never came out'. The war-chants of the 'pagan' army coming from the dark woods still makes any roman shiver.
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html628 - Krigsgaldr (war chant) about what choice we are left with if someone invades our lands.
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Hakkerskaldyr (shield formation) Lyrics: 'Hey! Every men! Hear our voices! Listen to us now:
In thy hands is death Thy people we shall slaughter And no mercy will be given Fearless we are Death makes us laugh War is what we want
Thou! Dies! In this battle thou shall dies.'
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Fylgija Ear / Futhorck. Fylgija Ear () : "The grave is terrible to every earl, when the fixed flesh begins, the corpse cooling, to choose the earth, paleness as its bedmate. Fruits fail, joys depart, mankind ceases to be. " first in (old) german, then in old english. This describes that both sides in war mourn exactly the same. Then, in 'Futhorck', runes are rolled, and with each rune a small story is told. Depicting all things that can happen in life, but then the 'death' rune is pulled, and its all over. Death, being as much part of life, as life. Your life can be short or long, filled with events, but in the end we all roll 'death', and thats ok. That is how it is. Without 'death' as event, there would be NO events. (this is all very religious).
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Othan (Odin) is a poëm about the actual fight. It begins with untranslatable warchant/spell: "Hariuha laþu laukar gakar alu ole lule laukar" then a man tells about how he started as 1 in 11, who led them in battle, he prays they go to the fight, and come back home, as a whole. But when he comes back, he is only 1 in 5. Arrows struck the rest down. And there was nothing he could do, even when he could see it happen.
th-cam.com/video/h1BsKIP4uYM/w-d-xo.html - Hamrer Hippyer is about bringing in some prisoners: and taking revenge on them for the losses of the kinsmen. They chant: 'hang the animals' and 'blood for blood' 'a bone for a bone' 'so that wounds can heal again' Then it says: 'may this story be of any help'

KrigsGaldr (warchant) is one of their masterpieces: th-cam.com/video/QRg_8NNPTD8/w-d-xo.html Time dilutes listening to this song. Its a shamanistic experience. It is based on a poëm found on the Eggja stone, one of the oldest runes found. I am far from fluent in protogermanic, but it is a bit like Dutch/German/English (languages that came from protogermanic), so I did my best to translate:
Min warb naseu (we where near the waterline)
Wilr made thaim (doing the laundry)
I bormotha hauni (I was disturbed a howling)
Hu war (hu war) (who was it)
Hu war opkam har a hit lot (who was it that has come upon to our lands)
Got nafiskr orf (got masks on)
      Auim suimade (making havoc)
Foki afa galande (people all panic)
What am I supposed to do If I want to talk about peace and understanding But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall But you only understand the language of the sword
What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace But you only understand the language of the sword
I let the blade do the talking So my tongue shall become iron And my words the mighty roar of war
Revealing my divine anger's arrow shall strike All action for the good of all I see my reflection in your eyes
But my new age has just begun The sword is soft In the fire of the furnace It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters In the coldest state of their existence
They may dance the maddest In the morass of the red rain
Beloved brother enemy I sing my sword song for you
The lullaby of obliteration So I can wake up with a smile
And bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart
Coexistence, Conflict, combat Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you I see a grey gloom on the horizon
That promises a powerful sun to rise To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification (of purification)
      Look like dying embers (x10)
Min warb naseu (we where near the waterline)
Wilr made thaim (doing the laundry)
I bormotha hauni (I was disturbed by a howling)
Hu war (hu war) (who was it)
Hu war opkam har a hit lot (who was it that has come upon to our lands)
Got nafiskr orf (got masks on)
      Auim suimade (making havoc)
Foki afa galande (people all panic)
(all who have ears! Listen to this!) (x10)

These things are called "Zierscheibe" in German, no idea if they have an English name (ornament disc or something?) You can find something about them at Wikipedia and the photo search from Google where some more of these findings are shown. Kai wears another version on his shoulder here and Maria at the end of her belt. I am still searching for the original meaning of the exact symbols.

What about the reaction to Russian Heavy metal?
Aria (1985 - present) is a Soviet and Russian heavy metal rock band. One of the most successful Russian rock bands. They are called the Russian Iron Maiden.
The band turns 35 this year. During this time, the group changed three soloists.
in the first video, the group celebrates 30 years. On stage were members of the group of different years (and two soloists - the first and third)
Aria (old and new lineups together) - Torero th-cam.com/video/bdVIiohzHPk/w-d-xo.html
In the second video - a clip with the participation of the second soloist
    Aria - Colosseum th-cam.com/video/u96XBnwzdmQ/w-d-xo.html
In the third and fourth videos, the Aria group with a symphony orchestra conducted by the Swedish conductor Ulf Wadenbrandt (there was a big Aria tour with a symphony orchestra) ... It was incredible! I was lucky enough to attend this concert! The fusion of rock and classics is amazing !!!

@@JimGames Most people associate throat singing/overtone singing with the Mongols and Huns. Overtone/throat vocals carry farther in places like The Steppes than using your normal voice. There is evidence that the early Norse employed the technique, first. e.g. Indo-Europeans and the Yamna and Repin Cultures (R Y-DNA) dominated the Steppes approx 3500 BCE and earlier.. Huns and Mongols came along much later. Huns around 350 A.D> and Mongols around 1200's AD.
